Yeah, the vampires aren't the critical thing, just a decent setup and that artifact. Something that doesn't take 6 turns to attack would probably be the best thing though, although I'm sure a wraith would probably work as well.
Honestly while cheap, it takes less time to keep reloading and wait for the perfect setup. The perfect set up being you able to set up some elites in the middle that will attack before her dragons, and her spawning the dragons to the sides and leaving herself wide open.

When you have that artifact, your charging units have so much HP that it's really hard to get hit as long as you put something in front of the enemy's armies.
Oh god I just ran into a game killing bug. I fought a random encounter and when I lost I clicked continue and my character was no longer there, and then like an idiot I saved before I tried to reload the game. Now when I load my save it's just and empty map.
You guys were right. After like 15-20 attempts to kill Ludmilla, I switched to that artifact and took her down the very next time. Not sure how I feel about that...
Oh wow. I might have to double-dip; this game screams out for online multiplayer, and it's really just one of the best puzzle games made in the past year or two.
EDIT: Okay, the redrawn artwork is really awesome:
I'm definitely considering double-dipping, especially since I managed to buy the DS version at launch for like $20 at Best Buy. Online multiplayer sounds delicious, though I wonder how the balancing will go.
So I finally found a copy of this game, and I love it. I read through the whole thread hoping for a few tips. I think the only thing I don't understand is why removing your own walls would help?
Also, I can't get past the first puzzle and I'm sure I'm just not understanding something about it. A hint would be nice rather than googling the solution.

All kinds of reasons. If they're lined up vertically, man-wall-man-man, that's a free attack, and you get one extra move too. If they're set up sideways just right, you can do the same thing to make more walls and make other combos fall into place. Just have to look at the screen, and what removing a wall might do to line stuff up.
Bump with an update on the PSN/XBLA release: Looks like it's set for a September release now. The preview post talks about "online & local versus multiplayer, a new co-op multiplayer mode, tons of balancing tweaks, new unit abilities and so much more," which I think we knew about before, but I'm curious about the balancing tweaks and new abilities. It'll also be playable at E3, for anyone lucky enough to attend.
So you're just reinforcing the fact that I am going to buy this again.
Hell yes, and you're going to like it!
Interestingly, one of the specific tweaks the Capybara rep mentions in that PS blog post is something about removing some of the crazy luck factors from boss battles, especially the final boss battle.

That's how good it is.

Unicorns are like cheating.
