FYI - as an oilfield worker, lots of shit with this BP blowout was fucked up.
1. The Blowout Preventer (BOP) - Was rented out by Cameron (another international oilfield services company like Halliburton) with the express warning that that particular BOP was not 100% suited to the environment conditions that BP had planned on using it for, and had a high likelihood of failure. BP used it anyway.
2. Circulation system - Wells are drilled in multiple stages, always lined with steel pipe called casing for each stage. These stages are supposed to be cemented in for isolation between pressure or hydrocarbon zones by differing diameters of casing. What I've been told occurred at the point of "blowout" (uncontrolled release of pressure), is that instead of using fluid dynamics to force the drilling fluid out of the annulus (the space between well bore and casing) and up to surface by the cement "pill", the call was made to flush the drilling fluid out with WATER. The whole idea of drilling fluid is that it's dense enough, due to additives and solubles, to contain whatever wellbore pressure is present. Water has none of this density, so almost immediately the well kicked back at them. The BOP failed to shut in the pressure (as per the equipment provider's warnings), and the secondary system at the rig floor failed as well.
Now, this is mostly hearsay, but it does follow what I've leared from my 7-8 years of experience with drilling and oilfield work. Your first line of defense from the wellbore pressure is ALWAYS your circulation of drilling fluid. Fucking with that system is just begging for problems. Intentionally installing a emergency shut down system (the BOP) that was not intended to be used under that pressure at the sea floor is poor well planning. BP is pretty much fully at fault here for all of these situations. Government ensuring that they had an emergency spill response plan wouldn't have saved BP from fucking up the situation from the start.

Maybe they should have used the Hanson Laboratories designed Maximum Magnitude Management Blowout Preventer instead.

Who knows, that's not the field I'm in. I'm AWARE of what the function of the equipment is, and why it's so important, but I don't have a handbook on that product line.

Everyone is so worried about how this oil leak will kill the planet and the planet is doomed. No. The planet will survive. It will self heal like its done for millions of years, slowly filtering the oil and organic poisons away and spawning new life where old life has died.
On the other hand, people are fucked. Pack your shit folks, the planet is bleeding and I think it's pissed. I'm waiting for a tornado, volcanic eruption, or earthquake to hit, just to remind us who's fucking with who.
Even if they magically stop the leak at the bottom of the ocean tomorrow (which they won't) the amount of oil already in the ocean, and the wetlands that are already fouled, is enormous. You can still find oil in Prince William Sound from Exxon Valdez if you dig a little bit on the shoreline. That thick crude shit just doesn't degrade quickly. Eventually bacteria will break it down, but it could take 30-40 years for the oil being spilled now to go away completely. Generally it degrades more quickly in warmer places like the gulf than it would in Alaska, just because bacteria grow better in warm water, but its still long-term devastation.

I for one am upset that the environment is leeching all of our hard-earned oil without paying a fair price for it, and that potential freeloaders could be getting rich off the system just by turning on their taps to get free oil... taps which they're already using to get free water!
Well, it's big, but at least it'll be able to be diluted to natural oil seepage levels within years and won't render the area off-limits for decades like Chernobyl did to a sizeable area of Ukranian forest.
I love that commentators have been calling this Obama's Katrina, which makes no god damned sense.
Katrina was a natural disaster. The government has an entire organization that is supposed to be equipped to aid places hit too hard to sustain themselves. The whole idea of FEMA is that they can do this, and they failed.
The oil spill is because a corporation done fucked up. The government doesn't haven any sort of equipment to handle it, because it's not an oil company. All it can do is get on BP's ass and make them pay out for what they've done.

I'm surprised this Flotila raid hasn't been called Obama's Cuban Missile Crisis yet.
