just saw this for the first time. thought it was brilliant. i think the movie did an exceptional job at showing the depravity of the mob

and the actions of BD and HG to mentally prepare for full on confrontation. The hostage scene was the perfect illustration that it wasn't about the violence it was about being able to do what they "had" to.
Also, Kick Ass confesses and suffers in what way is possible before there is "redemption". I think you have to give the story the fact that you have a limited time to show transitions and i felt it was believable.
I hated this movie. Hated it. I'm not the sort of person to be squicky, but this movie occasionally made me wince and not in a way that I found pleasurable. I think it had to do with the tone of the movie's violence: Whatching Big Daddy and Hit Girl be worse people than the gangster they were going after kinda removes any morale pretext the movie has. And it isn't like our main character is any better, proving that the best way to get into a girl's heart is to betray her and lie about who you are. If this movie wanted to be lighthearted fine, it could be redic violent, but probably should stick to PG13. When you're an R, and a hard R at that, for violence...then the humor and tone make the action disturbing rather than entertaining. If it was trying to be a satire, it's a failure. If it wasn't then it's just kind of icky.
The main character "isn't any better" than two homicidal maniacs racking up massive body counts because he pretended to be gay to get closer to his high-school crush?
'Um... ok.... a terrible terrible assessment you got there. You dislike the movie fine. You hate it because it's gory fine. But you got some very odd points there that are more wtf than understandable.

I didn't mean to say he was on the same level, but it did rub me the wrong way. I feel that maybe without that it would have even improved my judgement of the movie. And gore doesn't bother me, but the way it's presented does. Watching the splurt of blood as hit girl operates a crusher on a guy trapped helplessly in a car doesn't add to the scene, it makes it disgusting.
And I disagree with the idea that they should disturb me. The movie never portrays them in a negative light. It glorifies them.
I went into this movie expecting a different kind of superhero movie. instead I got a gratuitously violent one that ends happily, with no real probing done.
the best way to describe kick ass is pornographic. everything about that movie is pornographic, and I don't mean in the same way actual pornos are pornographic. the violence is so fetishized that it's really hard to think of the movie as anything but an adolescent thrill ride taken to absurd extremes. this is both a good and a bad thing. the film takes you to a rare place that you perhaps did not want to go. those that do enjoy the glorified violence of the film at base value should have, at least at some point, contemplated how absolutely fucked up the film is and what it says about them that they enjoyed it so much. at the same time, the vulgar and immature nature of the movie does keep it from being little more than a shallow experiment without any clear messages or inherent themes.

Kick-Ass can't even begin to muscle that movie off its turf.
I think the one scene in this movie that made me wince was when Hit Girl killed the stripper chick in the red dress when she was trying to run. That felt a bit unnecessary because she didn't really do anything to deserve it.
Then again I think it was the primal male inside of me screaming "NO NOT THE TITTIES GOD DAMMIT"
Yeah I think this movie is quite awesome as well. The only part I was not a huge fan of is
the first person night vision. I think it is starting to grow on me the second time around but I think it could have maybe been done better. A small complaint since that rescue scene is probably my favorite in the whole movie. Nic Cage on fire screaming something I can't understand as Hit Girl capped everyone was pretty awesome.
The violence in this isn't really as bad as everyone claims
And I haven't even seen Crank 2 to compare it against

I just felt there was not one sympathetic character in the whole thing. I didn't enjoy the movie.
Also, I had a discussion with my parents about the end. They said that the terrible digital effects was on purpose, I said that up to that point, the visuals were kinda the point of the movie, so having them shit at the ending was unintentional, and it was horrible either way.
I wanted to like this movie - and it definitely had me going for about the first third, but then became incredibly dull. The only thing that separated it from generic over-done comic violence was the fact that a little girl was on the giving end of it, and that never struck me as anything but a gimmick. (Particularly when she is just sort of forcing out some curse words for the Red Band trailer to show off. It WAS a gimmick, and was marketed in a way to directly exploit this. Which is not egregious in itself, but doesn't add anything to it.) I don't even have a problem with hyper-violence done well - I really liked Sin City and 300 was fun, but this just brought nothing to the table.
What I did like was the realism the movie had going at the start with Kick-Ass himself, though that too became pretty weak with the YouTube substory and Mintz-Plasse's character. Someone mentioned that this movie really makes the mob a hateful antagonist group, but they really were just cardboard [insert villains here]. The only thing new about this movie was the weakest part of it, otherwise it was color-by-numbers action trash.

I liked Kick-Ass
it was a great movie, but again not as good as I'd hoped
it really went in a different direction, and I'd hoped it would focus more on Kick-ass actually being somewhat decent
The lead is a good guy, although a bit nasally and grating at times when he wasn't being Kick-ass
i hated Chris' character and red Mist. It really seemed like they didn't know whether to make him the prodigal evil son or the empathetic hesitant bad guy
Big daddy and hit girl were fine, I'm not a dainty flower so I didn't mind the violence. It wasn't even very VIOLENT. Sure violence happens, but it's comic violence. None of it was uncomfortable unless that's what they were going for. None of it was drawn out whatsoever.
All fight scenes were great
and they look like they're setting up for a sequel, which i really hope they do well. They can expand on hit-girl and Kick-ass being a good team. If they drop the violence down?

I rather enjoyed the comic. Certainly a couple of plot points wrapped up much better.
Kick-Ass not getting the girl, and the Red Mist betrayal being an actual surprise being chief examples of what the comic handled better. Still not sure if I like BD & HG's origin from the movie or the comic better though.
i felt the comic was way way way too high on itself. the movie at least seemed to accept the fact that it was an escapist fantasy. The comic teetered between pretending it was realistic and needlessly shitting on the main character for absolutely no good reason. The movie is at least up front about it being a complete farce, which is why I think the fact that he gets the girl isn't that offensive. The comic in contrast tries to convince you that an 80 pound girl is a crackshot and that it's somehow real to life because, oh look, dave's life sux so bad.
