So apparently I have the option to reset my attribute points. I'm intending to be mainly drone/turrets. What's the best point distribution for that?
Download evemon, enter your character public API key, add all the skills you want to train and have it optimize for you.
I would recommend staying with a balanced set of attributes until you have the basic's high enough that you can get by. Stuff like Engineering/Electronics, Drones, Navigation all use different attributes. Once you have enough of the basics that you can use most if not all tech 2 mid and low slot mods, you can remap to something specific and spend a over a year training straight perception/willpower or memory/intelligence.
You can easily spend 400+ days training skills in gunnery/spaceship command or missiles/spaceship command and those all use perception/willpower. If you are planning to train a combat pilot I would train the minimum skills from spaceship command and gunnery/missiles to be somewhat useful until you have the support skills trained and wont be needing memory/intelligence/charisma anymore. At that point you can remap to max perception and the rest in willpower, will greatly reduce the time needed to get your gunnery and spaceship command where you want it.
Stuff I'd get before remaping for a combat pilot:
Basic fitting skills:
Drones 5
Scout Drone Operation 5
Cloaking 4
Electronics 5
Electronic Upgrades 4
Propulsion Jamming 4
Targeting 4
Signature Analysis 4
Long Range Targeting 4
Energy Grid Upgrades 4
Energy Management 4
Energy System Operations 4
Engineering 5
Shield Management 4 (if shield tanking)
Shield Operation 4 (if shield tanking)
Shield Compensation 4 (if shield tanking)
Shield Resistance skills 3/4 (if shield tanking)
Tactical Shield Manipulation 4 (if shield tanking)
Shield Upgrades 4
All Learning basics to 5 and advanced to 4 (this part sucks but sooo worth it in the long run, could finish this off once you can fly something almost useful)
Hull Upgrades 4 (5 if armor tanking)
Mechanic 4
Armor Resistance skills (if armor tanking)
Repair Systems 4 (if armor tanking)
Navigation 4
Afterburner 4
High Speed Maneuvering 4
Whatever from ship command/gunnery/missiles you need to be useful in the short term. I'd only train to battlecruisers before remaping and training straight weapons and ships.
Stuff you might as well get a few levels in (at least train to 2-3):
Combat Drone Operation
Specialty Drone skills
Drone Navigation/Durability/Sharpshooting/Interfacing
Acceleration Control
Fuel Conservation
Warp Drive Operation
If you are going Gallente train your drone skills way higher before remaping.
If you're going caldari train some of the ECM and ECM support skills higher (longer ECM range, etc)
Amar might want to train the skills that increase capacity and cap recharge to 5.
Minmatar might want higher navigation but probably don't need anything special.
The reason I recommend training these BEFORE your first remap is because you only get 1 remap per year and they do NOT carry over. The only time you will every have 2 remaps is on a new character when you've never used one before. From the time you use your last remap you have to wait 365 days before you can do it again. They are extremely valuable and when you start out it might seem like a good idea to remap memory/intelligence for 2 months to get all your needed mem/intel skills up then remap to something else. I assure you, later on you will be wishing you'd save those remaps to cut down a 280 day queue to 190 days instead of an 80 day queue to 65 days.
After you use up your first 2 remaps the best way to get skillpoints is to train a year of skills that all use the same primary/secondary attribute and max those out. It makes a huge difference. I started one of my accounts 4 months after the other 1 year ago. The newer character now has 2 million more SP than the original character because the original wasn't as focused.
tl;dr:
Remaping just to train drone skills up is a huge waste of a remap, you only get 1 new one every 365 days and that timer starts when you use your last remap. Use remaps wisely. When you are starting out you will need to train stuff from all different attributes, I'd recommend doing the basic fitting skills before remaping (see list above).
Get the skills you want into evemon and play with different attribute sets to see what works best.
Is there a need for freighter chars here? Because I do love hauling stuff in armored freighters... and I will probably need escorts
you love... hauling...?
that so just does not compute with me, even when i liked mining i still thought hauling was the biggest bitch in the bitch boat
of course i was hauling all the minerals for mining ops for the entire corp after they all logged for the night so putting an extra few hours in just made me spiteful
I despise mining, at least high-sec Veldspar and Scordite mining, the only good thing about it is you don't have to pay much attention. I've got a Badger with a mining laser II on it. I know it's not the most efficient way to mine, but I can get almost the same yield as with a full day of bantam mining, but I only have to fly the ship to the belt and start mining, and fly back to a station in an hour or two when it's done. None of the constant back and forth.

Regular freighters not so much.
Jump freighters and rorquals though, yes. Import/export from jita with a JF is always an important business, and doing logistics work with a rorq is big too. Both are pretty solo and alt intensive though fwiw. Spies and all that.

Once you do so, the proper communication channels and information that will get you on the right path will be available. We've pretty much got the most newbie friendly infrastructure you'll find in eve.
...as long as you can handle lots of buttes and donges.
Does this game get many new subscribers? I've always been curious about this since there's been a number of people who have been skill training in EVE since the beginning. I also just got an email offering the first month of subscription for 10 dollars. I'm curious if they're having any effect at bringing new people in.
There's around 1000 trial accounts logged on at any given time, so that's a fairly good indicator of the new people getting exposed to it. If only 1/10 of them subscribe, that's still a fair amount of new blood.
I admit, as a new subscriber, I'm a little daunted by the people who've played forever and have millions upon millions upon millions of skillpoints.
So I might need a little advice on how to deal with something involving my CD-Key.
I've put a petition about it on the EVE website, the problem itself being that when I go through the process of upgrading my trial account through Steam... it tells me that my CD-Key has already been used. Now how you upgrade on Steam is you right click EVE, go to manage account and it brings you to the website to a specific page. Through this you can choose to create a new account, or to upgrade an existing trial.
That's where the problem is, every single time I try to upgrade the trial account I got through a gracious fellow on these forums, it will tell me it's been used already. I'd first put the petition up on the EVE website, but after a few days I said fuck it and made one on the Steam support too. But now they're telling me it's not their issue, and that it needs to be directed towards CCP. I'm just curious if they are in any way right, considering I purchased the game from THEM, and received the CD-Key from Steam/Valve, not CCP.
This just pisses me off cause, I've built up the current character I have on this trial and wanted to upgrade this one. But perhaps because I received the trial from a referral and... wait no, scratch that cause people were getting themselves free months through that process.

Take in to account, the number of SP someone has at a certain point has pretty big diminishing returns in terms of what a character can do at any given time. It's great to have 90m SP and be able to fly a hundred ships with T2 weapons...but you can only fly one of them at a time. It just becomes versatility after a while, not so much direct increase in power.
So becoming competitive is not as daunting as it seems.

Man, this is one of the biggest misconceptions I wish could be dispelled for people interested in trying out the game.
That 90m sp dude who can fly any number of fully t2 fitted ships? Yeah, you can lock him down and make him incapable of shooting anything with a week of training. Or you can keep him from running way and lose his billion isk ship to a group of frigates a fraction of a cost.
Even if you'll never have as many sp as him, the way skills work, once you train one up to rank 5, that's as good as it ever gets.

This, also consider that in any fight, it all depends on circumstance. A 60mil SP character, like mine, in a BS, is totally fucked if a newbie in a rifter tackles him for a fleet. Effectively, that newbie killed him.
Also, building on that, ships are built for different ranges of combat. If I am set up for short range/high dps combat and go against a new player with a setup that can warp scramble me, hold me at range and slowly melt my ship, my 60mil SP mean exactly jack shit.
Eve is amazing in that way, a new character is just as dangerous as someone who has played for years.
*Wants his Drake but can't upgrade to get it* =(...
Your character/account is stored on the Eve servers, not through Steam. You should be able to just go to the eve website and pay for a subscription or plug in a time card code for your account. The only reason to go through Steam is if you are trying to make use of a sale deal there.

B-b-bingo!
I purchased a copy of EVE Online on Steam for $2 a few months back, hence why I'm trying to get the stupid geese to issue me a new CD Key. That and I don't really have the spare money to upgrade it otherwise.
Sold off all my assets except for a set of +3 Implants in Jita I'll never get to, a crap ton of Industrial Skillbooks in Masalle that's even further away than Jita, and a handful of skillbooks in the hold of my Punisher that I can't inject yet.
I'll make a list of the skillbooks and see if I can get replacements for them after I pod jump to Merchi space before I sell them. Otherwise I'll just station camp until I get them injected and then pod jump.

If you put all that stuff in Jita, it's really cheap to import to goon space w/ a jf service.
Also I can push butan on apps now, so hopefully the process will be a bit quicker now since it isn't just one dude handling all of them in addition to his other director type stuff going on. I'm also in charge of newbie packages to smooth the transition for clueless newbies out to goonspace.

When you bought the game on steam for $2 that was paying for a new account (you have to pay for every new account). When you used an invite you created a second new trial account and are now trying to upgrade it to a full account. The first account that you bought for $2 is already a full account.
In short, I don't think you can do what you are trying to do.
I just started yesterday. I'm going to spend some more time doing stuff before I app. I don't want to be entirely useless...
Is there a vent server? It would be supremely helpful to be able to just chat about things.
Just finish the tutorial(s), they're pretty good. Once you've done that, go ahead and app to merchi. There's no reason to linger in empire longer than necessary unless there's just stuff you want to do there.
We pretty much just use goon TS for coms, but if you're not in merchi obviously that's not an option. I might see if I can set up one of the free TS things for the newbies, it would help with training camp too since goon auth can be...iffy.

There's always a few of us online at that time, and there's plenty of Goon activity as well.
COnsidering I only played a month and a half before I canceled my account, I would say I qualify as a newbie. :>
