the crowd reactions in those forge videos are hilariously over the top.

"So I can grab a piece and move the piece somewhere, and when I stop moving the piece then the piece will stop moving."

    EARTH-SHUDDERING WHOOP

Forge 2.0 does look teh awesome though <3

So I stopped playing Halo 3 a while ago, never quite cared enough, but Reach is looking amazing. Forge 2.0 suggests that I could make my preferred woodland combat environment. With a forest that we would hunt one another through.

My question is whether this works with Halo gameplay. Can I make a map where I hunt people around trees, or does that just devolve into a shotgun merry-go-round?

You can't place trees... they said the tree physics would have meant cutting a bunch of the structure objects.

You could make a Forerunner forest of metal, though.

It could work, depends on how you space everything out.

edit: it looks like Halo Waypoint put their version of the demonstration up. They have a steady camera and direct feed of the podium mic, I'll replace the videos in the OP with the official ones once they have the entire presentation uploaded.

I do hope you can turn gravity up high enough in Reach to disable jumping. It was unfortunate that at the highest gravity, you could still jump on smaller blocks. It messed with my Goldeneye inspired "License to Kill" mode.

This reminds me of when Quake 2 came out. I found a lot of levels for it including some remakes of E1M1 from Doom. However most of them were straight remakes while one was really well done and made use of the fact that the player now has the ability to jump and changed the map a bit accordingly (Security armor room? He stacked some crates outside so you could jump through the windows and still be able to get back in. Courtyard windows looking at the plasma gun? Made them too small for the player to pass through.)
I think anyone porting some maps from other FPSs should think like that.

When I remade Facility from Goldeneye, I pretty much thought "what if this map had been made for Halo". The literal version of Facility would be not too fun for playing in Halo.

Well, what's odd about Goldeneye maps is that they are all made for 4 people specifically. I'm pretty sure they each have a total of 4 spawn points. This doesn't translate to halo at all.

You can actually reduce the spawn points to how many GE had on a map (I think Facility has 6-7) and it'll work.

    In splitscreen.

The one thing I'm worried about is that all the maps on Forge World will feel samey, what with all the items being the same theme and so on.

Unless FX orbs actually produce a realistic nighttime etc enviroment, or something.

Is the troop warthog in this? I know that all military vehicles made it in, but I have no idea if the TW counts as one.

Nope, no troop hog. Unknown if it's anywhere in Reach.

For Forge World, they put in the minimum vehicles without behind redundant because of memory limits and how much FW is pushing the 360 already.

I mean think about it. All this? Works in four player splitscreen.

edit: it will help that we can colorize the structure pieces though. But these map editors usually have to sacrifice visual uniqueness per map for geometry/object selection instead. Far Cry is pretty much "grassland" or "grassland with trees".

The only game that got you visual differences was Timesplitters, but they also had the benefit of the tile based setup, meaning they could load in the unique appearance per map

Yeah, there were a couple that were built in the Crypt of Sandbox. The geometry was the same but visual left a little to be desired.

It's more of an improvement to the existing formula. Forge 1.0 was cool, but a tad limiting unless you were really patient.

And while you can't alter the terrain, there's plenty of other stuff you can do.

And too be far, it wasn't really until Pariah and FarCry 1 (on Xbox at least) where you could mod terrain in addition to adding structures. Now that I think about it, I haven't really heard of one since either...

These tools should make the other maps far more forgable, too.

Forge 2 is exciting because it's so easy, and now even a poor forger like me can recreate some of the coolest maps from Halo 3. It was easy to look at a map and imagine the possibilities, but actually building it was ridiculously tedious. Now, it's all just about how creative you are, not how much time you have to glitch the game.

With the size of Forge World, I wonder if some sort of Treasure Hunting-style game could be made. Like one tiny hill, with no waypoint, hidden somewhere on the map. And have like four teams of two zooming around with unlimited jet pack looking for it. Or maybe not a hill, but it could be a stockpile game with one flag and no waypoint? Eeee!

I suppose it would need so many possible locations for the treasure. . . but oh, if it's possible.

A King of the Hill like that might be fun, but only if it's Crazy King (Hill moves) after about 15 or so seconds of scoring. Unless, the challenge is just finding the damn thing and not holding it.

Also, did I mention that when I showed the ViDoc to both my friend and roommate on separate occasions, both of their jaws dropped when the saw the Hill = Hog section?
