I must be insane, because I've resubbed to this game after 2.5 years and am enjoying the (butts?) out of it.

I have a DK on Dragonblight, but I'm mostly running around by myself and running Outland instances for fun. But I miss that player comraderie. If you guys still have room, I'd love to join you on Draenor. If you still need paladins, I'd be happy to roll one, or anything else really--except hunters. I can't stand hunters. I plan to bang out Level 20 in a day, and then run instances pretty much non-stop to 58. For me that's the most enjoyable way to level. Seems to be pretty quick too.

Anyway, let me know. Looking forward to (hopefully) joining you!

Leveling through LFD works well up until about 35, after that you're better off doing quests. The XP is better and it's so much less monotonous. Up until 58 anyway, then it's an XP freeway for a few levels.

That said, if you're healing-inclined we really need a fourth raid healer who isn't a shaman. I alternate between a shaman and a pally but until I figure out dual-boxing on the same account I can only fill one spot.

In other news if anyone has a healer or a tank who can help me with the last half of leve 77 on my mage this afternoon, I'd like to get it done so I can queue for the Summer Festival boss and get my Socialist health care epics.

Went really well, mostly one-shots for all of the hard modes excluding stupid Flame Leviathan. I'm not sure whether to extend the lockout or let it reset, since we killed Hodir the normal mode way and we'll have to do him on hard for the drake.

P.S. For Hodir hard we're going to need: 1 tank, 1-2 healers, and 7-8 dps. Do any of our healers have DPS offspecs?

I've got a dps spec and fairly good gear to go with it if I learn to play the damn spec.

Just roll on up. It's hard to advise you on what classes we're going to be looking for when you get to 80, so play whatever you like.

We've had a healthy amount of fresh faces and alts in the lower levels, lately, so there's no shortage of people to chum around with.

I'd love to see them get a little more courageous with their raids. Maybe not for the entry level, but isn't "tomb filled with evil bosses" getting kind of old?

Why not have, I dunno, a castle defense raid. Divide up into 5 squads of 5 and man the battlements! Bosses occasionally come in, the walls could take damage as time went on, you could have NPC allies for fun.

Or a stealth raid! Infiltrate the enemy city. Fight guards, silence their runners! Send your scouts ahead to lower the bridge. Final boss is a gauntlet as you escape with the mcguffin with the whole enemy force on your heels.

Convoy defense raid? Convoy ambush raid. Extended airship battle raid with controllable planes. Naval ship-to-ship combat. A random once-daily world boss who showed up at one of 7 locations on a semi-random timer with a big ass pile of trash mobs. Raid where the mobs are actually controlled by players, who are getting honor for killing you while you get loot for killing them.

Or just change the setting up a bit. Have the raid fighting along the outside of a tremendous airship, or in the middle of a war (full of non-targetable fighters) working their way towards the enemy generals.

All of these are at least technically feasible, they've done them all before in one way or another. I'd really like to see some innovation for raiders beyond gear mechanics. Most of these have tremendous balance issues but at least they're not another loot locker.

    I love this post.

(In a totally Platonic sense, I assure you.)

I feel like I'm not really saying anything new or even all that interesting. Everyone's said something similar at one time or another. It's just that Blizzard's current raid model is a tremendous success, and nothing stifles innovation quite like success. ToC was probably the raid furthest from the current model, and everyone hated it. Hell, I hated it.

There's a million things you can do with "25 players go into a place, overcome challenges, collect loot." D&D 4.0 has been doing some really innovative things in this regard- treating puzzles and social interactions in the same way as combat challenges, for example. And it only took them 35 years to get there! But I don't think we're going to see that kind of action from Blizz until a new game is released, anyway. More's the pity, since every other MMO developer is essentially copying their actions with about a 2 year lag time.

What is it about ToC that people don't like? I loved it. A raid instance with no trash?! hell yea!

Was it the PvP Fight? That is a ton of fun and it's hilarious to watch people that don't PvP at all die a horrible death.

Is it the "OMGOSH SECRET BOSS" at the end? That doesn't make sense to me.

I can understand why everyone hates The Oculus, they give you these drakes and force to mount and unmount for no real reason. If there was another boss fight you had to use the drakes it would be different, but it is a little annoying having to use them just to get to the next platform and thats it. That said, I still enjoy the instance.

Same with Halls of Stone. Would be a great instance if it wasn't for that horrible encounter that takes 5 minutes no matter what, when the last boss dies in 15 seconds.

I don't know. Both Ulduar and ICC have some pretty different and out-there mechanics that are beyond "tomb filled with bosses" model. Flamewalker? Gunship battle?

I really like the Castle Defender idea. It would be awesome if they had some fights that broke the "killing the same dudes week after week" discontinuity. Kinda like in Kara, with the Opera house and Servant's quarters fights. I like random bosses, with wholly different mechanics. Mix it up, have the same loot tables so no one bitches about not being able to get their items.

    Forgive the double post.

Buuuut, the thing I hate the most about WotLK heroics is how many bosses divide themselves and then reform. They take forever to kill, and there's like 6 of them.

Four separate lockouts which all felt mandatory if you were in a serious raiding guild. Tier 9 cost badges, Tier 9.5 also cost badges plus a token, meaning you had to farm your ass off. Five re-used boss models that you had to see four times per week. A tribute to insanity achievement that was even worse than the old school Naxxramas immortality one. No period of trash for de-stressing between the fights. A complete interruption of the flow of the WoTLK story, with a bit of retarded horde/alliance belligerence thrown in. The fact that this failure pile in a sadness bowl was the immediate successor to ULDUAR, and that its' gear basically made Ulduar completely obsolete, keeping many guilds from ever clearing it fully. A final boss (Heroic Anub) who was so ridiculously unforgiving that people still look fondly on Algalon.

It was a worthy experiment but sometimes experimental results are negative. This one was super, super negative. Lots of raid guilds burned out during the ToC period. I know mine did.

Personally though I thought Faction Champions was one of the best boss fights ever designed. Going toe to toe with that many mini-bosses was just pure chaos every week, I loved it.

Ohhh, I didn't know about the badges issue with the gear. I only came back to the game recently when ICC was already out, so I thought ToC was a ton of fun.

The backstory to that makes it even better.

This paladin was a douche of the highest order. After Deathwhisper he made it clear that he was only there to get 8 badges. And so we kicked him right before the pull of the weekly boss.

Just got my Death Knight to 80 and I am feeling the sting of being guildless. Strongly considering transfering him to Draenor. If you guys have a use for him, that'd probably swing me over to the definite side of that. I've been playing/gearing him as a tank, and I tend to enjoy playing that way.

I've quit raiding with my current guild (due to it being 3 nights + a week, and I really only have time for one night) so I've been pondering transfering my new main somewhere else. I have a pally tank (mostly 232 / 245 with some 264) that I'd love to use, but as I already mentioned, I really only have one night a week that I could raid. Would you all have any use for that?

I also want to mention I'd love to form / run a 10 man raid group for cataclysm that is the same; one night a week / casual raiding.

Our entire officer core got into the beta so we're a bit hard to find online right now. Since it looks like there are a number of people maybe looking to join the ranks I'll try to be online as much as I can tonight (you'll find me on Celic or Cellophane).

A little more info for those thinking about making the jump:

We raid two days a week. Wednesday from 6PM until 9PM server time (PST). Sunday from 2PM until 6PM.

We are looking for just about anything, but primarily tanks and healers. We need two tanks and one healer for sure. DPS spots are going to be pretty tight if we get new tanks (have a couple tanks looking to make the switch to DPS due to time constraints).

We are 11/12 in ICC 10 and we'd love to have a few more folks hop on board and help us get LK down and start pushing into heroics.
