Pokemon diet is something that is barely touched upon anywhere in the series, anime, or manga.

Many pokemon are pretty obviously carnivorous though. Given there don't appear to be any "regular" animals around, it can be assumed that their diet consists of other pokemon. Though that's kinda grim, the pokemon themselves are a fair bit grimmer then you'd be seeing in your animes or your video games so there you have it.

Short answer, pidgeys probably routinely hunt bug types. Tall grass is a harsh place.

Stats I said I'd cover once we got things going but yes, the system has stats for every pokemon that roughly approximate their stats in the game. They also gain moves at levels identical to those in the game. one major difference is you aren't limited to four moves, you may have up to 14(!) on any given pokemon, 7 learned naturally through leveling up, and 7 that are egg moves, tms, or other force-learned moves.

Basically when you catch a pokemon, I'll give you their stats and moveset and nature and so forth. There are quite a few features, especially for the capture specialist that allow you to choose some of a pokemon's aspects before you encounter it.

There aren't any IVs or EVs, but you can influence the base stats in a variety of ways, from the Breeder's features, changing their nature with a psychic, using vitamins, so on so forth.

Edit: Thank you, Tommy and notsoy.

You get a free pokedex (or poketch, or pokegear), 5 free pokeballs, 1 free great ball, and 2,000 P$

    Relevant Items

If it's not on the list, and something simple like camping gear, a regular weapon, something your character would reasonably have, etc. take it for free. Don't go crazy.

If you want something not on the list that you think is really dang significant, use you judgement. No hold items or anything, though, not yet.

Actually the 14-move split is between egg moves and level-up moves, and TM/tutor moves.

To wit, an example of my Breloom:

Spore, False Swipe, Seed Bomb, Leech Seed, Mach Punch, Sky Uppercut, Counter
Substitute, Focus Punch, Swords Dance, Stone Edge, Thunderpunch, Facade, Synthesis

Perhaps most importantly, there's no HMs, or any need for them. The moves themselves have been demoted to TMs if you wish to use them in fights. The overworld capabilities have basically been folded into the Pokemon themselves.

So, if you have a Metagross, or a Salamence, or anything big/strong enough to lug you around (that is, if it wants to - Snorlax may be disinterested in being used as a mount, for example) you can ride it as transportation. Blastoise, Lapras, and all those guys are innately capable of swimming, and anything that is taught Surf (Furret, Tyranitar, Rhyperior, etc.) can also thusly learn to swim.

To help with this, all mons may vary from their listed size/weight by as much as 50%/10%, respectively (I think). So you may just happen to have a larger-than-average Charizard (who is 5'7" by default, kinda underwhelming) that has no objections to flying around with you on its back.

Can I make multiple submissions? I'd be up for something like that.

Also I hope to catch/tame a ponyta/rapidash so I have something to ride while I wait for pidgey to level.

Also should we wait to see whose selected before choosing a pokemon move list?

Uh, as for Pokemon we'd like to meet...

Should we PM that stuff? I'm sure multiple people in this group would like to snag powerful mons like Tyranitar, Metagross, Salamence, Dragonite, Scizor - y'know, the top of the OU crowd, that stuff - and we probably don't want to incite potential squabbles like that (although since mons tend to be encountered in groups/families, that probably isn't an issue).

Thanks for the correction, notsoy, it's nice to have someone familiar with the rules around for when I mess up.

Problem is a whole lot of this stuff can be found nowhere but in one of the dozen archived threads DM Stark popped into, kinda aggravating to track down. I'll absolutely be making some stuff up like how much hp a trainer heals per day (a multiple of the con mod probably, Con stat if they have hospital level medical care).

Can't wait for the Beta to come out. Got high hopes.

No worries, aA. I did say to ask as many questions as you need, this stuff is confusing.

bratr - character looks great, excellent backstory.

Edit: I'm actually quite certain most of the people so far are not looking for the OU types. They appear to be looking for their favorites which may or may not be OU but so far... curiously seem not to be, imagine that.

    By the way guys

If memory serves, the splatbooks say that if you have a negative modifier from a certain stat, the skill related to that stat receives a zero instead of a negative value unless it's an Int/Wis/Cha modifier, in which case having a negative modifier can set you back.

And if we're all starting at level 1, shouldn't we all get a free feat in addition to the extra stat point? Or is having both class features considered an extra feat? The doc's wording is a bit weird on that.

If I want to powergame I play something like Shoddy, If I roleplay, I'm going to try and win using my favourites. I am not going to roleplay a relationship with a Aerodactyl when I don't find anything about him interesting.

At least thats my take on the whole thing

From the thingie I'm looking at, at level 0 you don't have any features. Its basically that point in the games where you wander out of your room, your mom says some stuff and you go to the professor's residence.

One you get your first pokemon, and get handed a pokedex is when you hit level 1, get your first feature, and a ability point.

I don't remember anything about no negative modifiers, although the character sheet I'm looking at has some of the "skill" analogues noted to be "+0" if the modifer of the relevant ability is negative. Might be an updated (or outdated) version of that.

Edit: on rereading, that's exactly what you were saying, good show.

Nope, buizel is a fine choice.

The suggested starters are based off a balanced movelist, especially in the early levels, and typically a three form evolution.

It's part of why I wanted to put off the stating of the 'mons if someone picks something that's going to have bubble as it's strongest attack for the first 20 levels I may take a page from notsoy's book and give them a decent egg move to make up for it.

    Backstory/Description:
Dashiell was born the son of a prominent local businessman in Sootopolis City. From the very start, his parents knew he was a... motivated child. He was walking by his third day out of the womb, and had learned basic martial arts techniques by the age of 3. His ambitions did not end there, however. By 16 he had started a fast expanding personal gym, expounding his favorite motto to the pudgy masses of Hoenn, "AMBITION! MOTIVATION! DRIVE! THESE ARE THE THINGS ON WHICH CHAMPIONS THRIVE!" Voted "Best Young Entrepreneur" three years running, Dashiell soon began to search for further challenges. One day, as he was meditating among the cliffs of his volcanic hometown, the young Chandler came across a sleeping Geodude. Realizing his chance, he quickly beat the Pokémon into submission and captured it. Upon returning triumphant to town, he showed off his newest prize to the members of his fitness gym, and came to a terrible realization. His Geodude- his Geodude- I can barely force myself to continue. The reason he had been able to catch it so easily.... the trait he detested more than anything in the world... the pure shame.... his Geodude was criminally lazy. That was the moment Dashiell knew he had to prove he was still the best thing in Sootopolis. That was the day he began his journey to rumored HUGE EVENT occurring at the Pewter City Museum.

Dashiell's is a young, well-built man constantly dressed sharply, wearing business suits even while weightlifting and boxing, often shouting at questioners of this behavior, "DRESS SHARP! FEEL SHARP!" His ridiculous self-confidence and arrogance belie a sharp grasp of situations and killer business instincts.

    Pokémon he'd like to fistfight:
    Tyrogue
    Hitmonlee/chan
    Machop/choke/champ
    Mankey
    Primeape
    Onyx
    Sandshrew/slash

    Uh...

In that case, I guess I'll post my wishlist and add it to my original character sheet:
    Squirtle
    Larvitar
    Beldum
    Togepi
    Nincada
    Riolu
    Chimchar
    Staryu
or any of the evolved forms of the above

And FYI guys, don't forget the origins of some Pokemon. We're pretty unlikely to find wild Aerodactyl or Omanyte, if any of them at all. Even within the scope of our story, they were only recently restored from fossil remnants, and probably don't exist in large enough numbers to return to the wild as a stable population.

'Course, if we happen to dig em up or liberate them from criminals, then that's another story...

Took a cursory look at aA and Nerf's characters, amusing backstories. I'll check the mechanical stuff later.

Since folks were interested, here is a list of the benefits of all the different abilities a pokemon may have. Most of them are pretty close to the original, a few have changed in interesting ways though so check em out here.

Other then the usual stats, a pokemon also has something called Capabilities, these define stuff like how fast a pokemon can run or swim, and also a few thing that they couldn't do in the games but you'd expect them to be able to do in a tabletop game, enjoy.

The shame! the shame of it all!

So yeah, getting an axe. As for Pokemon I want to catch, grass types are obviously a first choice. I would especially like to get a Snover. My Pa's most loyal companion has been Sapin, an Abomasnow. Cacnea and Paras would be cool too.

Also, I'm adding a wood axe to my equipment.

    A lot higher.

    According to the google doc:
Hit Points (HP) - Your character's ability to take damage without being knocked out or killed.
    - Equal to your character's Con Score x 5 (The score, not the modifier!)
So, his HP should be 50?
