Most of my writing assignments in college had both minimum and maximum word limits.

We were doing it based on APA style, which emphasizes brevity because the goal is to teach you to write articles for scientific journals.

I only took Comp I before dropping out, so my teacher was happy when students were able to do a one page double spaced essay. I seriously saw her write on someone's paper once, "incapable to finish reading too many errors in grammar, spelling, and clear thoughts." Followed by giving them a D instead of a F

You set specific rules when people don't have the experience or good judgment to properly follow reasonable guidelines.

Which describes a lot of lower division college students.

800 is annoyingly small when you have something to say, though

but it's the perfect length when you have 90 minutes and have to bullshit your way through the whole thing

Certainly but a set specific one shouldn't exist. Basically what I'm saying is the essay is unable to make its point without getting "long winded" then it should be marked as such. But if there's a 2000 word limit and you wrote 2200 while still keeping it interesting and not wasting points or words then you shouldn't be penalized for the fact.

That probably makes less sense being read then it did in my mind.
I see and understand your point. The problem is that a majority of students are whiny bitches, and if you don't give them a word limit they get stressed and confused by the direction to "be concise".

God I ran through that so many times in school. If the topic and rules of a paper weren't clearly laid out, and the student was given the option they'd be lost.

It seems weird that Norway is the one being accused of having Finnish identity issues, considering most of Finland was owned by Sweden or Russia at one point or another, and current scholarly thinking has Finnish in a language group of its own along with Estonian and Hungarian.

I really need to figure out how I want to deal with next year. I'll have enough money to live for 12 months, plus I'll have unemployment if I can't find work right off. However, I really want to take a Technical Writing course - which eats up at least 5 months of living. And I have no idea what my time/commute situation will be next year. I can't possibly afford a car anytime soon, and I'm simply nowhere near brave enough to consider a motorized scooter or anything so I can't work around horrible bus commute times, and I don't even know which CITY my next job will be in. Also I'm not sure if my technical writing thing will really work out because 90% of the technical writing jobs around here are about programming and I absolutely fail at programming.

basically around the turn of the century we became independent and all and so we needed to figure out how to write

up until then we were writing danish

the cities (where educated rich people lived, educated in copenhagen) wanted danish, the farmers in the rest of the country wanted something more like what we spoke

some guy went around and recorded tons of dialects and made a written language based on that and some other guy norwegianized danish

to this day we haven't decided which one to use so we have both

and you have to learn both in school which is dumb
