    The Netherlands practically is English-speaking.
We learn how to talk to retards from backwards countries where they don't learn other languages than their own, yes.
Well, I could speak French or Spanish to you, maybe even a little Latin or Japanese, but I have a feeling the English would probably be easier all around. :P

Je parle une petite peux Francais, ne hablo Español... Latin would be fun D: ololodeadlanguage. I can't make sentences in Japanese, but I can say hi/bye yes/no etc. :(

Ich spreche ein bietchen Deutsch, es ist gleich Niederlandisch. I can only say "yes" in Polish, because that's the only Polish they've ever said to me. I know some Czech, it's on the same level as Japanese.

But yeah, English is much better.

That's only 'cause Polish girls put out for everybody. Nothing to get a big head about. :P

Damn it Jeff, I actually wrote a post for that graphic novel thread.

    Whatever. I'll dump it here.

I don't really know, but I wish they would make public policy books as graphic novels. A lot of abstract ideas could be summed up more succictly with a picture than a two page description. Henry Kissenger's books would be awesome as graphic novels.

Not to mention that someone like Thomas Freidman who insists on making every single fucking point with a story anyway could condense his books from 400 pages to 50.

God, no fucking kidding. I swear, the man gets paid by the anecdote.

I just want to shake him and yell "Just tell me the information" in his smug, mustachioed face.

I think my years of classroom training in French prepared me much more for speaking and understanding spoken French.

Before going to Germany, all I really did was some internet reading on common words and grammar, and one of those learn-a-language audio CDs.

Classroom learning makes such a huge difference.

I had a year of French where I'd really paid attention before I went there for a month, and I kicked ass at it.

I got home from school at 3:00-ish, EST.
Since then, I've had two pieces of pizza, because I have to work from 4-9 tonight.

Certainly not in the tourist areas, though.

Speaking from personal experience, an American will have a much easier time at a McDonalds in Amsterdam then in Munich or Vienna.
