2006 new releases thread

Some basic guidelines for people just joining up with us:
  • we know that dethklok are the brutalest
  • we know that Dragonforce are the noodliest
  • we know that Opeth is some craaaazy shit, dog
  • we do, in fact, not look down upon Between the Buried and Me
  • we do, in fact, look down harshly upon Killswitch Engage

Please keep in mind - kvlties just wanna have fun. If you can dig that, bring your black leather and come masturbate with us to the butteriest riffs this side of the gulf of Darien.

Man, Gigantic Brain's been busy since I last looked at them. I'm liking these tracks I'm hearing from World, reminds me of my favorite stuff from Devin Townsend's Ziltoid the Omniscient.

I actually prefer The Invasion Discography, when the band was quite sillier than they are now. The serious material like World is interesting enough, but there was just something about that collection that blew me away (if you remember, it was on the old top 200 list, though I later admitted it was part joke being there).

Nice thread title. Totally forgot it was time to change.

Going away until Monday. I'll try and get the damn Power metal list posted to RYM next week, it's a month overdue.

    The Voice of Steel

I must have this, but I don't see it for purchase anywhere. Seriously I need to bump this in my car and scare the other military students.

I was lucky to find that at MDF. I was looking through a guy's stuff and made a remark about how no one had it, and he says "Oh, wait...".

He dug through some boxes and pulled out a copy for me.

    Man, MDF ruled.

I'm going to go ahead and assume you've already acquired everything by Summoning, the spiritual font from which all things epic originate.

I'm kind of new to black metal, so maybe I'm tossing out obvious suggestions, but here are a couple just in case:

Glad to see somebody else mention Crimfall. If you like them, do check out Whyzdom, who share some of the same sensibilities, though not quite the same sound. (E.g. exploring the heavier, more progressive side of symphonic metal and actually making good use of orchestral elements.)

As far as epic black metal goes, it's definitely worth mentioning Hellveto. Their discography's a little uneven, but overall, they've produced some of the most effective fusions of classical symphonic music and black metal that I've heard. In Arms of Kurpian Phantom is probably my favorite, though the blog mentions that their second to most recent album is excellent (I haven't yet gotten a hold of it).

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18nlcYtiyjM

Not the best song from the album, but the only one I could dig up quickly on youtube. Also, that Nazxul album is quite the winner; listening to it always gives me the urge to start up a cult dedicated to the destruction of the world. Seconding Summoning as well; probably the best Tolkien metal out there. Oath Bound and Minas Morgul are good places to start and absolutely fantastic albums.

Not all of Summoning... *puts on orc mask.*

    Also, for your enjoyment.

iTunes says Equilibrium has a new album coming out on the 12th. I was hesitant to like them because too synth-sounding musical instruments are a massive peeve of mine. C'mon guys, it's not new technology, just look at Soul Calibur 4. It can be done right.

I'm kind of new to black metal, so maybe I'm tossing out obvious suggestions, but here are a couple just in case:

    Welcome Adus!

We actually keep a blog here with all manner of reviews, many of which are black metal.

    http://www.fromthedustreturned.com

Also I placed a list of my 400 classic black metal albums up to the year 2000, this can be found at RYM:

    http://rateyourmusic.com/list/autothrall/autothralls_classic_black_metal_formula_400

Each has a brief description, you'll find a lot of epic stuff in there.

I will be placing a modern, 400 black metal records from 2001-2010 at some point in the coming months.

A lot of reading, I know, but you can cover many bases there...

Finally saw Katatonia last night and it was a great show. About how I expected the experience to be. Unfortunately for the first song or so I was close to the stage and to the right so the guitar on that side overpowered the mix a lot. By the second song I got into the middle and everything sounded just right. Enjoyed the setlist. Expected it to be mainly their last few albums but I liked their representation of some past albums with Saw you Drown and Teargas. Omerta was a good song to have played as well. At the end I somehow ended up with a crumpled setlist in my pocket. Don't listen to them much, but Orphaned Land and Swallow the Sun were enjoyable.

Nice. Any quick recommendations for someone who likes orchestral/symphonic elements?

Recent recommendations for this might be:

Suffering Souls "Sadistic Goat Complex" (2009)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vQnvlFmfqY

Nazxul "Iconoclast" (2009) (Which another poster here pointed out)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=240H7a6NBkA&feature=related

Nokturnal Mortem "Voices of Steel" (2009)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R3Bm_cNkt1g

    Sigh "Hangman's Hymn" (2007)

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tso2Ee0eVOc

A lot of people here like the band Ceremonial Castings who are symphonic black metal.

Also, the new Dimmu Borgir album that I just reviewed fits the parameters, though I can't give it a glaring recommendation.

I don't have time at the minute to run through the RYM list and point out specifics, that's why I wrote the list :D

Obviously you should also know Emperor's In the Nightside Eclipse. I think this is the best symphonic black metal album of all time, even if that just means an occasional keyboard line...

t Adus: Borknagar's Quintessence may also fit the bill.

Edit: Need to qualify that by saying it's not really symphonic. Good bridge to other subgenres, though.

That's Vortex singing. I didn't know where he was. What the fuck. :^:

He sings like a very, very very evil angel from hell.
