Animation Thread

This thread is for all things animated. From old school:
ffopener.gif

To new school:

NewF4Cartoon.jpg

From Marvel:
xmen.jpg

To DC:
05.jpg

Over the years, we've seen animated re-imagings of our favorite comic book characters. Some have even sparked up heated debates about whether or not they are truly 'faithful' to their graphic counter-parts:

batposter.jpgxevolution.jpg

Others avoid this by creating an entirely new persona for an already established character. Sometimes these new characters are so good, that they should become a mainstay in their respective graphic universe:

60.jpg

Discuss everything you love/hate about the animated world of comic book characters.

Is The Batman a piece of crap?
Is X-Men: Evolution too X-treme?
Will there ever be an animated Image character?
Just how awesome is the DCAU compared to the Marvel AU?
Which Spider-Man series is the best?
Is Bruce Timm the best thing to happen to animation since Walt Disney?

Is The Batman a piece of crap? No. It's not great, but there are a lot of good ideas in that show that make it interesting enough to watch. It doesn't stack up to the Timmverse shows. But it's alright.
Is X-Men: Evolution too X-treme? X-Men Evolution is awesome.
Just how awesome is the DCAU compared to the Marvel AU? DC has pretty consistently kicked Marvel's ass in cartoons for awhile now.
Which Spider-Man series is the best? Spider-Man and his AMAZING FRIENDS!
Is Bruce Timm the best thing to happen to animation since Walt Disney? Yes.

The best Spider-Man series is the adjectiveless one from the 90s. With motherfucking Ed Asner.

Well, that makes me look like a fool. Either way though, badass. Should be worth looking into at least. I think Image could make a pretty cool Invincible cartoon. Tone down the violence a little bit, but otherwise I think it could be turned into a pretty cool animated series.

I was so expecting the new Fantastic Four cartoon to suck.
    I had a fit when I heard Doom's voice.
But try as I might to hate it, I couldn't.
It was just too much fun to watch.

And Sue Storm was totally hot in the show.

Should I be following the new FF show then?

I kind of liked the Marvel Action hour version from years ago... (though Hulk was better)

Also: there should be an Invincible cartoon. There fucking should.

Oh my god... animated Spawn was so badass... it was everything the movie should have been, but wasn't. Also... the Marvel AU is indeed lacking compared to the DCAU... because Marvel try's to keep their characters in their perspective boxes rather then letting them lose in a shared Universe.

X-Men Evolution was great, so was the 90's spidey and X-men. But that's because the last two weren't afraid to be about the comics... and the first was just neat, I guess.

I keep putting off the purchase of the Justice League DVDs. And the last volume of Batman: TAS. I should get on that.

Also, I think a certain movie deserves a big mention in this thread:

Batman: TAS is one of my favorite cartoons of all time.

I was furious when they changed the style to match the Superman cartoon.
They made Joker look less scary and I think the Scarecrow went through three character designs.
The show lost so much appeal for me after they did that.

Word up on that. I'm actually very slowly acquiring my animated series/movies. I just wish marvel would actually put x-men out. All you can get are crappy 'pirated' VCDs instead of official DVDs - its really quite annoying.

I'm of the opinion that Scarecrow's redesign was actually an improvement. If Joker's was less scary, then Scarecrow's was markedly more demented and creepy.

I never really understood Poison Ivy's redesign though. Like, was there some logical reason for her to become albino all of a sudden or was it just to move away from the old style? That's not to say I didn't like it, I just didn't understand it.

Return of the Joker is absolute shit in comparison to Mask of the Phantasm.

Anyone older than the age of 13 would probably be able to realize there is a gigantic gap between the two. Which isn't to say that Return of the Joker is bad, but it's like comparing a Big Mac to a perfect fillet mignon that's basted with the golden love fluid of the Lord himself.

The only Oscar nomination for BEST FRIGGING FILM given to an animated movie snagged by Beauty and the Beast says otherwise.

Towering inferno was "yet another film" to be nominated for Best picture.

Beauty and the Beast is the first and only animated picture to ever be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.

It also was the first animated film to win the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture — Musical or Comedy (Lion King and Toy Story 2 managed this later).

Its the only 2D animated film to get a 93%+ rating average on Rotten tomatos (Lion King got a 92%). Pixar however has a 2-time 100% record with both Toy stories.

Yeah its a musical, a genre that seems dead to modern audiences, but its still one of the best animated films ever.
