Last year, Nine Inch Nails played their final show as a touring entity, and mastermind Trent Reznor married former West Indian Girl frontwoman Mariqueen Maandig. Now, Reznor and Maandig have formed the group How to Destroy Angels. They'll release a self-titled, six-song EP this summer.

The new group has a website, as well as a Twitter, a MySpace, and pages on Facebook, YouTube, and Vimeo. But all the information we've seen on them is in the 40-second video below. The clip features a hand, presumably Maandig's, tweaking a knob while some fuzzed-out and evil-sounding electro blares. Other than that, all we know is that they appear to be named after a 1984 album by industrial pioneers Coil. For the moment, that's all we need to know.

That's right, ladies and gentlemen, Reznor makes his return to music with HOW TO DESTROY ANGELS.

I, for one, am pretty stoked. I've always been a huge fan of Reznor's work with Nine Inch Nails.

Talk about how awesome this is going to be. Or about how much Nine Inch Nails kicked ass.

EDIT: Download their new six track EP from http://howtodestroyangels.com/

When I think of Trent Reznor, I think about how he should just stick to producing or doing movie music.

But then I think how I would just rather have Nick Cave be my rock musician that does movie scores

I hope he puts more effort into this than he did The Slip.

His recent stuff just sounds so... lazy compared to his older work.

so why do some of you dislike reznor so much (or at least, to the point where you want him to go away?) Is he extremely saturated by the media/other people where you are from, or are you just really bothered by the music?

Nah, I couldn't care less about media saturation. Plenty of great artists get a lot more attention.

Just genuinely can't stand any of his music that I've heard.

Seriously. Every time I see a video of him in his later days I feel like I need to go build a home in the woods by gnawing logs into planks and punching the nails in with my fists. Just to catch up with how grizzled he is.

When Reznor performs the song, it sounds like the poems the goth kid in high school wrote after the girl next door went to the prom with the captain of the basketball team even though he saw her first. It's meant to conjure sympathy between the singer and listeners whose outcast status is largely self-constructed and likely to vanish entirely as soon as they get to college and reinvent themselves as someone who matters. Major thematic ingredients: mascara, black cargo pants, and the day-to-day agony that is suburban upper-middle-class teenagehood.

When Cash sings it, it's a genuine callback to a life that has seen some tremendous lows and whose high points are all in the past. Deep regret rather than impotent rage, and a gulf of unimaginable experience between the performer and the listener. Thematic ingredients: whiskey, grit, and the blackened remnants of youthful idealism.

I heard the Cash version before I heard the original, so I thought the line "The needle tears a hole" was referring to a record-player.

first off, are other NIN songs not goth kid poems? yeah, they're good musically, but the lyrics are never anything that endearing

second, do you guys really think Reznor has not gone through highs and lows similar to Cash? They're both pretty big superstars who have gone through that whole rollercoaster.

I agree that Cash's version is a hell of a lot better, but you have to realize that when a musician as legendary as Johnny Cash covers your fucking song, there is a reason.

When Cash sings it, it's not a genuine anything. He didn't write the lyrics, the melodic construction is awkward for him, and it sounds like stilted karaoke. His cover of Rusty Cage was substantially better, but nothing on that album is at the top of his oeuvre.

The original isn't really one of Reznor's best either, but the analogy you made is along the lines of saying System Shock reminds you of BioShock.
