I'mma go ahead and say that they can work up 10% of a rage about pictures being taken of half-naked boys versus half-naked girls. The general gist in our society is that adolescent boys are willing to have sex with any animate (or sexually suggestive inanimate) object at the drop of a pin, so any sort of sexual exploitation (like female teacher / male student sex) is totally okay.
Things become not okay when the sexual exploitation enters other taboo domains like physical pain, homosexuality, or pedophilia. So male teacher / male student is #2 homosexuality and potentially #1 physically painful, and priest / little boy is #1 #2 and #3.
The standards for girls, on the other hand, are totally different. They're innocent budding flowers who need to be idolized yet not fantasized about. If you look at a high-school aged girl the wrong way you're likely to become a sexual offender real soon. God forbid a male teacher has sex with a female student; he's pretty much ruined her prospects of ever finding a decent man to marry now.

If they found a hard drive full of naked teens, then yeah, otherwise doubtful. If the school can construe it as a purely "for the children" kind of thing, which they undoubtedly will, a jury will no doubt side with them.
On a semi-related note, the principal at the school where my (ex?)girlfriend teaches was caught with gay porn on his work laptop. Evidently the Vice-principal who doesn't like him broke into his office and found his stash of porn.

I mean do you just start from the ground up and say you're all fired and some of you are looking at some serious jail time, or do you simply replace the heads of staff (principal, vice principal, superintendent). Honestly though I can't believe not one teacher spoke out through this whole ordeal though.
But they're children! Their rights need to be eliminated for their own safety!

They most likely would get detention, I know the school had a pretty draconian computer policy set up. As to a warning though, if the school had made it clear that they could and would take pictures and otherwise monitor computer use by the kids, I wouldn't necessarily have a problem, as long as it was clear what the policy on the pictures was and their use/retention. Even then it's still an incredibly fine line to walk, one I would think any liability minded district would run like hell from.
I think the parents are simply trying to circle the wagons here and protect their own, however misguided their attempts may be. When this first broke, there was even a contingent of district parents who were circling petitions in support of the district's penchant for photos if I remember correctly.

Why couldn't they just use a GPS/cell tracking to locate these laptops? That seems far more useful than a webcam. I mean if you can figure out the location of the unit rather than trying to find the person who's using it -- wouldn't that be more useful than some random webcam shot that might be someone who picked this laptop up at a pawn shop?
