OK based on this thread I've thought up some simple ground rules for designing a flag
-It should be simple. You don't have a lot of space to work with, and people will be looking at it quickly, from a distance, so anything complex just gets lost.
-don't put actual pictures of things on there. Symbols are fine, but pictures just end up looking like cheesy powerpoint clip art. Especially people.
-You don't need to have a symbol for every single thing in your state on the flag. Just pick 1 or 2, 3 tops.
-Don't put words. But if you must, use latin. For god's sake don't write the name of your state on the flag, that defeats the purpose of even having a flag.
-Don't try and combine several other flags into one superflag.
in other words, don't do this:
Milwaukee only got itself a flag because they noticed all the other big cities had one. That's a flag designed out of sheer oh-shit-we-need-a-flag panic.
Madison, meanwhile, did much better:
Mosinee, WI did not:

I have a new soccer blog The Minnow Tank. Reading it psychically kicks Sepp Blatter in the bean bag.
Phoenix is cool, Reno's flag sucks though the city emblem is ultra-modern.
Seriously. It looks like it belongs on the side of a spaceship.
Yeah, having seen it around all my life I didn't notice, but it is really a great flag/emblem. A great example of not fucking up the obvious. Considering how some of the other ones turned out, I'm glad it doesn't look like a big flaming Chicken with a toothy grin humping Camelback mountain and laying an egg with Phoenix Canal system hatching from it.

europe has a lot of tasteful, elegant flags for the most part
the rest of the world is gaudy by comparison
i guess because europe had a few thousand years to get the "ugly busy flag" thing out of their systems
I don't know
like half of them are like, three colored stripes and another third just have crosses
I mean (with the possible exception of the UK) the flags don't look bad
but they could be a little more zesty for all the dev time they got
they are kind of watered-down and focus-groupy
A lot of the European national flags, I think, are just the colors from the coat of arms. They have flags that incorporate the CoA also, but they're used on a more local level.
European flags are easily recognisable, especialy from a distance. Which is... you know the purpose of flags.
Saying "here we are" and "come on then, if you think you are hard enough" to the world. European flags fufill that task with gusto.
Personally I like the Nordic Cross flag used by Nordic countries. Its like a theme across the region. Every country has the same type of flag, but you can tell them apart at a glance. The flags gives the message "we are different, but also alike".

The sky was full of stars, every star an exploding ship. One of ours.
As far as state flags go, Colorado's is pretty inoffensive—if this will even hotlink:
Now that I think about it, it's got a bit of a pac-man vibe going on.

Indeed. Simple is the way to go with flags. Once you put too much on it, it gets busy and messy and hard to make out.
What? No arrangement of the stars into the pyramid with the Illuminati eye?
I am disappoint.
I like the circle, but I think it needs some tweaking. It sort of clashes with the otherwise square-centric geometry, and it leaves some pretty glaring blank space on the blue square.

Bridgewater is one town over from me.
That's right. The Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Genie is gonna fuck up your castle.
In 1821 Brockton was all of these things. Not so much in 2010.
Seriously. It looks like it belongs on the side of a spaceship.

Leinster's is probably the only Irish flag I like.
Though I guess Connaught's is pretty cool too.
it's probably a golden fleece
So much that I spent $60 to hang this flag on the wall that my computer is up against. It was quite a hard find.

The United Kingdom has the best flag in Europe.
You can't go wrong with either of them.

Um, why does that bird have TWO Pieces of Eden?!?
Because try taking either of them away.
I bet battles between opposing sides of the same house got confusing

your state flags are bad
but your city flags are an atrocity
we use coat of arms for everything and damn, if it doesn't look much better:
That's municipal/city flags, and there are rules for that kind of shit. You can't just get the councillor's cousin to whip something up in ms paint
Even our church has an awesome coat of arms
the national coat of arms is pretty sweet though
but if that isn't gaudy enough we have the older version
yes there totally is another, smaller lion with an axe on top of that crown. One isn't enough.
And here's our royal coat of arms.
No, I don't know who those dudes are, but at least we've got a polar bear from Greenland.
europeans drove them to extinction sometime in the dark ages i think
