That Yuki sure is responsible. And trustworthy!

I feel like the latest update is lacking crazy dances however

Man, you guys. We have an entire game to get through here. If I go giving you Pharmacy Songs and Crazy Dances now the only thing you'll have to look forward to is me killing myself because I forget which enemies reflect Nuclear.

Man, I tried so hard to trudge through P1P, but I just couldn't stomach the almost nonexistent character development, the repetitive combat that would just drag on forever and ever even with the Skip and Auto options... the anemic roster of Personas, the money grinding to afford equipment upgrades and well... some UI quirks. (Oh, so even though I got this enemy's Card already, you'll only list Strong to Fire and Weak to Whips on its Analysis? Even though it also just happens to Repel Guns, Drain Ice and is Null to Expel? That's great.)

I remember playing the first one ages ago, probably around its release, and I'm pretty sure it was the Japanese version too, somehow. The P1P version is definitely a much better product, even if you dislike the soundtrack changes. The localization and westernization is particularly hilarious, standing out to me even more than the terrible UI and world map.

With that out of the way though, I'll definitely be following this LP, as I'm still curious as to how the game's story unfolds. :P

Alright, so like I said in the first post, this game has some really good music in it. So I'm going to share some of it with you now. But not the Pharmacy Song. Not yet.

No, right now, we're going with something that is sadly lacking from modern Persona games: Character Themes! Specifically to this post, all the playable character's themes.

We're starting with Alana's, because it is my favorite.
Ellen and Chris are next because they also have phenomenal songs.

The rest, in no particular order:
    Yuki
    Nate
Mark (Including his Japanese art! Worth clicking for that alone, really, if you've never seen it)
    Mary
    Brad
Alright, so maybe there was a slight order of "best to worst in my own opinion" but shhh.

I'll keep sharing music as it becomes relevant, and probably will include it directly in the updates from now on.

I don't know if I wasn't far enough or something, but none of the battles in P1P took me more than 30 seconds, which made another major problem, the battle theme

Hope you remember the battle music when the time comes, it's amazing.

Also, I'm positive Nate's is in a later game; it sounds really familiar. I think only Mary's and the Tower music got remixed for P1SP.

Nate's theme is remixed and used in P2:EP, when you first meet Nate and Ellen.

Of course I will. I may even not bitch about the PSP version's battle theme!*

I'll also be including both Hospital themes and the fuckawesome Awakening theme.

I'm splitting this up into two parts. Part 1 is words, words, words, and even more words! Part 2 will be our first taste of real gameplay.
When we last left off, John and co. finally made it to the Hospital after first visiting every other possible location in the city. Let's tune in and see what they're up to.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_040422_0234.jpg
MarkPortrait.pngAlways so paractical! Mary is in Room 302.
    YukiPortrait.pngMark, how'd you know that?

    SLUS_00339_18072010_124529_0687.jpg

MarkPortrait.pngShut up! My buddies told me. Hey John, let's hurry!

This is Mark's third and final personality trait. He's got a crush on Mary and is embarrassed about it. Anyway, with that little scene out of the way, we regain control. Talking to some of the other patients reveals some interesting information.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_040547_0750.jpg
I can never continue to work at Sebec if I let spirits bother me!

A mysterious little girl in black, hmm? I wonder if she's related to the girl in white we saw?

But enough of the patients in the lobby. Let's head out into the hospital proper, shall we?

SLUS_00339_18072010_124216_0875.jpgThat yellow room there is the entrance. The minimap is nice enough to colorcode the entrance/exit to dungeons for you so you can easily identify your escape path.

    The, rather pretty, Hospital Theme:
    A Girl At The Window

Most of the people in the hospital are pretty boring; Doctors and nurses yell at you if you go into an examining room before your appointment, patients hope they'll get better soon, things like that. One old man, however, mistakes us for his grandson and gives us advice that would make Philemon proud.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_040844_0906.jpg
What appears on the surface isn't necessarily the truth. You must find what lurks behind the mask....

But I think we've wasted enough time already. Let's visit Mary. She must be getting lonely by now.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_041407_0937.jpg
    part of rehabilitation, too.
Nurse: That's right, Mary. We'll go for a walk tomorrow.
    HospitalMaryPortrait.png.....
    SLUS_00339_17072010_041417_0812.jpg

Wait a minute...that doesn't tell us anything at all about her personality! Is she a troublemaker? Is she responsible and trustworthy? Is she a good cook!? You're slacking, game!

Doctor: Mary! Your friends have arrived! I'll see you later, Mary.
HospitalMaryPortrait.pngJohn...and everybody...Thank you. Mark, especially, thank you.
NatePortrait.pngWhy the special thanks to Mark?
HospitalMaryPortrait.pngWhen Mark came to see me last time, I told him that I'd like to see everybody...Isn't that right?
    MainPortrait.pngWell, actually we're here because--
YukiPortrait.pngYes it is...T.J. will come visit you, too, bringing a book of yours. I think it's called, "Gate to Paradise".
HospitalMaryPortrait.pngOh, she can still keep it if she wants...I've read it so much that I've practically memorized it.
YukiPortrait.pngOK, I'll tell her if I see her before then. Well, how are you doing?
HospitalMaryPortrait.pngI'm getting better. I'm seeing nice dreams now. I can't really remember much. But I do remember that I was dreaming about a very kind man like my father...
YukiPortrait.pngLike that doctor? He seems to be a nice person.
    HospitalMaryPortrait.pngI don't like him.
    MarkPortrait.pngDid something happen?
MainPortrait.pngDude, are you asking her if he--
HospitalMaryPortrait.pngNo, nothing like that. I just don't like doctors in general.
    MainPortrait.pngWhy isn't anyone letting me finish a--
MarkPortrait.pngAnyway...Umm...Oh yeah, how's your mother? She works for Sebec, right?
HospitalMaryPortrait.pngShe's not my mother! Anyone who loves her job more than me is not my mother! She doesn't care about me!
    MarkPortrait.pngSorry I asked...
    HospitalMaryPortrait.pngOh...I'm sorry...I didn't mean to go off on you like that...Ooooh!? No...Noooo!!!
    SLUS_00339_17072010_041550_0828.jpg
MarkPortrait.pngMary!? What's wrong? Are you OK!? Mary!
    YukiPortrait.pngCall the Doctor!

    SLUS_00339_17072010_041751_0859.jpg
    YukiPortrait.pngWill Mary be all right?
    MarkPortrait.png...Damn!

Mary is taken to the ICU, while John, Yuki, Mark, and Nate are left to stand around, worried and useless. But not for long.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_041802_0859.jpg
    SLUS_00339_17072010_041811_0046.jpg

YukiPortrait.pngWhat's happening? Is this an earthquake?
MarkPortrait.pngIf it is, it sure is a big one!

Once the earthquake subsides, Mark rushes to the doors to the ICU ward to check on Mary. Things don't go as planned, though.
    SLUS_00339_17072010_041831_0187.jpg
NatePortrait.pngHow can this be? That was the ICU room! What just happened to it?

They don't get to wonder about this for long, though, as a woman's scream tears them away from the ICU wall and down the stairs, where they're greeted by the strangest sight yet.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_041848_0843.jpg
    YukiPortrait.pngWhat are these things?
Nurse: These people came from the morgue. They're dead! They suddenly got up and started walking! That old man there tried to protect us but was struck down by them!
MarkPortrait.pngYou mean...These guys are dead, and now they're alive?! What the...!!
NatePortrait.png Old man?! You mean Alfred?
MainPortrait.pngCome on, man. Alfred isn't the only old man in this town. We talked to, like, five identical old men on the way to Mary alone.
YukiPortrait.pngActually...it is Alfred. He's sort of laying on the ground, writhing in agony.
    MainPortrait.png...Oh. Sucks.
    NatePortrait.pngAlfred!!!......Zombies! How dare you!

    SLUS_00339_17072010_041931_0156.jpg
    Awakening Legend
    YukiPortrait.pngBe careful!
MarkPortrait.pngBut they're all dead! What do we do?
MainPortrait.pngWhy not use your axe that you randomly have for no reason. Seriously, who carries an axe around with them?

A valid question, to be sure. But before John can get an answer, the center zombie leaps forward and takes a swing at him. Fortunately, John's able to dodge just in time. And then...well, things get even weirder.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_042108_0875.jpg
    SLUS_00339_17072010_042112_0406.jpg
    SLUS_00339_17072010_042120_0859.jpg

John's not the only one with this new ability, though...

    Mark has a Persona, too...
    SLUS_00339_17072010_042222_0187.jpg

    And Yuki...
    SLUS_00339_17072010_042322_0718.jpg

    Even Nate gets one!
    SLUS_00339_17072010_042333_0421.jpg

This new power makes short work of the zombies, and Nate rushes to Alfred's side.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_042756_0031.jpg
AlfredPortrait.pngPlease don't look so sad. It doesn't suit your handsome face. You're a fine young man. You'll learn to stand on your own one day...This is it for me. My days are gone.
NatePortrait.pngNo no no! I won't allow this to happen! Please, Alfred, hold on!
AlfredPortrait.pngGood-bye...Just one last thing, promise me that you'll stand on your own and become someone great in this world!
NatePortrait.pngYeah...I will...I'll become a great man someday, and I'll prove myself to you. You just wait and see, Alfred...
AlfredPortrait.pngMaster...I will always be with you in your heart and soul...
    SLUS_00339_17072010_042835_0531.jpg

Yuki moves to comfort Nate, but Mark tells her to let him be alone for now. They have more pressing things to talk about, anyway.

MarkPortrait.pngHey, John! Did you hear them just now? They said something to us.
YukiPortrait.pngI heard it, too. Could that have been the Persona?
MarkPortrait.pngIt said it would give us power, so I don't think they're our enemies. If we work it right, they might just help us out. Let's just call them Persona.
YukiPortrait.pngI'm not sure what to make of it just yet, but you could be right...I just have a bad feeling about this whole thing. Let's go check outside.

Before heading out, though, John checks on Nate...
    SLUS_00339_17072010_043028_0625.jpg
NatePortrait.pngIf you leave me, I'll be all alone. Nobody will be there to comfort me...Nobody will be...by my side...

There's...not really a lot we can say to that. It really makes you feel for the poor kid. He just lost the only person that treated him with kindness...

But don't worry, you'll go back to hating him and everything he does soon enough!

That's enough loitering. We need to see how bad it is out there.

MainPortrait.pngI don't know, man! Just tell them whatever it takes to get them to leave!
    MarkPortrait.pngPsh...Wuss. Alright, here I go.

    SLUS_00339_18072010_122616_0843.jpg
MarkPortrait.pngI'm really the demon prince in the human world!
    Pixie.jpgReally!? So...what do you want?
MarkPortrait.pngUh...you mean, you'll give me something?
Pixie.jpgSure! I'm super interested in that story! Oh, I know! I'll give you my Spell Card! You can combine it with other Spell Cards to make new Personas! But I'll curse you if you fuse me with weirdos!

The threat of the pixies safely neutralized, John and his friends continue their exploration through the hospital. It's pretty straightforward and linear, perfect for an introduction to the dungeon and battle system. There's even a free healing spot in case things go south for you. The rest of the trip can be summarized thusly:
    SLUS_00339_17072010_045800_0203.jpg
    SLUS_00339_17072010_045836_0562.jpg

    SLUS_00339_17072010_052132_0203.jpg

Eventually, though, we make it to the exit, where we find a Nurse trapped beneath a fallen vending machine.

YukiPortrait.pngJohn! She's still alive! Here, give me a hand!
NatePortrait.pngJohn! She's not going to live! Come or you'll be dead, too!
MarkPortrait.pngHey, John! The monsters are just around the corner!

Uh-oh. Looks like we have a dilemma on our hands. It appears we can either help the poor, Persona-less Nurse trapped beneath a vending machine or we can honor Alfred's final request that Nate become a good, strong, upstanding man by...running the hell away and leaving the Nurse as dinner for zombies? I guess. Whatever, fuck off Nate.

MainPortrait.pngFuck off, Nate. Don't worry, miss. We'll help you.
YukiPortrait.pngHold on to the fallen case while I pull her out...

    MarkPortrait.pngOh damn! They're here!

Sure enough, the zombies charge through the doors. But, they're not the only new arrivals.
    SLUS_00339_17072010_052804_0031.jpg
EllenPortrait.pngHello, everyone! Oh! There are demons here, too!?

EllenPortrait.pngDon't worry. I'm not as weak as you think!
    YukiPortrait.pngEllen, they're not normal.
    MarkPortrait.pngStop being arrogant!

Mark takes out a zombie with his axe, but two minus one is still one, and the second zombie rushes forward to swipe at Ellen. She manages to dodge just in time, and...

    SLUS_00339_17072010_053055_0468.jpg
    YukiPortrait.pngEllen? Are you OK?
EllenPortrait.pngNike...the Greek goddess Christian angels were formed after. That's me...I'm it...

This is the first and last time the Personas being based on mythological figures is ever mentioned.

    MarkPortrait.pngDamn...She's all looney.
    YukiPortrait.pngEllen!? Pull yourself together!
EllenPortrait.pngHuh!? I...I'm sorry. I'm OK now. I'm an angel that can bring you victory! I'll protect you from now on!
    MarkPortrait.pngStupid...We can do that, too.

    SLUS_00339_17072010_053130_0078.jpg

EllenPortrait.pngReally? So, I'm not the only one who was chosen? Hmm...
NatePortrait.pngEllen, you had a dream of a butterfly, didn't you?
EllenPortrait.pngHow did you know that? I've been having the same dream of this butterfly ever since we played Persona...
NatePortrait.pngI thought so...This dream we're all having is the cause of all this...
MainPortrait.pngThat's kind of a leap, isn't it? I mean, the cause of the powers, sure. That much makes sense, as far as any of this makes sense, but how do you figure the dreams are responsible for the hospital shifting and those terrifying, terrifying pixies out there? Oh and the other monsters too I guess. But mostly the pixies.
NatePortrait.png...Well. I mean, I guess...if the dreams caused one thing, they could have caused them all, right!?
MarkPortrait.pngAnyway...What are you doing here? Is it like this outside?
EllenPortrait.pngYes, outside is crawling with demons. There's no way out of town, either. I look around everywhere and found the school to be the safest place.
YukiPortrait.pngSo we're safe at the school, right? John, let's head back to the school.
EllenPortrait.pngGood idea! But, let's stop by the Shrine first. Mary's mother is hurt and in trouble.
MarkPortrait.pngHey, why didn't you tell us that earlier?
MainPortrait.pngSeriously. That seems like the kind of thing you'd open with.
    MarkPortrait.pngJohn, let's go help her!

And with that, our intrepid heroes set off, now with a full party of five people, to rescue Mary's mother.

Since this has been up for two days with no comments (:() this seems like a good time to ask:

For those of you reading this, and the Views counter and my Photobucket bandwidth assure me you are, what do you think so far? Is there anything you'd like to see more of, or have explained more in depth, or is there anything you'd like less of, etc. Like I said in the first post, this is my first ever Let's Play so any advice or comments are welcome and helpful. :)

I like it well enough. But then again, I'm easily pleased.

I will say, though, that in that last update you had a lot of pics of fighting demons and getting spell cards, but when we get to the nurse under the vending machine we get... zilch. Not even a little establishing shot. That was a bit weird and sudden.

I mean, if I know my Shin Megami Tensei, the game would've at least had a screen saying something like 'You notice one of the vending machines has fallen over. Someone appears to be trapped under it'. You could have used a screenshot of that instead of your own line of exposition before moving onto the talking heads.

Assuming the game actually did establish that scene in any way.

This. I'm enjoying this LP so far, but I don't really have much to say.

Also agree on the portraits. Actually, I have the means to dump the portraits from the game, so when I get around to it I might PM you a full set of PNGs, with and without transparency (if you're interested, of course).

Hm. I'm just cropping already enlarged screenshots and then shrinking them, so that could be it. I don't really have an eye for that sort of thing, so thank you! That's the kind of feedback I need most.

edit: obviously, The Anonymous came through for me because he rocks. Thanks, The Anonymous.

As for Wotan's suggestion...yeah I failed there :( I was hoping it would go unnoticed but I wasn't fast enough to get a screen before people started talking, and the text boxes completely cover up the nurse. You can see her in the shot where Ellen walks in, and then in the text shot after her Awakening you can see the vending machine is obscured. I will step up my F12 finger.

I don't mind the portraits at all as the designs are pretty simple. I don't need a higher res portrait to remind me how silly the American MC looks  .

Anywho, yes, I am enjoying it and I urge you to continue but I do have to echo cj's comment about, well, comments. This isn't a game that a huge number of people are drawn to, and at this point in the game you're not really asking for a whole lot of input from us either. Down the road where decisions have to be made you'll probably hear us peep up a bit more but for now I really don't have anything interesting to say besides "good job." And just saying "good job" after every update will probably cause you to think that I'm just some sort of condescending asshole :P .

I'm absolutely loving it so far Blackjack

The hardcore SMT player in me wishes for more throwbacks/references/comparisons to other SMT games in this LP, but otherwise its very good. I definitely enjoy your style of humor

    I enjoy the commentary.

It would help if you explain the contact system, especially the various ways you can give demons status effects by mixing emotions in the negotiation system.

Finally finished getting those portraits ready, you can grab them from here. They're in PNG format, in both transparent and non-transparent flavours. Feel free to use them for LPs/avatars/sigs/whatever. 8-)

So are you and CJ going to do every single Persona/Shin Megami game now?

I'd say you shouldn't do 4 because of Giant Bomb's Endurance Run. :P

Well, fRAWRst is doing a Persona 2 LP but there hasn't been a post in about a week. :(

And I'd probably never do 3 or 4 because I don't really have that kind of time on my hands. And also because the more I play 3 the less I like it.

Also, status update: I'm doing some grinding to show off what Persona ranks are and because I decided I want to show all the skills of all the Personas that I use (not of all the Personas because, again, not insane) so once that happens I'll put up a little informational update, explaining contacts and stats and so on. Then a full on update either later today or tomorrow.

edit: although, I guess I can't really claim to not be insane because I did decide to make at least an honest effort to getting Ashura for you guys. I'll explain what that entails later but for those of you that know...yeah.

edit 2: Do you know, I never got the eye on my file. :(

Or P3P as FeMC, but that requires technical knowledge or an emulator, and I doubt P3P works in one yet.

Eh. On one hand P3P just came out, but on the other hand it is Persona 3 so its not like there's going to be any major spoilers that no one who played the first couple versions won't see coming.

Before I keep going, a mini poll for you guys!

Like I mentioned, lots and lots of things were changed for the American release of Persona. Would it be more a) interesting or b) boring and stupid if I went over those changes? ie What Personas really are (That's not Leviathan, it's Illuyana! sort of thing), character and spell name changes, etc

I'll be hitting the major one, The Snow Queen Quest, regardless, but I'd like to know if no one would like it before I start cross referencing lists

It would certainly be interesting. Though maybe not for everything. I don't need to know if they replaced Yen with Dollars or Rice Balls with Hamburgers.

But stuff like Personas and things, yeah. That could be interesting.

But that one's interesting [strike]to me as a student of accounting[/strike]! They did replace Yen with Dollars but not in a straight 1:1 conversion. They actually took the exchange rate into consideration, so instead of having hundreds of thousands of Yen, you now only have thousands of dollars.

Huh - is it the usual 'knock off 000 to get dollars', or did they actually pin the exchange rate to roughly the one in use at that point in the 90s?

In any case - yes, I find all that stuff fascinating. It's very telling when you have Japanese publishers doing the localisation for America - just look at Elite Beat Agents, for crying out loud. A sea of impossibly blue eyes, strawberry blonde hair and freckles. And the Personas themselves will obviously be of great interest as well - I always though they were derived from a consistent mythology.

I don't know how in depth they went with the exchange rate, to be honest, but I'd be willing to bet that they just knocked off zeros. There's no cents in the game, so they'd have to round it anyway, and that seems the easiest way.

I assumed it was just knocking off zeros. I thought they changed the encounter rate, upped the experience in response, and then didn't fix the money correctly. I vaguely remember being fairly poor at the beginning of the game.

You don't have to do every change - just make a judgement on which you think are interesting and not.

That's probably why I was poor. That reminded me about the CodeBreaker casino game, so you made me sad because no other video game has replicated that.
