Interesting news for those who plan to purchase a copy of BlackOps for the PC:
After Call of Duty: World at War, we set out 3 goals for our next PC title:

* 1] PC gets every single game feature that the consoles get, but in a way that makes sense for PC.
* 2] PC gets even more features – the ones that PC gamers want like dedicated servers and more customization.
* 3] Keep it fun. Protect the integrity of the title through design and post-launch support.

Keep that in mind as you read through the decisions outlined below in our FAQ.

Call of Duty: Black Ops PC Multiplayer FAQ

Full feature support: Confirmed
Ranked Servers: earn XP and currency. Wager Servers: gamble your currency. Customizable Unranked Servers. Combat Training against practice dummies. Theater. Create-a-Class "2.0." Contracts. Emblem editor. Everything the consoles get. Implemented in a way that makes sense for PC (*cough* no lobbies *cough*).

PC Features: Confirmed
Dedicated Servers. New Server Browser. Dev console. /record. Customizable game modes, perks, killstreaks, classes, and higher player counts on unranked servers. Map rotation. RCon. Kick & Ban. MOTD. In-game custom Server Banners. And more.

Mod Tools: Confirmed
We will release mod tools sometime post-launch. We need to finish the game first. Then we will make sure any urgent issues are handled. Then we will begin work on tools. The extent of the mod tools package will not be known until this time.

Global Persistent Stats, Profiles: Confirmed
Your profile data is stored on servers for you and is accessible from anywhere on the internet. Stats, XP, COD Points, configs, etc.

Leaderboards: Confirmed
Yes, leaderboards - globally persistent leaderboards (i.e. NOT per-server based).

Steam Exclusive: Confirmed
Millions of Call of Duty fans are already on Steam. Their Friends are on Steam. Steam will provide the ease of auto-updating instead of manual patching. Auto-updating will also help keep the community playing together on the latest version. The Steam cloud will make your profile and configs available to you on any computer.

VAC: Confirmed
We are serious about protecting the integrity of this game from hackers and cheaters who would otherwise ruin the fun for the honest players. Used in conjunction with our own anti-exploit measures, Theater reviews, trusted servers, and supplemented by server admins with kick and ban powers we believe that Valve Anti-Cheat will be an effective solution for Call of Duty: Black Ops PC. We are committed to working closely and diligently with Valve to deal with new threats as they appear.

No “Public Server Files”: Confirmed
Many of these game features are predicated on having a trusted host or server. Otherwise these features would be wide-open to easy exploits and rampant cheating. Also, anti-cheat solutions can be significantly more effective on games that rely on trusted servers. We chose against “public server files” in favor of providing full feature support and protecting the integrity of this title. This doesn't mean you won't have customization or admin capabilities with your servers - because you will. This simply means we've partnered with an exclusive server provider.

GameServers.com Exclusive: Confirmed
We have partnered with GameServers.com as the exclusive provider of dedicated servers for Call of Duty: Black Ops. Every dedicated server for this title will be running on top quality hardware and infrastructure with excellent bandwidth. There will be a ton of official servers at launch for everyone to play on for free. If you want to run your own server you will be able to rent one at a great price (which will never go higher than $0.99/slot). They are actively adding new server locations and staffing up to meet global demand. If you don’t see your location you can suggest it here: http://www.gameservers.com/blackops/

Max Players: Not Confirmed
We have not yet finalized the maximum number of players in ranked or unranked servers. More playtesting is required to determine how high these numbers can go. This happens as late as possible in the project otherwise the game is likely to change in ways that could invalidate the results.

Minimum System Requirements: Not Confirmed
The game is still in development, and the PC team is hard at work making further optimizations. We will announce the min specs in the near future.

Hopefully that answers the majority of the outstanding questions not answered from our MP Reveal coverage. There are still some questions we do not have answers for at this time, so as always, we appreciate your patience. We will have all questions answered before November 9th.

Regards,
-JD, PC Dev, & the PC Team

Prestige and Hardened Editions announced! Won't somebody please think of the children?

68050.jpg

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/102746-Activision-Unveils-Black-Ops-Collector-Editions
Activision has unveiled the Hardened and Prestige edition of the upcoming Call of Duty: Black Ops and as expected, they are equal parts cool and expensive.

You all probably remember the Prestige Edition of last year's Modern Warfare 2 but here's a little reminder, just in case: night vision goggles. The over-the-top Mewtwo collector's edition came with an equally over-the-top price tag of 150 bucks, but it was enough of a hit with hardcore fans that Activision has decided to do the same thing with Black Ops.

Behold! The Hardened Edition of Black Ops includes a custom, limited edition Black Ops medal, a Black Ops avatar outfit, four exclusive co-op multiplayer maps and a premium SteelBook case. It seems nice.

For the real collector, though, there's the Prestige Edition, and this is where we separate the men from the boys. Along with all the goodies included in the Hardened Edition, the Call of Duty: Black Ops Prestige Edition also comes with an RC-XD Video Surveillance Vehicle, modeled after the in-game RC-XD Killstreak reward. It's a fully-functional radio-controlled vehicle with 200 foot range, digital proportional steering and throttle, independent suspension, a display stand and built-in video camera and microphone that will transmit audio and color video to the pistol-grip remote, which is equipped with a speaker and two-inch backlit color screen with 220x176 resolution.

This kind of gaming goodness doesn't come cheap: The Black Ops Hardened Edition carries a price tag of $79.99, 20 bucks more than the regular release, while the Prestige Edition will set you back $149.99. It's a bit rich for my blood, but that doesn't really matter because, just like Modern Warfare 2, these special editions are only being released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Sorry, PC gamers, no radio-controlled surveillance vehicle for you!

Call of Duty: Black Ops is set for release on November 9 for the PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Nintendo Wii

Modern Warfare 3 probably won't happen/be any good

Because Infinity Ward has fucking imploded on itself and unless the newly-created (and independent) Respawn Entertainment manage to get the licence back, it'll either not get used or be used to make a sub-par title. Sad.
Infinity Ward and Activision go through a messy divorce

Activision sued for up to $125 million by current, former Infinity Ward employees

Activision's Call of Duty-related headaches just leveled up.

More than three dozen former and current employees of Infinity Ward, the Encino-based development studio that made the hugely successful Call of Duty: Modern Warfare video games for Activision Blizzard Inc., have sued the publisher claiming that they are owed between $75 million and $125 million in unpaid royalties and potentially more in compensatory damages.

...

Of the 38 employees involved in the lawsuit, 21 are former employees of Infinity Ward; 17 still work there. Approximately 95 people worked at Infinity Ward on last November's Modern Warfare 2, meaning that about 40% of its employees at that time are now suing Activision.

...

The lawsuit says that Activision owes Infinity Ward employees a bonus pool of at least $118 million, of which $82 million is supposed to go to employees other than West and Zampella.

It alleges that the publisher has withheld royalty payments in order to keep them from leaving as their former bosses did, putting at risk the potentially hugely lucrative release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 planned for late 2011.

"Activision engaged in this inappropriate course of conduct in an attempt to force employees of Infinity Ward to continue to work at a job that many of them did not want just so Activision could force them to complete the development, production and delivery of Modern Warfare 3," the suit says.
It goes on to allege that Activision representatives told Infinity Ward employees that if West and Zampella had not been fired, the employees would have received bonuses approximately 2.5 times higher than what they were paid on March 26.

An Activision spokeswoman said she was not aware of the lawsuit and could not immediately comment.

The complaint filed Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court in Santa Monica is based in part on the same allegations contained in West and Zampella's suit. Isaacs has asked that the two cases be consolidated.

http://www.kotaku.com.au/2010/04/ousted-modern-warfare-2-creators-respawn-sign-with-ea/
By Stephen Totilo on April 12, 2010 at 11:30 PM

The drama involving the creators of the biggest franchise in gaming continues as Jason West and Vince Zampella, the fired former lead creators of Modern Warfare 2, have formed a new company, Respawn Entertainment. EA, their formal rival, is backing.

The Monday morning news announcing the new company follows a Friday that saw Activision, the mega-publisher that fired Jason West and Vince Zampella from their leadership positions at Modern Warfare development studio Infinity Ward, suing the ousted creators for “misdeeds.” West and Zampella had sued Activison a month prior.

But today the two creators are announcing a new company and an exclusive publishing deal with Activision rival Electronic Arts.

“Respawn Entertainment marks a fresh start for Jason and me,” Zampella said in a statement. “For the past decade we led a great development team and poured our hearts into creating an epic game franchise. We’re very proud of what we built – and proud that so many millions of fans enjoyed those games. Today we hope to do it all over again — open a new studio, hire a great team, and create brand new games with a new partner, EA.”

“We’re excited,” West said. “Now that the team is in control of the games and brands, we can ensure that the fans are treated as well as they deserve.”

While West and Zampella’s experience has recently involved military first-person shooters, including EA’s Medal of honour series, which they worked on prior to handling Call of Duty and Modern Warfare for Activision, they offered no details on the new game.

The release indicated only that “the company will focus on creating state-of-the-art gaming experiences for global audiences.”

Kotaku will have more on this story as it breaks.
Holographic Sight Known Effects, Other Glitches/Notes Too.

-M16A4's recoil significantly decreased while equipped.

[STRIKE]-SPAS-12's spread of shot tightened up, creating a longer 1-shot-kill range.[/STRIKE]

-FAL's damage increased from 55-35 to 55-40 while using the sight, which then allows 2 shot kills at any range (using Stopping Power) even with a silencer.

-MG4, M240, and the M9 do not benefit from equipping a Silencer. That is to say, when firing these weapons while silenced, you will still appear on the radar when you fire.

Everybody sending one invite is far more convenient then me sending every invite.

There's also PA CoD4, which is an older account with a lot of names on it, I think it was being run by I King Kong I. It probably isn't being maintained anymore, FYI.

    Ask and you shall receive:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DB3hRfw72Zw

Oh man. Halfway through the game and I'm in first place on my team at 7/0/12 with only 510 points.

Also, Holi you're cool for posting the video, but a douche for OMA/DC'ing me! I kept track and I think you won 8-4. I have to go back through when I'm not at work and actually listen to the chat. Maybe I'll hear Mercy swear at me. Makes all three of those games totally worth it! :P

@Seventh: I prestiged even though I didn't really want to, just so I have something to do in game. I doubt I'll finish this one.

You'll notice that I pulled out my tube after the match being 1/2 over, to combat the campers in the loft above A and the other people who were tubing me. The Scrapyard match before that, I was using RPGs which I just unlocked.

I'll fight fire with fire any day. You'll also notice we all had 3 bars and my bullets weren't doing shit. lol.

O_o Yes, yes you are. That's crazy talk, Dreidel. I'd be all "HEADSH... SHIT I HIT HIS FEET!"

This is my first COD game. It took me a long time to realize a few things I'd been doing wrong for a while.

a - I was using iron sights wrong
b - I didn't realize you had to turn on blast shield (thought it was passive)
c - Took me probably 100 matches before I figured out you could change classes mid-game

I'm sure there are plenty more. So I just wanted to make sure it's not some crazy handicap I've been playing with. (read: I need excuses for why I suck.)

I used to play Halo inverted, but when I moved to MW I just stayed with the default settings. I recently changed to "tactical" (ugh) for the droopshoots.

I've switched between inverted and un-inverted like 10 times since Halo (the first) came out. Cause I'd just play as one of the premade dudes and half the time I'd grab the wrong one and it'd fuck with me for about half the match, then I'd grow accostomed to it and it would be the new normal for me. Then next time I'd play I'd just pick a random guy and he'd be the opposite.

Switching doesn't take too long to figure out.

    Let's talk about today's experience with MW2...

After fussing around trying to get myself and two others into a match for about 10 minutes, we finally get merged into a game that just ended. So, pre-game lobby. Then the lobby closes, so we try again. We get into a match with 4 guys who are running CB Pro and Ninja Pro and after getting a small lead, proceed to hide for the rest of the match. That was a lot of fun, let me tell you. Then, we leave that lobby, because fuck that, and we finally get into a domination match which we are winning pretty handily, until the host rage-quits. New host found... new host rage-quits. New host found... laggiest fucking host I've ever played with. Lost connection, game lobby closes, XBOX gets turned off.

Yeah. If I can get a couple others on as well. I play pretty much every night, but I can't play with pubs anymore, and playing with half a team or less tends to be just as miserable.

I'll get on at 7. didn't want to ignore you, but no one was on earlier so I played MNC and we had a full team and then I got stuck on the opposite team and got to enjoy that game from the other side of a PA beating.

It wasn't as funny as the MW2 one. Entropy Hat can eat dick off the hot barrel of my firebase turret.

Yeah, sorry about earlier. I was playing whilst my brother was on the net so I'd just get lag spikes for a few seconds when he changed page but then he decided that one in the morning was the perfect time to start watching BBC iplayer and then it just becomes impossible. I did explain it during the Highrise game but I don't know if it was actually going through or not.

Thet favella game against the hiders was completely fucking ridiculous though. Six minutes into the game and one of them was 0 : 0 : 0.

I hate inverted controls, I always hated when I got stuck with somebody elses profile on Halo with the inverted controls. It messes with me on flight simulators as well, but I understand why you'd want it that way with a flight simulator, but not a shooter.

I used to go with inverted controls, but with 3 brothers, and each of us once liking different control schemes, it went away. The only thing that remains from my older control schemes are the higher sensitivity. For some reason, most people I know like turning like they are in molasses.

There's something really satisfying in saying good riddance to prestiging and instead building up all the weapon attachments. No more do I say "I wish I had Extended Clips for the PP2k". No more do I avoid unlocking this or that weapon because I'd just prestige again before I got to enjoy the FMJ. Instead I just pull out my ExClips PP, or work on unlocking X for the Y, knowing it will be there forever.

Used the Spas with the recommended loadout today and really started to see the power of it. Had a pretty good game of Barebones HQ, getting may kills to to fewer deaths, whatever it was.

Couldn't tell off hand, but do I rack a new round faster with Sleight of Hand, or does it just help with the actual reloading?

No. IF SoH did that then the SPAS and 1887s would be OP. Oh wait...

The best SPAS loadout is silenced w/ SP. My friends call that gun The Squeaker. It rains silent death on your foes.

I don't understand how you guys find DC as annoying as burst rifles.

At least when the tuber misses the first shot you've got enough time to kill him four times over before he can fire again.
FAMAS/M16 guy just pulls the trigger again =(

Edit: I'd also (mildly) argue that outside of mortaring the poor people who keep running past the humvee on Afghan, hitting someone with a 203 takes (ever so slightly) more skill than the point and click adventure that is burst fire.

When I am playing, the DC tuber rarely needs a second shot, as they have an area scoped and its death when you walk into it. There are door ways beyond count that can be ever so well camped by a tuber.

The burst guns at the very least need to track you a little bit to get a kill, generally.

For my tastes, I NEVER get upset by getting shot by any gun, as it seems that's the way the game should be played, balanced or not doesn't bother me. Its the tubing/knifing that get me, as they don't seem to be in the spirit of the game.

On another note, I am torn on prestiging again. I have a bunch of weapons totally unlocked. I have Pro perks for most. But, I hate watching XP go to waste. It will kill me to unlock stuff while at max level, knowing that the XP could have been upping my levels and such. BUT, if you don't prestige right away, you almost should never prestige again, as you would then have to go get the weapons totally unlocked all over again. Argh.

Ah, the quandaries of a min/max nerd...

Good games last night. Everyone's comments were cracking me up. I only need 4 more AC-130s until I can change killstreaks, 5-7-11 may be one of the most effective, but it gets a little boring after a while.

I had to laugh at the terrible team we played last night in demolition. Someone asked them if they knew what gametype they were playing and one of the responded, "Team death match, I don't need the wins" o_O

I know people do it, but I was surprised he admitted it that easily. I wish someone had been recording the demo game on crash when the entire other team quite halfway through, we were 3 seconds from the forfeit & an entirely new team gets put in our game and they nearly won. We were all screwing around until we realized that we might lose. One guy on the other team was in the game for 1/2 a demolition round & had 44 kills.

I've come to the conclusion that I just hate using iron sights. Any of them. Sure, there are some that are alot better than others. But I just need to use an optics attachment in order to enjoy playing this game. I'm mastering the LSW, and those irons made me want to jam something in my pee whole. I finally open up the RDS and it's like it's a totally different gun. I bling'd it with a silencer and I became a death machine.

In other news, I had probably the highest style-points kill I've ever gotten yesterday. I was playing on SubBase and I'm up on the rooftop directly across from the server room picking guys off. Someone tries to come after me via the catwalk immediately to my left. I saw him coming and we exchanged some fire, but I was at the end of my clip so instead of reloading I jump over him and the catwalk and knife him on my way to the ground.
