[PTA] (Encore IC) Mine Hats: they're all the rage in Sinnoh

edited October 2010 in Critical Failures
This will now be our IC thread, so place in-character posts here. OOC posts can go here.

The Introduction
Hello, my friends, and welcome to the world of Pokemon!
800px-Pt_Sinnoh.png

This world is inhabited by creatures known as Pokemon, who are as numerous as they are unique.
abandonedrooftop.jpg

To some they are mere pets…
PokemonPets.jpg

To others, they grant convenience in their everyday lives…
PokemonConvenience.jpg

Yet, more than those reasons, humans are well-known for using Pokemon as their proxies in combat with one another. They call themselves Pokemon Trainers, too weak to rely on their own strength.
PokemonProxies.jpg

That is the world you are entering, my friends. A world full of wonder and adventure, strife and tragedy, heroes and villains. What fate awaits you, I wonder?

Oh, who am I? Well, my identity is unimportant, for now, but I'm sure we'll meet soon.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The Rules
And what’s this?
This is a play-by-post game using the Pokemon Tabletop Adventure (PTA) rules. The players will be assuming the roles of Pokemon trainers from all walks of life, including Researchers, Coordinators, Psychics, Ace Trainers, and several other specialties.
Aren’t there already three other threads running this game?
Yup, and by assumed popular demand, now there’s a fourth.
How do you join?
If you can post at least once daily, you’re welcome to submit a character. Please keep in mind that while there is a once-per-day minimum on posting, you’re encouraged to post more than that. The pace of the story will be determined by the availability of the players; there are very few times when I’m not near a computer.
How many players are you going to take on?
Eh, I don’t know, probably five or six. Maybe more, we’ll see.
Game Rules
Here are compiled notes of many of the game’s rules, put together by Marshmallow. There are files on the main rules of character creation, class features, and information concerning how the various abilities of Pokemon are used in-game.
The first three will be the most important for character creation.
Main Rules
Meet the Classes
Main Features List
Extra Class/Advanced Features List
Items List
Pokemon Abilities List
Pokemon Capabilities List
Pokemon Moves List
Along with creating the stats of your character, be sure to create their backstory and pick their starter. Acceptable starting Pokemon are those that evolve at least once and are capable of learning at least a couple decent moves. If the Pokemon in question is something really rare and/or powerful (concerning type, starting movelist, etc) there had better be a very believable reason why the character has it. If you pick a Pokemon whose starting movelist isn’t very combat-worthy (Abra comes to mind), then I will provide Egg or TM moves to give them a fighting chance.
The creators of previous PTA threads included lists of example potential starters, separated by region. I won’t include them here, but you’re welcome to check the OP of their threads to see the lists.
Starting items will differ slightly from character to character, but for a baseline let’s assume everyone begins with 5 Poke Balls, 1 Great Ball, 3000 Pokedollars (you can spend this money buying items during character generation), travel supplies (clothes, something to sleep in, etc), and things that fit their character (personal items or tools of their trade). Things for the last category should be within reason.
Please include a list of non-legendary Pokemon you would like your character to encounter during the game (No more than 10, please).
This game system is based off the Pokemon Manga more than the anime or games, just like the other PTA games in the forum. I’m going to quote notsoy from the CF Leftovers thread because he pretty much hits the nail on the head for the explanation of what this means both for the story setting and the in-game rules:
notsoy wrote:
What this means is that the world as a whole is much more dangerous than you may be thinking. Wild Pokémon and unsavory fellows alike will be all too happy to attack en masse, or to attack you instead of waiting to see the Pokémon you send out...unless you defuse the situation before it comes to that, of course. And if things go south and you go down, let’s hope your teammates can bail you out…or that you pass the saving throw against death.
Furthermore, PTA standard for settings is a required minimum age of 18-21+ in order to receive a Trainer's license. This means that anybody who is currently licensed as a Pokemon trainer is at least that age, including the Gym Leaders and almost anybody at a Pokemon Gym. After all, what kind of sick fucks would let their 10-year old kids muck around in the wilds near untamed monsters, especially when two-foot tall rats can bite through concrete?
PTA contains the structures and rules to do most anything you normally do in a Pokémon video game – trade, battle, explore, capture, breed, etc. There are also tons of other things to do in the PTA framework – depending on your class, you can tinker with or create special Poke Balls (among other things), teach Pokémon moves they normally couldn’t learn, temporarily befriend wild mons and use them seamlessly as allies of the moment, or many other things. Speaking of which, one such feature is that your Pokémon have innate capabilities that can provide much utility, often subsuming the need for the video games’ HMs as travel devices – between a Blastoise and Metagross, you can rip obstructive trees out of the ground, traverse the seas and skies in style, and push or break any rocks that get in your way without needing specific moves for those tasks.
What about the location and setting?
The story is set in the Sinnoh region (from the Diamond/Pearl/Platinum games), approximately three years after the events of said games occurred.
With summer having just started, there has been a region-wide announcement of a monument unveiling at Lake Verity, near Twinleaf Town. This is part of a special joint effort by the Sinnoh Pokemon League and the Sinnoh Historical Society to “keep the legends of our home fresh in the hearts and minds of the young and old alike.” There will be similar events at both Lake Valor and Lake Acuity at the same time, a simultaneous unveiling of three new monuments.
To prevent the events from being glossed over by the general public, all the players involved have orchestrated the announcement of several “side-events” that will be happening alongside the unveilings: Pokemon contests, trainer tournaments, technology expos, and special shows hosted by various well-known celebrities. To drum up even more excitement, they've taken to calling it the Guardians' Festival.
While the unveilings have garnered some attention, the side-events have fostered an overwhelmingly positive response. With something for practically anyone whose life deals with Pokemon, the Guardians' Festivals will, without a doubt, draw in huge crowds from across the whole region.
If you have any questions concerning anything about the game, please don’t hesitate to ask.
Also, thanks to notsoy for the quote and thanks to Marshmallow for all the information together so we could play this game in the first place.
    Well the cool ones were already taken! :P
    Edit: Honestly choosing my region was the biggest difficulty, but in the end I decided on Sinnoh. I don't have anything against Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald, but they never had anything that stood out to me too much.
    The Dawn and Gengar one is fantastic. Whoever suggested that one is a hugely cool guy I bet.
    Also I would love to make a character for this, despite already running a game. Might be worth a shot just to see what kind of character I'd make, you know, if I could.
    If by some bizarre chance we still don't have enough game for people who want pokemon, I kind of want to run a somewhat "sandbox type" game with a few major events in the Hoenn region, perhaps with more than one party. As it stands now I have too much going on to design that game and want to see how all the other GMs work their games. Maybe in a couple of months.
    Going to resubmit Clyde into this game, though first [strike]DJPdfa[/strike] Wolf General: do you have any qualms with Chatot as a starter? I could work a Ralts being the starter instead if that's the case.
    I have been alerted to the presence of this game. I'm toying with the idea or resubmitting Sedo. He might just have too much gross emotional baggage that DM's don't want.
    And Hoenn was the worst region. It was bleh.
    My opinion: 1. Johto 2. Kanto 3. Sinnoh 4. Hoenn
    Resubmitting Brayek with large update.
    Name: Brayek Hardmann
    Age: 20
    Gender: Male
    Origin: Kanto
    Background
    The only son of Mike Hardmann, owner of the Hard-Man line of personal and pokemon fitness gear, Brayek had a close relationship with his father and traveled with him to conventions and product demos. During their travels together, Brayek would hear many stories about his father's exploits as a pokemon trainer and how he gave up his dream of being a professional trainer in order to provide for his family. Hearing these tale, Brayek set his mind on following his father's footsteps.
    Recently, a Golem lost its footing during a demonstration and fell on Brayek's father, crippling him. As this happened publicly, many people no longer trust the Hard-Man brand as being safe. Facing bankruptcy, Brayek left his mother and sisters to take care of what business they had left to become a pokemon trainer and fix his family's bad name.
    What with the family finances being what they are and his father's back being shot, Brayek couldn't take any of the stronger pokemon(but mooooom, if I take the Steelix I'm SURE to make some money!) on his journey. His father, however had a freshly hatched Aron hidden away to make for a 21st birthday present, and gave it to Brayek, saying, "Make the family proud, son." With that, Brayek heads to the Guardian Festival in Sinnoh, hoping that his photography will get publicity for his family's company there.
    Stottol, while tough and loyal, is as paranoid as hairs on the back of your neck. He constantly looks behind him for stalkers, and frequently comes out of his pokeball at night to patrol the area. As much as he dislikes strange people and pokemon, he loves nothing more than to show his strength at contests.
    Appearance: With short black hair and a middling physique, Brayek is a fair 200 pounds at 6'2. He normally wears a heavy duty jacket bearing the 'HARD-MAN' eblem; a very large, muscled man hold a Golem in each hand, with the Golems holding up the 'HARD-MAN' letters.
    Backstory:
    Sedo is a pretty unique case in the pokemon world. He is probably one of the only people to fear all types of pokemon. Since he was first able to talk he expressed his dislike for pokemon. His mother and father had no idea what to do. After all, they couldn't simply release their personal friends/houseworkers into the wild! They tried to get Sedo interested in Pokemon time and again. They showed him the cute and fluffy pokemon like Jigglypuff and Togepi. They told him time and again that there was no future for anyone who couldn't work with pokemon. Sedo would have none of it. He would barely tolerate the pokemon he had seen since he was born, but any new pokemon were absolutely out of the question.
    His 18th birthday came and passed. No interaction with the outside world. No love of pokemon. His parents got him a pokemon for his 18th birthday. They had caught it in the forest a little ways away from their house. A nice little Pineco. It stared up at Sedo with it's cute little eyes and his parents smiled proudly at him. His dad asked him if he wanted to give it a nickname. Sedo uttered a single sentence and ran to him room.
    A few days later when Sedo came out of his room to eat some food, a Pineco was sitting on the floor in front of him. It proudly stated it's name on a little red ribbon tied to it. Sedo turned away in digust. He hated his parents sense of humour.
    His mother and father wouldn't give up trying to get him to train his first pokemon. They taught him basic feeding, cleaning and handling skills, but he never grew to like his Pineco very much. He took care of it. Like taking care of a dog who belongs to an aunt who's vacationing for a few months. You may not like the dog, but you make sure that it stays healthy and happy.
    Sedo never made it very big. His inability to work with even his starting pokemon impaired him to much to get a stable job. He tried the only job that didn't entail pokemon. He trained his mind for years trying to become a succesful psychic. However the most he was able to do was lift small objects. He thought that maybe once he read someones thoughts, but the moment quickly passed. After a decade of trying to work, he shut his business down and decided to become a wanderer. He never found that perfect someone and had a dream house. He never had good friends to carouse with. They all had pokemon. A few years ago he heard of a young boy who had defeated an evil group with just his pokemon. He didn't really care. The world for the most part passes him by.
    He's just wandered into a new city. There appears to be quite a bit of celebration going on. A festival for someone or another. Sedo just wants to find a nice comfortable ditch to sleep in. And some food for I hate you of course.
    Description:
    Sedo is very worn out looking. His clothes are pretty stained. His hair is turning grey. His facial hair runs rampant. He's very gaunt. He often has a cigar lit up even though he doesn't have any money. He has brown hair and blue eyes. Very tanned skin. He is of average height.
    He is very introverted and shy. He never interacts with anyone if he can help it. In the very few pokemon battles he's been in, he fights very defensively, hardly ever attacking and just waiting for the wild pokemon or excited trainer to get bored and go away.
    Pokemon he wants to have:
    None technically but for the purpose of running the game smoothly
    Shellder
    Skarmory
    Onix
    Scyther
    Paras
    Magikarp
    Gastly
    Tauros
    Salt: It's a d20 RP system, à la D&D or Dark Heresy.
    Lemming: We only have two of the ~6 required players after a few days, so I'd say you have a decent amount of time.
    There's a list of suggested ones in the OP of the other PTA threads, for ones with 3 evolution stages and generally good stats/movepools.
    They usually start at lvl 5, and if the species is not unbalancingly good, you can probably get away with adding an egg move
    Ok, so Oddish or Cubone would be a good starter, but something like Muchlax wouldn't be?
    It's really up to you (and the DM). I meant more like, that larvitar in notsoy's game is an exception, not the rule.
    Oddish actually has pretty decent stats (but vileplume's aren't so great for a 2nd evolution), and absorb will allow you to attack, and has a good assortment of status effects.
    Cubone..I would probably not suggest. It has low stats other than defense and it's movepool is pretty much 2d20 or worse until a pretty high level.
    Munchlax would be pretty strong, he has really good base stats, but a bit limited movepool. better than cubone anyway.
    Of course, keep in mind that I'm a silly goose who's not only running a hustle togepi, but a physical based one at that!
    Thanks to Spoit and Carnarvon for answering questions in my place.
    Lemminghead- At the moment there's no set time limit for when recruiting will close. 24 hours from the point I notice we have 6+ applicants will be a good bet; I'll be sure to announce when the "countdown" starts.
    Hippie- All you really need to look at the first three links I put up to make your character. As for starting Pokemon, I've decided I'm going to do it on a case by case basis. Good ground rules are A) it needs to evolve at least once and B) it should be able to learn at least a couple good TM/Egg moves. Like I said, though, case-by-case basis. If you've got a great idea for your starting Pokemon, or there is one particular idea you really don't want to let go of, then you're welcome to post it here or PM me about it to see if it's alright. I don't want to stifle anybody's creativity, I just want to make sure all the players have fun.
    Redid Clyde's bio a bit, added a humorous segment about what Clyde did after heading to New Bark City that I think does a good job of characterizing him. And ugh, two coordinators applying for a game again XD
    Intro/Hook:
    "Greetings, fellow pokemon trainers! It's a pleasure to meet you all! Where are you all from?"
    Expo: "chaaat! What chumps! chaaat!"
    *eyebrow twitch* "Expo...be nice...ok?"
    Expo: "Liar! Liar!"
    Clyde Ermyne Hemmet
    Age: 18
    Class: Coordinator
    Level: 1
    Hometown: Goldenrod City
    Home Region: Johto
    Stats:
    STR 8
    DEX 6
    CON 18
    INT 10
    WIS 6
    CHA 16
    (+2 Dex, -1 Con/Cha before level 1)
    Derived Stats:
    HP: 90 (85 before level 1)
    Evasion Bonus: 0
    Perception: -2
    Academics: +0
    Persuasion: +3 (+2 before lvl 1)
    Description:
    Somewhat powerful build heavily masked by frilly, expensive brand-name clothing. Blonde hair and blue eyes, with smooth, blemish-free skin except for subtle calluses in his palms. Maintains a heavily styled (with obvious hair gel) hairdo. Think someone trying to look like a model for a popular clothing brand, to the extent that some may find it obnoxious.
    Background:
    Clyde Ermyne Hemmet grew up in a very rich, highly pedigreed family and was spoiled as the firstborn child, never really hearing the words "no" due to said parents’ lack of experience, despite warnings from more experienced relatives. While his bratty nature was tolerated and even seen as somewhat endearing to his doting parents as a child, his obnoxious, two-faced personality grew and began to irritate his parents when he became a teenager. It caused so much grief to them that when he turned eighteen, his parents were all too excited to force him to apply for a trainer's license and kick him out of the house. Hopefully the roads and dangers of wild Pokémon would teach him some respect for others.
    While initially seeming like a polite (too much so in fact), nice, non-confrontational, charming gentleman, Clyde has a two-faced personality developed from years of experience of getting what he wants. While not a bad person per se, his motives are invariably more selfish than he lets on and his language is much fouler when he is alone or with other people who have discovered his true nature. He may win a match with a modest handshake while in his mind he has come up with eight different ways to taunt his opponent, and hides great jealously when others upshow him. In essence, he’s a lot less mature than he tries to act.
    With the meager (by his standards) allowance his parents gave him to prepare, Clyde ended up picking Expo, his chatot, at a Pokémon ranch. He figured that as a Pokémon that could mimic the human language, he could teach his chatot to be as naturally charming as he was and win Pokémon contests to maintain the lifestyle he has grown accustomed to with contest winnings.
    Things didn't go as planned, of course. Expo does not seem to learn the phrases Clyde tries to teach him, and instead blurts out the nasty things that Clyde says to himself about others when he is alone, using Clyde's voice. And sometimes even coincidentally saying what Clyde is really thinking. This of course, makes Clyde angry... which gives Expo more things to say. Clyde halfheartedly wonders if Expo's inclusion at the Pokémon ranch was some sick joke played by his parents.
    Clyde recently embarked to New Bark City, but ultimately arrived too late to acquire a ticket for the New Bark College opening event. Clyde left the town in a mope, and made his way back to Goldenrod. To his parents’ frustration he spent the next month moping there. Apparently Clyde’s trainer’s journey was doomed to failure without a proper “send-off”, despite countless others proving otherwise. Exasperated, they agreed to send him on a boat to Sinnoh to take part in the Guardians’ festival. They didn’t mention that he’d be heading there on a fishing boat…and helping to crew the ship to pay for his passage.
    Clyde has arrived in Sinnoh, with filthy clothes, a good deal more physical endurance, and the first (genuine) tan in his life. He is fully convinced that this is the worst thing that has ever happened to him, and considering Clyde, that’s probably true.
    (Clyde is essentially an immature rich kid that tries to pretend to be otherwise. Will have some maturity smacked into him as he learns how difficult it is to be a Pokémon trainer the hard way.)
    where are all the pre-teens in this crew
    I think, when I quoted notsoy and how he noted they can't officially be Pokemon Trainers until they're 18+, I didn't think it through enough. I'll likely go edit the OP right now.
    Clarification: Pre-teen trainers are fine, as are adult trainers. I have no particular dislike or like of any set age group, so pick whichever age you like.
    As for the fight to the finish idea, I'm not so sure my group stands much of a chance right now. The other threads all have some pretty nasty contenders and besides, we're outnumbered. *Winks encouragingly, but not-so-subtly, to further applicants*
