The best songs to get sad to

I'm making a mix tape for a group of people. I have some early favorites, but lets really get into it.

For instance, an unconventional choice: Light of a Fading Star by Flogging Molly. Listen to it around 2 minutes in. That's what I'm going for. I could fill up a CD with songs like Blower's Daughter / Falling Slowly (both good songs that will probably go on there) but I need more!

My super exciting montage CDs are well received, but I'm struggling with this. My heroes need to remember what crushing failure feels like after so many triumphs.

I'm a published writer and have a very unique and interesting writing style. I'm also sharp and witty. My profile is well-written and hilarious. My messages are likewise brilliant. And I've been doing this stuff for...four or five years. I know what "works" in terms of good internet dating writing. "Works" in the sense of leading to a "date" with a human female.

    "Brick" by Ben Folds Five.
    "Denial, Revisited" by The Offspring.
    "Halo" by Oleander.
"John Wayne Gacy, Jr." by Sufjan Stevens.
"Letters to God" by Boxcar Racer.
"Needle in the Hay" by Elliott Smith.
    "Ordinary World" by Duran Duran.
"The Sounds of Silence" by Simon & Garfunkel.
    "Untitled" by Silverchair.
    "Unsatisfied" by The Replacements.

    Hurt - Johnny Cash

    Kingthlayer on
"And who are you," the proud lord said,
"that I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat,
that's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red
    a lion still has claws;
And mine are long and sharp, my lord
as long and sharp as yours."
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
    that lord of Castamere,
but now the rains weep o'er his hall,
with no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall
and not a soul to hear.

"Heaven Knows I'm Miserable Now" isn't that sad, and "How Soon Is Now" is so miserably overplayed. I'd go "Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me" for the ultimate sad song from their catalog.

El Perro Del Mar - Party

It does not get much sadder than this band.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor can make some pretty crushing music. But it isn't nessicarily good for a group like this.

His lyrics are not out right sad, but ever so slightly haunting and just on the edge of depression which makes them all that more saddening in my opinion.

Seconding Needle in the Hay and most Cure songs, also you can probably find enough super depressing Pink Floyd songs to fill as many CDs as you could ever want to make.

And Kenna's Hell Bent is probably the most depressing song I've ever loved:

I've only heard of about 3 bands/singers mentioned here and almost none of these songs. I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing. The ones I've seen seem to conform to the old "Everybody Hurts"-type sad song.

But in the vein of your Flogging Molly, I'll say Lady Luck by the Proclaimers (it's a bit obscure; youtube doesn't have any videos of it, so you'd need to test it out with a 30-second sample).

    Otherwise...

All for the sake of Love by Die Toten Hosen is somewhat similar (the original German version is around too), but this tends more towards the 'generic sad song' territory.

O Girlfriend by Weezer might be a bit transparent with its lyrics, but it might work as well.

Someone mentioned Hallelujah and its the only song from this thread whose title I recognize.

This version (in this case by Rufus Wainwright) from Shrek is probably the most accessible version.

[edit]Also, that Mad World song has bee ruined by Gears of War[/edit]

    For sure.

And if you're going to go with a Sufjan Stevens song then it's got to be Casimir Pulaski Day.

Kathleen Edwards had some sad songs on her last album, but this one was best. Couldn't find a studio version on youtube.

My mom has always found this song to be very sad.

    And there's always this:

More bipolar than sad, but this song can be very effective if you're in the right mood.

I also prefer the Amy Millan cover of I Will Follow You Into The Dark, but that's just me.
