[Phalla] Last.fm 2: Game Over, Rider Victory

lastfm-1.jpg

Someone, a cigarette in their hand, hit the play button on the old rusted boombox. Sounds of valor and rebellion blared out:

if you think I'd back down / or accept defeat / brace for the aftershock
driven to the limit / take it to the streets / give it everything you've got

"Heh," the man smiled. "Ride up, folks. We've got a long ways to go." He threw in the kickstand on his motorcycle as the cavalcade lit up the darkened space with lights and sirens.

An hour later, the man, riding at the front, held up a hand and slid to a stop. This large central plaza - tile and silver, opulence and ruin - was what they'd been looking for. He dismounted, walked over to a body on the floor, and turned it over. The robed figure, sanded faceless by squirming insects, told him all he needed to know. "Unpack, folks. We're here." He straightened up, stretching.

Behind him, two more gleaming figures of metal and leather stepped off their own bikes. Beyond them, a crowd of people clustered around an odd, low, flatbed truck. A central framework was wrapped in ropes and cloths, quickly torn away to reveal seven metal...sarcophagi?

The three men walked in silence to the center of the room, bones and relics snapping under their booted feet. One of them kneeled over a melted pile of metal, an eerie red light shining through his biker's helmet. "This is it." He stood up, then kicked the pile. It shuddered, coughed dust, then flowed - the central pylon of the plaza, a glistening spiral of silver and gold, ready to play music once more.

Which it did. It echoed the boombox: "here comes...the revolution..." and then shuddered again. Cracks spidered over the pylon, glowing an emerald green. The music stopped and then started again, screaming:

"I am the GOD OF HELLFIRE
Inside every man there lives a liar
Before their gods they cower
I will divide, I will devour"

Encircling the room, strange black masses dropped down to close the exits. Putrescent and reeking, they removed all avenues of escape. By the truck, the sarcophagi began to split open, revealing seven women in elegant garb.

As if in response, the cracks broke open further on the pylon, replacing its glory with a muddled mess of black iron. One of the cracks ran to the wall, flaring with energy, then died.

The men backed a step away, then chuckled. "You have no idea what you're up against, do you? We've got you this time!"

Someone handed the women crowns, and as they placed them on their heads, they began to sing.

--

Oh god. The music. It's back. But there's so much of it. Too much. Make it stop - make it one song again!

Welcome to last.fm 2: Mastertapes, a sequel to The Songs In My Head (also called last.fm).

A quick synopsis of the last game for those who did not play:
The mafia, a group of noises opposed to melody if not music itself, won by slaughtering the Muses, spirits responsible for a domain of music. Note that this Phalla series occurs in my head - a little meta, I'll admit, but nothing too unusual if you accept the game as a representation of my current state of mind.

This is a Phalla for 55 players. Factions and conversions are at play. You have been warned.

Sign up to play in Lime. But wait!

I will be offering a limited number of spaces in what I'm calling the Director's Cut version (or the Director's Club.) Director's Cut players do not play or affect the game in any way; instead, they gain access to my personal notes proboard and get to see the behind-the-scenes commentary, so to speak. I recommend this option for new players or people interested in running their own Phalla someday. Currently, there are three (3) spots in the Director's Club available. With a significant enough basis of reserves, I may open up more spots just so no one is bored. Feel free to sign up; if more people sign up for the Director's Club than there are spaces available, I will choose on merit, not by the first to sign up in teal. You can sign up for BOTH the Director's Club and as a regular player. I will choose the Director's Club first, then sort out the regular players who didn't get in.

    The usual phalla stuff:
If you are dead, you may not speak to any other player, LIVING OR DEAD, about the game. One dead post is acceptable, but it should be nothing more than “Oh crap I died.” or some variant thereof.
No anonymous contact. All PMs or messages outside of the forums must be done with full disclosure of your forum identity.
You may not use screenshots to “prove” anything to anyone.
You are free to create Proboards, make sure you give me access so I can examine them.
No direct sharing of role PMs.

Director's Cut players must not talk to anyone not in the Director's Club about the phalla while it is going on.

Vote to lynch someone in red.
    Clarifications in orange.

Vote close is at 11 pm EST.

    Game mechanics:

Order of Actions: Primary actions occur first, then secondary actions, and finally tertiary actions. Special actions may occur at any time. Any given player may only make one primary, secondary, and/or tertiary action each night.

The Whim: Each day with narration, I will post a YouTube video of a specific song. Whoever identifies the element I like the most about that song will gain some benefit. Elements can be musical or lyrical. I suggest using the minute and second as a reference. Some songs may have more than one answer; once all answers have been resolved, I will post that the song is done for the day. The winner(s) will not be revealed until narration.

The Whirl: Each day, the pylon at the center of the room will progress down the following list of songs, generating an effect from that day's song. Effects are generally quite powerful; they can hurt or help the village and its composite factions. Unlike last.fm 1, the song of the day is not randomized, but occurs sequentially.

    Songs:
Conjure One - Face The Music
    Porcupine Tree - Dislocated Day
Arch Enemy - Night Falls Fast
High On Fire - Fury Whip
Lamb of God - Blacken The Cursed Sun
    Theatre Of Tragedy - Flickerlight
Iced Earth - Infiltrate And Assimilate
Light This City - The Anhedonia Epidemic
Agalloch - This Mountain On Which You Will Die
    Ihsahn - Emancipation
Dead Can Dance - Summoning Of The Muse

Victory Conditions: If any group achieves its primary and secondary objectives, it has completely won. If any group achieves their primary objective but fails to achieve their secondary objective, they have a partial victory; partial victories count as losses if any group achieves a complete win. A complete win can also be achieved by a group with ONLY a primary objective; in this case they are removed from the game once they win and do not discount others' partial victories.

The mafia has a traditional "win by majority" victory condition. Quite obviously, seeking them out prolongs your own life (or diminishes it, depending upon how you're looking at it.)

The Queens: Each major faction possesses a figurehead known as a Queen. These Queens perform a similar role to the Muses of last.fm 1; that is, they are powerful cornerstones. Unlike last.fm 1's Muses, however, they do possess active abilities. They are still delicious, ability-adding and strengthening candy for the mafia. All Queens possess power pools (see below.)

Power Pools: Significantly powerful roles have power pools. These characters start with a designated amount of power points (or PP), and gain a number of PP every night as a tertiary action. PP may be spent on various actions or abilties enumerated in their roles. Note that there is no cap on PP; neither does it expire.

Static Qualities: Some roles may possess any or all of the following abilities. The definitions will also be provided in their role PMs.

Immanence: The first ability used against you in the game is automatically roleblocked. The person roleblocked is made aware of their failure to affect you.

Impervious: You are immune to all conversions. Your would-be converter is made aware of their failure to affect you.

Persistence: You are guarded against the first ability that would kill you during the game. This cannot prevent you from dying to the vote. If you possess both Immanence and Persistence, Immanence triggers first. In such an occurance, your "charge" of Persistence is not wasted.

Sourcing: All songs (from which roles and game concepts are developed) are taken from my listening history, available at http://www.last.fm/user/Arivia. No roles are generated at the artist or album level, and no roles have been generated from long narrative works (Jeff Wayne, Stuart McLean.)

A generic villager PM would look thus:
You are a song! You have lots of other song friends under the reign of Queen Floofle. Your friends are:

    Abilities:

Immanence: The first ability used against you in the game is automatically roleblocked. The person roleblocked is made aware of their failure to affect you.

    Objectives:

Primary Objective: Eliminate Queens A, B, and C and their friends.
    Secondary Objective: Eliminate the Mafia.
