There is also the issue that down syndrome and lead to all sorts of other problems as well.
I used to babysit (I use the term loosely, he mostly just watched Star trek and Night Rider while I did homework) a guy who was ~40 and had down syndrome. He had to be in a wheelchair but he could do basically everything himself. He was always excited to talk to somebody and you wouldn't have guessed he had a problem in the world.
Then out of the blue he died of kidney failure. The time between diagnosis and his death was about 3 days. It came as a huge shock to everyone, especially his mother who took care of him her whole life.

The thing that sort of clinches it for me is the fact that there is a high level of severe medical issues (such as heart problems, among other organs) associated with pretty much all of these syndromes.
Even if the child is born mentally average (or above) it sounds like a large portion of their life will be spent in hospitals undergoing various invasive and possibly painful treatments.
If I was less of a cold hearted bastard in real life, I dunno, that might break me. I can't imagine what it would do to, like, normal people.

Honestly, I think after a certain point in terms of physical deformity one could argue it's the parent being selfish in LETTING the child come to term, rather than aborting it.
I think bwanie's main problem is that... well... I can't really see abortions as a way to keep a relationship together, so it's kind of a choice between stay together and raise the kid struggling like mad, or option 2 and lose the woman.

I disagree. If it turns out the child is in for some seriously bad issues for it's entire (possibly very short) life, I would not be surprised if his wife would rather 'option 2' as opposed to struggling in an almost futile way.

I mean, an abortion can and usually will put a strain on a relationship, but you know what does it worse? A child who dies in stillbirth. Yeah.

nah we got this.
we consider ourselves very lucky that we get a very clear diagnosis at a very early stage of the pregnancy. She is just hella sad about the experience being ruined and the shitty talks you have to have with everybody that knew.

what guy
and the funny thing is, there's good chance that the baby will suffer worse than down's and the whole issue would be moot.

I'm confused, you mean an abortion would make it suffer worse?
