It seems like they just tacked that in, so that it was left open for season 6 instead of closing the show right then and there.
Everthing else up to that point suggested Sam was never, EVER, coming back. What the fuck was even the point of the cage if he busted out if it immediately? :?
Michael falling in the cage with Sam probably broke it. However, it's unlikely that the freed Sam possess all of the power the Devil had before he fell in.
Possible possibilities:
1. The Devil is still possessing Sam but most of his power is sealed away.
2. The Devil has taken Sam's body and left him in hell but also left most of his power.

I'm going to go ahead and assume pretty confidently the Lucifer saga is over, and that the chance of that just being Sam is high. Or something else, something new.
gonna say alistair is gonna be the "big bad" of the next season. he can't just be gone after pulling that stuff with bobby's soul.
and yeah, lucifer saga is probably over, now the fight to see who rules hell and all. return of meg plz. they always get the hottest ladies (and sam one time) whenever she shows up
ooooh yeah, you're right. sorry, got ma demon names mixed up. but yeah, want him back sooo bad. basically, i want him and castiel to take the place of the brothers winchesters and have the season following them two as the main characters

Michael falling in the cage with Sam has to have some repercussions. I guess they can use that to explain him being free. Still, I don't think the freed Sam is going to be completely 100% the old Sam.
We havent had 100% of the old Sam since the end of Season 2.
Well, it depends on what you define as the "old" Sam. But the thought I was having was that the freed Sam will have some new powers or issues or something.
I want to go back and rewatch a bunch of stuff for chuck content ASAP.
The guy who writes things that all turn out true, who knows about all Sam and Dean's life before it happens, turns out to be God. We probably should have seen this coming.
The line "The angels are keeping it top secret, very hush hush. But I saw it anyway" makes so much sense now.
where are you getting that? all i saw was
him getting zapped away

This Dean guy is so cheesy.

Wow, what a cheesy bastard having a VOICE that I'm familiar with. He sucks and can never be a worthwhile character because of how he naturally speaks.
Spoilers/speculation for the future:
Would it be too complex if Sam turned out to be a vengeful demon-possessed skinwalker? (Meg still alive?) I dunno. I think it would be perfect if the last season was a big "fuck you" that merely twisted the knife.

I'm not sure what you're asking, here.
How I figure he was god? I didn't at first. Others started mentioning it and I realized it made perfect sense.
His little narrative at the end is kind of a giveaway as well.

nope, i just watched the last two minutes again and his narrative doesn't even have a hint towards the fact that he's god

The way I was looking at it was that he said he got all his info from the angels. So he knew how things were gonna go down before it happened, but he started it out talking about how important the car was.
If the angels were all expecting a prize fight, why did they talk about the car being important to Sam and Dean? So he knew more than what was being passed to him from the angels.

If him going "But then, nothing ever really ends", smiling, and then vanishing does not strike you as suspiciously god-like, then I don't know what to tell you.

The other option is that he's more of a prophet in the style of Jesus or Mohammed than a plane-jane 'seer of the future' sort of prophet.

Send them a Pair of Running Shoes. Used or Otherwise. Or a letter, but let's not be formulaic. Send them a picture of trainers, too. Or a painting. Or money. Whatever.
ARE the ratings fucking crazy though? Seems like they're just going to piss off everyone who's been watching the show for a few years
Well, it's the CW, so you don't exactly have to pull in LOST numbers to stay on the air. Plus, I'm reasonably confidant that the number of people who will be happy it's still on the air will outnumber the rarghwtffanboyragers.

I think everyone can agree
Yes.
Castiel is going to be spending most of this season putting heaven's house back in order and dealing with the aftermath of last season.
