Don't you dare clean that [Workstation]

This is the Workstation thread!
(Mod Approved)

Everything must remain exactly where it lays, no moving dirty plates, no dusting, no moving papers nothing!

I took two photos today

One is my actual work workstation

photo09221502.jpg

Obviously I have tons of car fluids and work for Acura. I have my own phone and chair. Total big shot

while the other is my desk at my apartment

dsci0012a.jpg

Chock full of important adult papers and bills! Also knick knacks out the ass such as my spider-man lunch box I won from a claw machine. A classy Zelda DS on there as well.

Is... is that an Atari XE? No wait, the XE didn't have a numpad, did it?

I just made this new workstation, computer used to be in the living room, and decided to move into my room in my apartment.

I love that now I can lie in my bed and watch movies on my computer.

Two in fact! Hehe actually it's sitting on top of some bricks, that way it keeps a distance from the floor and picks up less dust. It's a Coolermaster 690.

SWEEET! I had a 1040ST (actually, i still have it in the basement somewhere). Was a great machine -- I composed a ton of music on it.

Before the 1040 I had an Atari 800.

I'll play. I work out of my house so this is both my work and home rig.

The only thing I moved was my iPhone which I used to take the picture... Actually, I did move a sheet of paper containing a bunch of passwords...

funny how the atari was the "music machine" when it only had a 3 channel tone generator... (compared to the amiga's 4 channel PCM) Still I guess back then people would take anything that had MIDI ports. I'm much more an amiga guy.

Everything I did was via the built-in MIDI ports so I wasn't limited by internal sound generators. At the time it supported up to 16 midi channels (might only have been limited by the software I was using). I had all sorts of keyboards and drum machines plugged into it. So much fun.

My workstation is temporarily set up on a cheap spare desk in a corner of my bedroom, because I am in the middle of repainting and reflooring my office. God it looks so ghetto. Why couldn't we have had this thread in like two weeks?

After that, I get to move my bed into my office while I repaint and refloor my bedroom.

Sorry about the image quality, the good phone is charging, so I have to use my work phone.

But if I did that you'd get a weirdly proportioned 20" monitor running at 860x540

The con of an HDTV as a monitor is that I'm capped at 1920x1080, but the pros are it was much cheaper to go with an LCD TV at this size compared to an LCD monitor, I have a ridiculously huge amount of screen real estate (being able to have two pages of a character bible open next to two pages of text is pretty awesome), and picture in picture means I can watch TV/movie or play videogames while I'm supposed to be working.

It does change your requirements for a desk and chair, however, since your line of sight needs to be a little bit higher to prevent neck strain (which I am starting to feel now due to using the temporary desk and chair).

Being able to kick back in the chair and watch a 1080p blu-ray in the office is pretty nice if the living room is occupied, though.

Getting the multi-monitor setup at work was the best decision. I somehow convinced my boss to upgrade me from a single 15" screen to dual 17" monitors so I can have code on one screen and the resulting output on the other.

It just felt so constraining. I don't suppose it helped that I'd gotten so used to my 19" + 24" at home.

Everyone at work has dual monitors and I'd say it's increased productivity by at least 50%. Just being able to have one window open while you deal with another and be able to see the whole thing is great. Wish I had a camera. :P

Thanks a lot guys. I was just fine with my 24" monitor. Yeah it would seems a bit lacking when editing video. Sometimes I might think, "Man it would be nice to have code on one screen and have the output on another." Really though I was just with 24". I then see the last few posts and now I freaking want another 24" monitor so I can have a dual monitor setup. Damn you workstation thread.

Its so awesome. A lot of things I do require cross referencing multiple systems and databases for information, so having 2 monitors is totally invaluable. It's so infuriating to have just my laptop at home at the moment (computer is being shipped over).

I'm not allowed to post pictures from where I work due to NDA issues... but... I have five monitors of various sizes, two multi-line phones, and three different types of printers for different media scattered across twelve feet of desk space.

I hate it. I'd be perfectly happy with three monitors / two pc boxes and alt-tabbing between programs, but that's too complex for the other people that use this desk on the other shifts.
