I found In Utter Darkness to be incredibly boring, for what it's worth.
On normal it's boring.
Gets interesting above that though.
So very boring on normal.
I was expecting this incredibly tense and continuous struggle against unending waves of Zerg and all I got were single groups attacking me one by one for like 20 minutes
I finally started playing last night, and I just feel the need to make a PSA:
If you haven't played RTS in a long time, or aren't very good at them generally, or didn't play the original hardly at all, or weren't sure if this was "for" you, or any or all of the above, worry not. This game is accessable while being satisfying, and a ton of fun. People can bitch about the lack of innovation, but the result is that this is easier to play than WCIII, and every bit as much of a joy.
That is all.

Well, don't play on Normal.
We really do need that disclaimer on the front page or thread title that says "Hard = Normal, don't play Normal"
I played the whole campaign through on Casual the first time so I could finish it in a night and get the story in me.
Now I'm playing it on Brutal and its like a whole other game.

The only reason that I'd not consider doing that is the variance of skill levels. Bronze level players here might find normal = hard and hard = impossible. It's all dependent on player skill.

I played through the campaign on normal just because I hadn't played a real base-building RTS in a couple of years (and quite a while for Starcraft 1). The only times I needed to restart a mission was due to achievements (I'm looking at you, achievement for the side objective in the secret mission).
I figure after I'm done getting the achievements that can be done on normal (see my previous post), I'll replay it on Hard difficulty.

im bronze but started at hard because I have some sc1 experience (mucho money 3v3 AT and UMS ) but I know the units and structures, followed SC2 development, understand BOs etc. there are many SC fans or complete neophytes who don't even know that.
that said, hard for me is actually hard.. missions often take 40+ min and often two or three tries till i get the trick: (mass diamondbacks for the train mission, mass vikings for the purifier mission, spam mindblast for the tosh missions, repair the Odin with SCVs for that mission etc.)
I'm tempted to drop down to normal or casual just to get the story in me. I'd love to be able to take it slow and do a mission a day but I need the story now! and the time investment to reward ratio for SP is really low since I can play 4 exciting MP matches in the time it takes to do one long ass SP mission which annoys me when I miss an achievement or lose and have to restart.

No, Normal really is way too easy. Normal is for people who have never played StarCraft before. Hard felt closer to the difficulty of the first game.
Honestly though, there is nothing wrong with playing it on Normal. Just don't complain that the game is too easy/boring if you are :P
Firstly, I'm on the final Findlay, Zeratul, and Horner missions (Supernova, In Utter Darkness, and Media Blitz), is there a specific mission that I should finish first? I'm maxed out on Zerg research (Shrike Turret, Planetary Fortress, Hercules, Specialist Training, Psi Disruptor), and still need a few more research points for Protoss (Vanadium Plating, Orbital Depots, Automated Refinery, Science Vessel)
I'm finding Supernova to be incredibly difficult, do you have any good tips? And I don't think I'd bother with "In Utter Darkness", until Ive completed the other two. I'm trying to complete the campaign on "Brutal" difficulty.
And secondly, do I have to complete all campaign missions (including the choices) to be eligible for the campaign completion achievements?

yes you have to go back and do all the choices on brutal and the secret mission, so all 29 of them.
Has anyone played a Custom map called "Vexal's Tower Defense"? It is an 8-player affair that I found to be LOADS of fun if you have at least one or two competent people per lane.
Never has a tower defense game gotten me so involved with all my teammates. Are there others like this?

So I beat The Lost Viking (+ all the high score achievements) last night. So yay, never have to play that again! It's actually not that hard once you figure a couple things out (though it could help that I am somehow naturally pretty good at dodging bullets :P). Level 2 (zerg level) can go to god damn hell though. Every Scourge you kill turns into a stream of bullets, and there are frequently huge waves of them that come out at once.
Some tips if anyone wants them:
-Use the arrow keys, not WASD. It works better.
-Quickly tap the spacebar, don't hold it down. You fire twice as fast and it makes a HUGE difference. Seriously, I can't stress enough how much easier this actually makes the game (especially for the bosses that have insane amounts of HP).
-Use the Spread Missiles (orange powerup) and never pick up the Beam one (purple powerup). You can get two powerups before it doesn't actually do anything to pick up anymore.
-Make sure you get two of the little orbs that follow you (red powerup). They fire as well and seem to have a homing attack that will even hit enemies on the side of you. Two of these guys with full weapon powerups fills the screen with bullets, it's great!
-A very important tip for the powerups - if you wait 5-10 seconds they will switch to a different powerup in this order: orange (spread attack) -> red (orbs) -> purple (beam attack) -> blue (bomb) -> orange. You want to have two orange and two red at all times, then I recommend letting the rest turn into bombs.
-Use bombs to clear the screen of bullets you can't dodge. This is probably the best use for them. I really recommend you save a bunch for the zerg level because that one sucks.
Otherwise, a lot of it is just bullet dodging. Knowing how to manipulate the powerups though makes a huge difference and makes everything a lot easier. BTW, to get the high score achievement (500,000 points) I had to beat the game three times in a row (there are three levels, once you beat Terra-tron the game starts over and gets "harder" - but not really by much...)
I'm trying to get 50 kills with a penetrator round when the 4 nydus spawn a ton of tiny critters, but I can't seem to channel them properly, I've tried the little cave and the bridge but I just can't line them up for enough kills, any pointers?

This one is so stupid. Here's what I recommend. There is a part, I think it's in the second cave. You'll be on the far left side of the minimap (towards the beginning of this cave), heading down, then make a sharp right and there is a room filled to the brim with infested terrans (and one Infestor). You'll know when you're close because there will be a huge red blob on your minimap from the sheer number of guys in that room. There's kind of a narrow tunnel here leading into that room, and once you get close enough they'll come at you and start filtering into it. Save just before this spot, move everyone but Raynor a decent distance away (don't want Tycus stealing your kills!), and have Raynor "aggro" them. Pull back so they get bunched up and fill the hallway, then fire. If you don't get it, reload and try again. The achievement is dumb because it's purely a luck thing - it's hard to actually manipulate properly.
I'm still waiting for an RTS that involves more actual strategic, macromanaging gameplay rather than the usual "click-faster-than-the-other-guy micromanagement with rock-paper-scissors" style gameplay.

What you just described is not Starcraft 2, anyways there are plenty of RTS games like that.

This is what I pretty much do in every game with a great story, I always go normal. No matter HOW easy normal is for me, I never go above it my first play through. Don't get me wrong, I like a challenge and all, but when I'm invested in the tale, dying sucks me right the hell out of the moment.
Of course my 2nd play-through is on a harder setting.
But jesus, Starcraft 2's normal difficulty is a joke. Didn't come close to losing ever.

Tychus would be in a position to take a shot at a mortal Kerrigan? Did he even know the artifacts existed, or what they did? How would he know Raynor would set out on a quest to retrieve them? That was orchestrated by Valerian, whose decision to do so and enlist Raynor was explicitly a surprise to Mengsk.
Even if he knew what they did, why would he rely on his mortal enemy Raynor to get into a position to actually threaten Kerrigan, when he had the whole Dominion fleet at his disposal? Even at that, how would he know Raynor was going to go back on his sworn promise to kill her, which Mengsk witnessed firsthand back in Brood War? Even if he made all those decisions he couldn't or wouldn't possibly make, how did he arrive at the plan to send a single marine of dubious loyalty to shoot her, instead of, I don't know, planting a nuclear bomb in his suit, or orbitally bombarding his location?

Duran did it
I mean Dr. Nurad, working with moebius directly under (but really over) Mengsk. Though, Nurad's more hopeful goal for Tychus was having him convince Raynor to kill Kerrigan, so as to ensure the reality faced in the last protoss mission.

You know that, or far more simply that Mensgk sent Tychus in simply so that he'd have someone close to Raynor. Then with ongoing communication be up to date, and be able to give orders like killing kerrigan.

This is exactly the same reason I chose the eradicate option. I needed that juicy, juicy Protoss research.
I am loving Brutal so much because it really tests my abilities. It also makes it harder to get Zerg/Protoss research, which makes each little piece feel more earned.

Same here, there's too many zerg research levels and not enough protoss, at least in the beginning anyway. The protoss research seems more useful though, so I guess it balances out.
I wish I had done the crystal missions earlier, lots of easy protoss research in there to help with the more difficult brutal maps. none of the toss missions benefit from credits/research and are pretty easy.
The trick is to always have two point defence drones up and try to make sure only they are killing the scourge since then the green blobs will always be fired around your position instead of directly at you which is what happens when you tag them with your main gun which should always be double plasma.
