there are things called insignias that are attained by reaching a certain goal (typically one that can't be met in one round, unlike pins which are usually awarded every round... on one particularly awesome round i got 36 pins, but no insignias)

I'm telling them now that if they can't do anything to get the damn game to work again, to just refund my money. I'm not at all sure what I'm supposed to do if they just keep ignoring me, though.

that is the one thing that brought me from terrible to average
It's been inproving, and I've been playing medic just about every time. It's just that before it started to get better it was horrid, abysmal shit. And even now I can unload a bunch of bullets in to some guy and get taken out by a couple shots from them as they turn around to deal with the pest.

also i'm sure you know point of impact on iron sights, as a navy dude... but yeah. learning the iron sights, especially on LMGs (like the first one you have) can be tricky. some of them are really tall, and tricky to level

Assaults provide ammo replenishment and, with the right gadget, create smokescreens in addition to their normal firepower. With alternate All Kit weapons such as shotguns equipped, they can use C4 for various purposes like vehicle destruction.
Medics, of course, heal and revive.
Engineers are the only ones who can repair vehicles and often play a critical role in destroying enemy vehicles.
Recons can use their sniper rifles to spot enemies from longer ranges, call in mortar strikes to destroy enemy vehicles, Rush objectives, and oust enemies from buildings they may have a strong presence in. They also have motion mines that can detect enemies and alert your teammates to their presence.
Also, when trying other classes, don't be frustrated if you have trouble. It can take a while to get used to the differences and to figure out how you best use each classes's abilities.
