[Let's Play] Red Faction-Van Tram!

Red Faction, where Communists run wild

red_faction_front-geileresel.jpg

Merciless wikipedia quotation:
Red Faction is a first-person shooter video game that was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2, Microsoft Windows, and Macintosh by THQ and Volition. A version for the Nokia N-Gage was developed by Monkeystone Games. The game was also re-developed as a top-down shooter for the mobile phone.[1]

Red Faction takes place on Mars in the late 21st century. The player controls a miner named Parker who helps lead a rebellion against the Ultor Corporation. The premiere feature of the game is its "Geo-Mod" technology, short for "geometry modification", which provided destructible environments, allowing the player to destroy certain sections of the scenery in the game. For example, instead of opening a door, a player could blast through the rock surrounding the door.[2]

Let's get this Red Faction LP restarted. I got the go ahead from the original author to take over, so watch as I break this somewhat unbreakable (except all those delicious destructable everythings) game.

I realize there's voice audio problems, stupid ass headset, I hope my knowledge of the game and the zooming about I do makes up for it.

Set 1 I'm a miner, stop!

Set 2 Woo Eco-terrorism!
Set 3 Fucking goddamn stealth sections.

Set 4 Happy Funtime Mars Mission

Set 5 I'd watch it.
Set 6 Ignore the native flora and fauna.

Set 7 From Space!

Set 8 That Damn Capek!

Set 9 Merc Madness!
Set 10 Van Tram!

Set 11 The Shortening
Set 12 The Space Musical
Set 13 The Finale

I know you're aware of the issues with this set, but I could barely hear anything.

That's odd, I was getting either loud or hearable on my end, I'll have to turn up the mic volume then.

Okay well, I could hear when you weren't shooting, which in a game like this is not often.

I can turn the ingame volume down then, would be easier than tinkering with my mic setup. Is it at least entertaining to watch?

Part 2 is up, processing but up. Bit short cause I stopped it at the stealth section, which will be 20 or so minutes of me whining.

    Parker destroy some important stuff.

It's not just that, the following I've noticed are all that affects guards spotting you: jumping around, and getting close to them, doesn't matter if you're behind them. And those little floor robots will spot a corpse if they go into the same room where you put it and alarms automatically go off if you get too close to anyone. It really is the worst stealth section in any game ever, thank god you can skip the second one and go in guns ablazing.

I think I cheated my way through the stealth section on the PS2 by simply looking at the floor the entire time.

As in, the AI was so bad that the NPCs won't register as being "suspicious" if they aren't in your view.

    Awesome game, though.
You can put semtex on people... and blowemup

    This made me laugh.

Tune in next time for something worse than stealth sections, escort missions! Though the one in Red Faction is probably the best. It's not so much an escort mission as it is "I'll open this locked door and stay back like a good boy, and the guards won't focus me at all so don't worry about that."

    Escort this, assholes!

It's under 5 minutes just to show how painless the escort mission (well most of it), it may as well be over cause he runs off after you do the ship part, which is next.

    Especially that asshole over there!

I just remembered how fucking brutal the last level of Red Faction is. Millions of dudes with railguns that can shoot you through walls, and a last boss that is cheap as fuck.

So, uhhh, look forward to that.

Last boss isn't a problem if you know what to do and keep your fighter alive through the guantlet, which too is easy as long as you just zoom by everyone. But yeah the rest of that is bullshit, especially since you lose your weapons AGAIN near the end.

The part that bugged me was that
Ok, I finally blew up her goddamn hovering attack ship thing, and I thought "Sweet, that's that".

But no, she survives and is now perforating my ass with a railgun. Whaaaaaat?

At least it wasn't as cheesy as the last boss in RF2... if I remember right he had two railguns.

I remember RF having the best bug for the stealth sections.

The guards can't see you as long as you don't see them.

As in, you can walk through the levels completely unmolested as long as you don't look at anything but the ground.

Yeah usually max mic volume makes no difference, you need to make the game volume much lower than usual, without making it too quiet. It's a pain I know -_-.
Still, don't beat yourself up over it, it's still an entertaining LP.

Ah thanks for that. This next set you get to watch me bitch at a stupid combot in monotone I guess?

    Part 1

    And Part 2

I may go back to short segments as doing those are easier since I have to record the audio afterwards.

I only saw the first video but I have to say... It was completely uninteresting. I felt like you were just speedrunning the game, when you should be actually providing an informative play. If you just like to have fun playing a certain game, that's ok. Don't just record it and call it an LP. :?

The sound quality was also horrible, you should have tweaked it before uploading it.

Because Audacity has decided it doesn't want to record any more, along with vehicle noise being glitched to maximum this is now a hybrid. Will be easier on me and hopefully make it better. Cut scenes in video (in fact I'll still be recording the whole thing just not posting anything but the cut scenes) and everything else screen shot.

    Set 8

    That Damn Capek!
    013XM.png
Starting from the ladder from last time, let's head up!

    qb5dC.png
Uhoh, a scientist, We'd best sneaky shot him!

    8C0xz.png
Mr Guard too, he's a wily one that guardsman.

    xQR2R.png
More guards, you'd think we're breaking into a top secret lab or something, what with the getting shot by turrets and guards.

    1ms64.png
I said hold the elevator asshole! This means you have to die!

    gyikR.png
Capeks own personal zoo, full of miners, scientist, and whatever the hell these things are!

    SF2S6.png
Another shortcut is this wall, easy too just blow a few holes in and hop up, skips a room with about 4, 5 guards.

    vRbZY.png
    Michael Bay would be proud!

    aWH0U.png
Closer to Capeks secret lab, and his guards are just dying to meet us!

    R3bPn.png
hehe, he pooped a health kit.

    dwJLP.png
Capek's being camera shy and shooting his purple psycho energy at us. :(
This would be one of the hardest bosses in gaming, and definitely the hardest in this game, if his AI wasn't so bad. His attack is a homing sphere you have to dance around and not trip over anything or you get killed in two hits, same goes for Eos who just stands there. If his AI wasn't so awful he'd focus Eos as soon as she shows up and it'd be damn near impossible to beat without being prepared beforehand.

    pB6ZP.png
Speaking of Eos I actually got a nice action shot of her.

    Capeks Death

    6214K.png
Remember, after fighting old men it's always a good idea to wear protection!

    8AWH6.png

    Set 9 Merc Madness!
    frYzT.png
Let's get this shooting gallery on the road!

    1n3Ay.png
It's a bit too easy really, just shoot the occasional guard, and blow up a few fighters. The scariest thing is Orions shitty driving.

    iQLZV.png
Really, you have to tried to lose this part, you can not shoot anything, or waste all your bullets and it get through it.

    mDJEw.png
Speaking of Orion, stop breaking the laws of physics, you asshole!

    VurCF.png
Hey look it's one of those critters no one cares about!

    RjETw.png
And native plants of mars, again stuff that would be a BIG DEAL if we were to actually find it.

    uz1hF.png
Hendrix warns us about the mercs, and we loot this guys corpse.

    HoPsW.png
One of the rare places where you have to use Geomod to continue.

    qC121.png
    Hey look some friendly scientist.

    pPyI7.png

    FcZu0.png
You can barely see them but you can snipe these 2 guys before sending off the trolley.

    x0Lzi.png
    Generic Transition room #356 everyone!

    Yy3m8.png
Spiffy, you think they got rooms around here?

    lKvjK.png
I'm not sure but I think your bounty raises as the game progresses. Neat lil easter egg.

    pcEB2.png
Ah yeah, best gun in the game :D

    CGcKq.png
A merc in action, they have precision rifles too :(

    5CrYd.png
Elevator time, again, for the millionth time.

    zNyza.png
A fighter off in the distance, think it's the merc leaders?

    YmMsN.png
Fight some more mooks when we get to the top of the elevator, I do get a 2 for 1 though. :D

    LBruQ.png
There's another cutscene but it's just Parker staring at a monitor and getting ambushed by some mercs like a dumbass.

    x0Lzi.png
And we end on another transition room for this set, sorry guys!

We're about 75% through the game now too.
