So the level 40 Gladiator quest ? Yeah, it's terrible. I thought i could get myself poisoned, then wander around and kill the 3 dragons without a problem.

Turns out you have to get poisoned in the same battle as when you get the kill.

It took 15 minutes to get one of my 3 gladiators poisoned.

Don't you have to actually get "envenomed"? Envenom is, like, super poison that only lasts for that battle and turns into normal poison after the fight ends. It's green vs purple bubbles on the status image.

Huh. What's the point of the Luminary class? They get a ton of charm, a charm buff spell, and... hm. Not seeing it. Looks like a way to distract things. And why do they get so much Magical Mending, with only like 1 heal spell?

Either way it's a bullshit quest.

I have the same feelings towards the L40 Paladin quest.

    They are Minstrel +

So they're pretty good at everything. And, given how frequently Charm seems to activate, having more of it can only be a good thing.

This game has one done interesting thing for me: Caused me to start using my DS as an actual portable system. That may sound strange, but my DS up until now has mostly been a huddle up on the couch/in bed type of system.

Now I've started carrying it to work with me and spending my lunch sitting in my car eating, playing DQ9 :P

Get them Giggling or Quaking in Terror. (Pratfall/Warshout) No seriously. Any of the annoying kill quests are made easier by locking the foe up with a non-status/status effect.

They're immune. In the end, drained their mana by letting them hit ME with Giggling and hitting them with my stick. I donno if Kamakazie uses mana, I also got very lucky and my first attack with Hot Lick took it out (10 damage).

Damn. I hate those bloody immunites. It's kinda random who and who not is immune. But I've had luck with a lot of the quest using Pratfall to buy me time. Sorry man.

Woo, suck it, Equinox! Finally exacted vengeance on my early party getting wiped constantly. It was a fairly easy battle with all that extra experience and gear under my belt. Picked up my first random map, a Lv. 7 something or other. If I end up going to a GameStop for that Tag meet next week, I'll have something to share for it, finally.

For those hunting Metal Kings in grottos:

Volcano class grottos, they appear in RANK 9 areas.
Water class grottos, they appear in RANK 8 areas.
Cave class grottos, they appear in RANK 10 areas.

    http://dragonquest9.com/609.html (メタルキング is metal king)

A summary of the grotto name and rank system is here:
    http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/937281-dragon-quest-ix-sentinels-of-the-starry-skies/55674123

And a summary of how to tell if your grotto (or rather, can have) metal slimes is here:
    http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/937281-dragon-quest-ix-sentinels-of-the-starry-skies/55694934

Note how NONE of the maps have ranks higher than what they call C (Rank 9) -- in order to go further, you have to go further down the stairs. Every 3 (5?) floors, the monsters change (going up a rank). To get to S rank (Rank 12) monsters you have to start at rank C (9) and go down to the last few floors.

Do you need to beat the main game before grottos start reaching the higher ranks? I've been running quite a few of them now, and I've found that the monsters and most of the bosses are just not a challenge.

It seems like when a new treasure map drops off of a dungeon boss the next dungeon is usually even easier than the one I just beat :|

Is the difficulty rating completely random or is there some kind of threshold I need to cross first?

What class is the hero in this video:

    きせ Kise
バト Bato - Battle Master (Gladiator)
バト Bato - Battle Master (Gladiator)
    そう Sou - Souryo (Priest)

It almost looks like he uses a group Fource spell, which would mean... Mahou Senshi (Armamentalist)?

More importantly, where do I get a pimp suit?

Quality/Rating is (Heros' MAX level + Number of times Hero has Revocated on a single job * 10 + Current Grotto's level).

So a level 30 hero, who has never revocated, in a level 30 grotto, will get a grotto of 60... +/- 10%

Yeah, he's an Arm. That was a group Life Fource on his second turn, after double Acceleratle. Plus I know the pimp gear is pretty much exclusively for Arms.

Imagine a JRPG that is not only traditional, but has a compelling plot, good advancement and combat mechanics, an incredibly sized alchemy system, gear collection, and rogues gallery, that plays to almost every benefit of the DS as a platform.

It's losing two staples of the series casino and new game +, and the reviews are still overwhelingly positive.

Also, it very elegantly combines pieces of a multiplayer action RPG with turn based RPG mechanics, almost a holy grail achieved there.

I think the last 3 have had new game + or so, including the remakes. Recently I've gone through 8 on the ps2, and the 4 + 5 remakes. Personally I don't particularly miss it, though that coupled with the lack of save slots make some of the achievements seemingly impossible to obtain.

None of them have NG+ at all.

They have a decent amount of post game content, what with 4 having a new chapter, 5 having a new dungeon, and 8 having a new location/dungeon.

This game's total content, by the way, is around 1/4 main story, 3/4 expanded post game material.

NG+ refers to starting the game from scratch with some benefit from your previous game.

Chrono Trigger had it that you kept every non story item, levels, stats, magic, that sort.

Other games only let you keep part of it.

DQ has never had a New Game+.

Yeah I think my terminology is wrong. I'm not talking about like in the tales games where you start with all your stuff and get more grade or whatever. Just the ability to start a new game without erasing the old game. Which I suppose is pretty much the same as a gripe for not having extra slots.

The idea in DQ9 is to not start a new game though. There is supposed to be a ton of after-main-plot content, almost MMO-like.

Definately. I've been getting almost a dungeon hack vibe from doing the grottos multiplayer. Basically playing through a DQ singleplayer campaign co-op, then delving into a roguelike-light co-op, withered any and all motivation I have to bitch about not being able to start over.

Besides, the reincarnation thing makes it easy enough to re-introduce progression if you've maxed your favorite class.
