Transition Lenses

Last H&A thread for the week, I swear.

I rolled over on my glasses the other day and need new ones. I've been interested in the transition lenses, that change to sunglasses when you hit sunlight, yet still retain your prescription. Anyone have experience with these? Should I get em, or avoid em? A few people have told me they rock, and a few people told me they suck.

They're total ass. Seriously. They never transition fast enough and if you're indoors with the lighting just a liiiiittle bit harsh, say from low hanging fluorescents, they'll tint slightly and make you look like an idiot. I tell you this as a glasses wearer, do not bother.

I have to disagree, at least based on my experience. I've had these transition lenses for about three years and they've been a solid purchase for me since day one. They're clear as a bell indoors and tint up quite nicely while outside. However, my wife got transition lenses with her new glasses about a year ago and they don't seem to tint up quite as much as mine do, so ymmv.

I had a pair in college and had to get rid of them. I did graphic design work and after a couple months they would still darken just fine, but it took about an hour to fully go from tint to clear.

If I were you I'd go with frames that supported magnetic clip on sunglasses. An additional benefit is that your lenses will be cheaper when you change out the prescription in those frames.
