Yeah, that quote is the most fucked-up part. Why were they using the system 24/7 instead of just on laptops that had been stolen? And how could the people doing this think that it was OK?

"I don't want my white boy in a class with those black folk in it but it's illegal to segregate schools, what to do? I know, let's give white people the ability to transfer to a white school instead, and split up the classrooms! That'll teach those intellectuals in Big Government from getting their Red Pinko Commie noses into my school district!"

    Reuters article
The Justice Department accused the Walthall County School District in rural Mississippi of annually permitting more than 300 students, most of them white, to transfer to a school outside of their residential area, shifting its racial makeup.

Further, administrators at three other schools grouped most of the white students into their own classrooms "resulting in significant numbers of segregated all-black classrooms at each grade level," the U.S. government said in a court filing.

What with the Catholic scandal getting into gear, I think people can still work up a rage about sexual abuse of boys when they need to.

I'mma go ahead and say that they can work up 10% of a rage about pictures being taken of half-naked boys versus half-naked girls. The general gist in our society is that adolescent boys are willing to have sex with any animate (or sexually suggestive inanimate) object at the drop of a pin, so any sort of sexual exploitation (like female teacher / male student sex) is totally okay.

Things become not okay when the sexual exploitation enters other taboo domains like physical pain, homosexuality, or pedophilia. So male teacher / male student is #2 homosexuality and potentially #1 physically painful, and priest / little boy is #1 #2 and #3.

The standards for girls, on the other hand, are totally different. They're innocent budding flowers who need to be idolized yet not fantasized about. If you look at a high-school aged girl the wrong way you're likely to become a sexual offender real soon. God forbid a male teacher has sex with a female student; he's pretty much ruined her prospects of ever finding a decent man to marry now.

Oh wait, that double-standard IS pretty outdated and misogynistic...

If they found a hard drive full of naked teens, then yeah, otherwise doubtful. If the school can construe it as a purely "for the children" kind of thing, which they undoubtedly will, a jury will no doubt side with them.

On a semi-related note, the principal at the school where my (ex?)girlfriend teaches was caught with gay porn on his work laptop. Evidently the Vice-principal who doesn't like him broke into his office and found his stash of porn.

You've gotta ask why a principal of a school outside of DC would need to have that at work. You've also gotta ask why the VP is breaking into the principal's office but that's another story...

So far nothing has been done about this. Teachers suspect he won't be at that school next year.

Also, the school has a supply budget of ~$10,000 for a year. The principal decided to spend most of that money on a end of the year gala for the students. Meanwhile teachers have to buy their own copy paper, supplies, and printer ink/toner....

Seriously this whole situation seems surreal to me and the question now isn't whether or not they were doing something wrong but ultimately how do you punish an entire school district of teachers/faculty. I mean do you just start from the ground up and say you're all fired and some of you are looking at some serious jail time, or do you simply replace the heads of staff (principal, vice principal, superintendent). Honestly though I can't believe not one teacher spoke out through this whole ordeal though.

Specter went so far as to hold a hearing near the school, where one parent insisted that warnings would be enough:
"Bob Wegbreit said a warning might suffice to let families know the district might activate webcams without a student's knowledge. Students could then choose to keep the computers in other parts of the house, instead of their bedrooms, said Wegbreit, whose group fears the lawsuit will damage the upscale district's finances and reputation."
    What is wrong with them?

Or maybe they could just put masking tape over the webcam? Or is that something they'd probably get detention for?

edit: and since this guy thinks the webcam is so easy to neutralize, how does he think the software will be useful in any way for recovering stolen laptops? Which was ostensibly the entire point of all this bullshit.

They most likely would get detention, I know the school had a pretty draconian computer policy set up. As to a warning though, if the school had made it clear that they could and would take pictures and otherwise monitor computer use by the kids, I wouldn't necessarily have a problem, as long as it was clear what the policy on the pictures was and their use/retention. Even then it's still an incredibly fine line to walk, one I would think any liability minded district would run like hell from.

I think the parents are simply trying to circle the wagons here and protect their own, however misguided their attempts may be. When this first broke, there was even a contingent of district parents who were circling petitions in support of the district's penchant for photos if I remember correctly.

Why couldn't they just use a GPS/cell tracking to locate these laptops? That seems far more useful than a webcam. I mean if you can figure out the location of the unit rather than trying to find the person who's using it -- wouldn't that be more useful than some random webcam shot that might be someone who picked this laptop up at a pawn shop?

There's been absolutely no indication in any of this that the teachers knew what was happening.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Federal prosecutors will not file charges against a school district or its employees over the use of software to remotely monitor students.

U.S. Attorney Zane David Memeger says investigators have found no evidence of criminal intent by Lower Merion School District employees who activated tracking software that took thousands of webcam and screenshot images on school-provided laptops.

A student and his family sued the district in February, claiming officials invaded his privacy by activating the software. That case continues.

The district has acknowledged capturing 56,000 screen shots and webcam images so it could locate missing laptops.

Memeger says he decided to make Tuesday's announcement to close the matter before the start of the school year.
