I got a fairly decent digital one for like $50-60 on sale, and while I was initially apprehensive, I'm glad I got it.
Being able to chart my progress (to a degree, of course) quantitatively has helped me see that significant improvement has been made over the months. I mean, if you asked me if I was lighter than I was 6 months ago, I'd say yes, but I wouldn't say that I thought I looked 25-30 pounds lighter.
"Look, scale, I hate you and you hate me, but we're in this together" became more of a buddy comedy than I expected it to.

I got the nothing with it. Free soda back at the office, so I don't need to buy a drink in-store.
(P.S. Drinkin' diet, so I got that at least.)
I'm going to drink some water until it is a little later and I can hold out on my afternoon coffee no more.
Stop that. Now :P
Stop what? And why?
I'm sure he means the diet pop. Which, yeah, it's not great for you, but if you're otherwise struggling to not eat thirty chocolate peanut butter cookies and a deep fried pizza then, go nuts, have a Fresca.

I'm definitely in. Maybe I'll shed some pounds in time for PAX since this'll be my first year going and some people say first impressions are important. So is this officially starting July 15?
It was my birthday yesterday, and today I have a fridge full of cake and a freezer full of my grandmother's cheesecake. It is the dessert I get once a year, made specifically for me. It is the tastiest thing, and a birthday staple. =/

Nothing wrong with the occasional indulgance. Makes all the hard work worth it. If you really feel bad about it maybe do a bit extra excercise?

So have a slice at some point this week, and then take the rest in to work or something. If it's just sitting there, lurking, in your kitchen then you're going to eat it at some point, and that is as likely to turn into some kind of crazed cake binge as anything if you've resisted for a few days.

I got a decent weight watchers scale from costco for $20
granted, I glare at its number with suspicion
but when I am not living in some shitty dorm away from home, I keep it in the bathroom and weigh myself every morning after peeing and before drinking/eating anything.
It kept me honest and helped me track how I was doing. I know people say you shouldn't weigh yourself every day, because weight loss is about long term trends and not day to day tenths of a pound losses, but I had to make it a routine.
Without it I feel weird! What if I am lapsing! Hakkes wants her scale back

So, I don't even have a regular scale, think something fancy like this one, or this one would be a solid pick.
calipers are far more accurate tools than those impedance scales. they vary wildly based on a series of pretty much random factors, and are pretty much just a novelty. the most accurate cheap digital scale i've ever seen:

I do something similar, i weigh myself and record it at the end of every session in the gym (about 3 times a week if not more). I'd do it daily if i had a set of scales in the house.
I like it because despite fluctuations i can look back over a period of time and see the general trend. But that's just the nerd in me.
How many meals should someone be eating in a day? I don't eat breakfast or lunch, I generally eat between 6pm and 11pm.
I'm going to check out a gym on friday. I was checking out their website and they have a step aerobics and tone class on mondays that I may be interested in doing.

I've always been told that more meals of lower calories is better for your metabolism and helps you burn fat a little faster. 3 a day is average, but 5-6 is ideal, from what I've heard.

I'm currently in the one or two meal a day camp, and I think I'm gonna try emulating Michael Westen and get my yogurt on throughout the day.
I would sign up for this but I'm already kinda in the middle of losing a bunch of weight. I was about 235/240 a couple months ago and I'm down to 200 as of yesterday. Still have about 35 left though I guess :P
I mean, downsides, obviously: Lose clothes you once loved, must spend money on new things. But christ, it's awesome putting on a smaller size, and being all it fiiiiiits. Then getting rid of all your old shit and buying new stuff pretty much forces you to stay the same size, lest yer wallet suffer for new things.
I went from a size 12 last summer to a 10 directly after going from 178 to about 150...I thought eh, it's just one dress size, not a big deal. Then I don't know what happened, because while I slowly dropped over the school year to about 145-147 ish (REALLY not a huge drop, really just because I was hesitant to spend money on food and skipped some meals out of laziness cause I didn't want to cook :P), I suddenly started finding 10s and 8s too big, and now I wear a 6 or even a 4! It's crazy.
Unfortunately the weight loss was uneven >_>. Stupid butt/thighs
oh, the perils of being a LAAADY. i also lose unevenly! and pants sizes differ from brand to brand! nonsense.
Yeah, ideally you would be eating 4-6 smaller meals a day. But make sure they are *small* meals/snacks, not large ones! I eat two small snacks (~200 cals) a day in addition to my 3 normal meals, and this keeps me from being ravenous and overeating at meal time.
Just got back from my run. Running out here is odd, I'm the only woman wearing shorts. All the women who run out here keep super covered up (shirts, tights, shorts, vests, long gloves) even in the heat! I feel kinda naked. Especially since I have more flesh to expose than the average Japanese woman!

Is it too late to get in on this? I went to the doctor recently to check up on my hypothyroidism. Turns out I've gained another ten pounds but the TSH level in my blood has finally reached acceptable levels.
In other words, I have nothing and no one to blame but myself.
I'm currently 286 lbs at 5'9". I'm basicly all torso. My ideal weight is 200 lbs, but I'd like to set a goal of 230 to start out.
My main problem is lack of focus and just plain laziness.

If you go to a place like walmart, the clothes will even vary within size and brand. Ends up the name-brand stuff they have is actually name-brand-approved knock-offs.
Anyway, just think of the baggyness as slack for a skilled tailor.
For my plans, I'm living at home for the summer and my mom refrains from the meat of the mammal. That means that, outside of the over-large amount of dressing I like on my salad, my diet is already incredibly low if fat. The main task, then, is to cut my carb intake without drawing the all-seeing eye of my Jewish mother. After that, we will discover whether it is possible for a person to consume all the calories he needs from protein alone. One big strategy: eating only half my sandwich at 12 and finish it at three.
I'll put my start at 214 for now, and give something more up to date when I get around to weighing myself.

I'm pretty sure that it's less calorie burning (although hunger can lead to metabolic slowing) than it is spreading out your intake over the day so you never feel especially hungry, as you'll always have a little food in your belly. That way, you won't have to worry about binge eating or any of the adverse reactions associated with being hungry (especially fatigue). This isn't a new strategy as Orwell states it as being a common strategy among the poorest classes for eating on an extreme budget without falling victim to hunger in "Down and Out in Paris and London."
Got in 10 minutes on the stationary bike, 30 minute walk with the misses and a good 40-50 minutes throwing some weights around. I think I entered it all into Sparkpeople correctly. Who knows and who cares!
I'm trying to go the opposite direction and it's not going anywhere, so maybe this will help. 5 years ago I weighed 175, then I dropped down to 155 at 6'2". Now since it's been almost a year I'm up to 165 and still trying to get to 175 again. Maybe I need to start swimming again. I won't do a shirtless because I don't want everyone to hate me.

I care dorkman, I care.
In other news I am back on the wagon after an atrocious day yesterday. The problem with binge drinking is that I feel awfully depressed for days afterwards. Such is the conundrum of being an alchoholic i guess.
I have a boxing pt session this afternoon, so I guess he will punish me for my gluttony.

Started at about 380 lbs a year ago, I'm currently at 347 having gone down to 320 and back up to my current weight due to laziness, moving, marriage, and just generally being fat, but starting this week I've rededicated myself to getting healthy. The wife is onboard naturally, so that should help! She hovers in the 140s so she should be able to help keep me in line.
Okay, anyone that was before this post has been added to the new spreadsheet. Feel free to make any changes/add yourself. Also threw up a photobucket for those brave enough to post progress pics. Mine will be incoming.
I feel it's worth noting, for those of you who do like/need a little competition for motivation, the Spark page has a leaderboard. Which I would like to point out I am kicking all of your butts on right now. Gauntlet thrown. I dare you to do better.
I'm not competitive by nature, but something about the points leaderboard is just fun. It also has the added side effect of forcing you to keep track of your workouts and food intake if you want to earn points, so it's a good way to police yourself and stay honest!

OK, gonna go out for a run (mostly walk) tomorrow. I'm debating whether or not to go ahead with my plans to quit smoking now or wait until I get comfortable with my weightloss routine first.
I also need to give up soda, but that's gonna be rough because I'm pretty sure it's the caffeine in the ridiculous amount of soda I drink that makes it so hard to do.

We're all putting up starting weights, July is when we're all going to make a point of posting our update, if I'm not mistaken.
255 currently, aiming for 200. Someday.
My problem is that I actually eat too little. Sometime consuming 2000 healthy calories is a bit of a chore.

Cool, I've always been told it's not about a start and stop day anyways, it has to be a lifestyle change.
Does anyone else find it easier to stay away from "bad" foods if they're just more busy throughout the day? That seems to be the trick for me.
