oh, another thing about DC - summers. Hot and humid as the Devil's toilet. That's what you get for building a swamp-city.

While I like the Metro much more than you, I will agree on the summers. I spent a summer in Atlanta once, and everyone asked if I was used to the heat yet. I had to point out that being built on a drained swamp made DC just as unbearable.

I spent a week or so in San Antonio last summer. I'd rather 104 degrees there than 85 degrees in DC.

Yeah, the urban sprawl here isn't close to as bad as TX. But, he does live in CO. Springs which is much worse than Denver.

After having to commute a total of 2 hours a day, 4 days a week for 4 months. I've come to the conclusion that Colorado Drivers are godawful, I'm starting to think they're worse than Texas... there I said it.

True but co springs still isn't that bad compared to some other large cities. Also, I disagree with your statement, sir. Dallas drivers are fucking grade-A assholes.

In conclusion, I do think its safe to say some parts of the US suck more than other parts.

    Calgary, AB.

Well, for starters, Alberta as a whole is a frozen wasteland and run by two primary interests: the right wing religious lobby & the oil & gas industry. Calgary itself demands that all citizens be 'oil patriots' of sorts; anyone critical of the oilfield in any way is harassed, declared a 'job hater', equivocated with lazy drug dealers, etc. Native Canadian racism is through the ceiling, which in turn forces the native population into the underground scene - so the stigmatization fuels the manifestation of the stereotype.

Canada as a country is busy killing & torturing impoverished Afghans overseas, is run by an incompetent Calgarian who's part of the religious lunatic scene the short span of the year that he actually lives here, and has largely labelled respectable but inconvenient scholars like David Suzuki as 'fringe' because we told like to talk about uncomfortable facts.

I don't agree that we're shitty basketball fans. I don't have much experience with other NBA cities, but portland is generally recognized as having good fans (I mean, remember the greg oden rally?)

Can't disagree about the police, but the whole incestuous-local-politics thing happens everywhere

I don't know that it happens everywhere, but it's pretty pronounced here in PDX.

But I'll grant you that I'm being more than a little disgruntled re: the basketball fandom. We're not SHITTY fans. We're just greatly diminished from the earlier days, the 88-92 days. I posted something along these lines in one of the NBA threads, but lately, it seems Blazer fans don't really get WHY they're fans, or take the time to learn anything about the game they're supposedly enjoying. The blind homerism to educated fan ratio has gotten really skewed, and it used to be a LOT more balanced in Portland.

And to be fair, even the police complaints we have aren't much of much when compared to a lot of other major metropolitan areas. I'd imagine Baltimore would look at Portland and go "You're calling THAT Police corruption and bureaucratic insensitivity? Really?"

blind homerism is a part of every major fanbase

Local politics are always like that because everyone always does know everyone and lots of them have had contact for years and years either in government or in their respective nonprofit/business dealings. And when they hire out, the results are often worse precisely because the hire has to come into as a complete outsider: see the former LA police chief portland hired a few years ago, whose name always escapes me.

The police complaints aren't that bad, but they're exacerbated by how poor the department apparently still is at handling them. I wish fucking saltzman had a credible opponent this election.

    Santa Monica:

    Cons:
Air conditioned apartments at even vaguely reasonable prices are impossible to find.
They've been doing roadwork (albeit somewhat needed work) on half the streets between me and work, so my commute time's up 50-60%
The 405 between LAX and the 22 is a writhing shitheap of scalloped bumpy ass highway, that totally sucks if you aren't driving some cloud-ride fancy pants douchebag sedan.

    Pros:
Most important things I can walk to
    It's still Santa Monica weather

    Austin:

    Cons:
Gets hot in the summertime. Avoided by not being there in the summer.
Freeways are too narrow, or are idiotic messes with traffic lights.
Nobody in the state knows how to deal with traffic.
Gets shit on indirectly by geese with rampant texas-hatin boners.

    Pros:
    Awesome lakes
    Schlitterbahn is nearby

Minneapolis and St Paul are awesome. I know it is, what i was complaining about is that the blind homerism is overriding the fans who know how the fucking game of basketball is played. Winning and contending helped back in the late 80's/early 90's, but the fans were also a lot more knowledgeable back then, and that's more what I was getting at. Portland fans are rabid, and loud, but they don't seem to have a grasp on the game anymore. They're just chalupa hounds.

Keep in mind - these are RIDICULOUSLY minor complaints. I love the hell out of the city, and think its easily one of the best in the United States, which is why everyone keeps moving here, even though our economy is crap. I can't blame em. It's all right, if you like saxophones.

Well, okay, at least he got rid of the porn, and most of the flying monsters.

Our penultimate prime minister sucked out half a billion euros from a previously-viable shipbuilding industry and basically fled. His party is still in power, "doing everything in their power to combat corruption". This is one of the many reasons we have pensioners digging through trash containers on the street, and picking up produce that's fallen on the ground on the market and asking politely if they may keep it.

We're like Greece, except the people are either too docile or too nationalistic to actually riot and change the party in power (not that that would change much, the right are fucking crooks and the left are small time crooks and kinda incompetent).

I love Colorado to death, but:

The recent explosion of "medical" marijuana dispensaries are starting to piss me right off.

Now, I don't smoke, but I'm all for legalization and taxation/regulation. It's all these "clinics" up in arms about the new bills trying to be passed to limit the amount of "clinics" we can have. Or something like that. All I know is that it's threatening to close down the vast majority of them.

Look, I had an acquaintance in college who dropped out to start a pool cleaning business in fucking Las Vegas, where it regularly hits in the mid 200's. Needless to say he didn't last long with the thousands of other fucking pool cleaners in his block alone.

What does this have to do with "clinics?" Down Broadway there's one on every corner. Possibly three per street. It's like weed Starbucks. Of course you're being run out of business there's nothing but herbal clinics downtown.

There's also an absurd rivalry thing going on between the clinics that's annoying as well.

Also Boulder and its hippies. I never go to the Springs, but the few times I have I was able to find a beer within moments and all was well.

Snohomish county is pretty red in comparison to the blue counties that surround us. (EDIT: Well I dunno what's going on up in Skagit but whatever.) I also used to live in Arlington, WA and I remember some idiot racist teenagers sticking a burning cross in the yard of a black preacher so that was great. The tea party movement seems strong there too and I also recall some Christian protesters near the high school I was attending.

I'm a hour away from Seattle and 100 miles from Vancouver B.C. and I'm about 20 minutes to half an hour away from I-5 so getting anywhere there is fun to actually be had takes it's time. There's really nothing to do here aside from hanging out at bars or at your friend's place drinking a beer and sitting around a bonfire. Or being Scandinavian and hating on the Swedes, Norwegians, Finns and the Danish. Lot's of old people around here, lot's of Scandinavian pride.

Typically people leave. Most of my friends have already. The job market here sucks, can't really do anything unless you're a trained and certified hair dresser or something. A lot of the small shops in town can't stay open for very long either.

Overland Park is a suburb of Kansas City, MO. OP is in Johnson County, which is basically the white people's bubble for the Kansas City metro area. Being ambiguously brown (like me) sucks because all the white people think I'm a trrrrrrist or automatically assume I'm committing crime. These same white people are super rich and fully believe in the "pull yourself up by the bootstraps" ideology because they are super republican and follow the party line absolutely.

    Suburban sprawl.

You can't buy good (import/6.0) beer, liquor, or wine from the grocery store because the state of Kansas decided that liquor stores are the only places to purchase booze that isn't less than 3.2 percent alcohol.

Johnson countians are notorious for being terrible drivers (at least within the metro area).

Kansas City, MO is poor and has a disproportionately high crime rate because something like 7 of the top 25 most dangerous neighborhoods in America are in Kansas City, MO (according to Forbes).

The San Fernando Valley is a wasteland of strip malls and suburban sprawl.

    Smog.

    The freeways are congested 24/7.

Cost of living is far too high for what you get.

Los Angeles: filthy, violent, expensive, horrible traffic, government on the verge of financial collapse, and hordes of phony front-running sports fans who spend all game texting.

Having said that, LA is my favorite place to live because you can buy all your booze at the grocery store.

The concept of not being to able to buy alcohol whenever I damn please is so foreign to me. The idea of a state run liquor store mind boggling.

Hell I can walk outside of my office and legally go buy weed at a store across the street.

But yes other than that LA has issues. The weather is very nice and I like the corporate culture. The food is also great. The traffic is a fucking joke though, it often takes an hour to travel 15 miles. The cost of living is also very high and the shrinking middle class troubling.

Yeah, the booze situation in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Missouri is a fucking joke. You can buy all the Budweiser and American shit lager at grocery stores and gas stations, but as soon as you want to buy decent beer, wine, and liquor, you have to go to a state licensed liquor store that is only open Monday-Saturday until 2:00 AM. Bullshit, I say.

Despite all the horribleness of LA, I miss it a ton and wish I still lived there.

Mississauga, Canada isn't bad at all.

Hey what do you know, someone else who lives in Mississauga.

There's nothing wrong with Mississauga really. I don't really like how you have to buy different tickets for the TTC though.

The place doesn't really have any spirit either. I don't think anybody who lives in Mississauga really identifies with the city. It almost feels like the suburban extension of Toronto.

Saratoga is so awesome and internationally beloved, sometimes we get a few too many tourists.

    Baton Rouge, LA

    Cons:
    - Heat/humidity in the summer
    - Race relations here stalled somewhere around the 1960s
    - We have a gulf full of oil and they're expecting a heavy hurricane season this year

    Pros:
    - Thanksgiving weather is awesome
    - The food is great, especially in the center of the state
    - I'm no longer a resident of Kentucky (suck it Rand Paul!)
