    This thread is timely!

I've got this spider outside of my house that I want to identify. I live in Indianapolis, and have never seen this before. Anyhow, it looks to be black, or dark brown, is slightly larger than a US quarter, and has a thick web of about 1' circumference, with a tunnel made out of the web where the spider sits.

Any idea what that could be?

Can you describe the coloration, patterns and number + arrangement of eyes? I can't seem to find anything going off just Indianapolis funnel-web spider.

I'll try to snap a picture of it tonight.

If that was a place I'd leave for it today!

Also I am sooo gay for Spider-Man.

@futore: What kind of spider is that in pic 1? It looks a bit like a crab spider but it is hanging from a web.

get plenty of orb weavers around my house, and lots of cellar spiders in it

also during the warm months there are legions of little black hunting spiders in the yard; it's something to see dozens of them scurrying out of your way as you walk

As long as the fights are evenly matched I don't see why they should, I mean they are bugs!

I'd always put my money on a jumping spider since they are the luchadores of bug combat.

Ah, the Japanese. I remember going on a field trip with my 7th grade homeroom class to see a Mongoose/habu fight. Remember the 80s, when your parents had no real clue about the content of your field trips, and just signed the forms? Good times.

Spiders are horrific, esp when you are slightly inebriated, walk into their gossamer strands, and completely freak out trying to get out of this huge sidewalk spanning web. Sober in a heartbeat.

    Harmless fellows.

    Also not spiders.

There are actually three things commonly called daddy long legses.
    • Harvestmen (not spiders)
    • Crane flies (not spiders)
    • Cellar spiders (THESE ARE FUCKING SPIDERS)

Cellar spiders are awesome because they are completely harmless, kind of funny looking and they beat lots of more dangerous spiders in a fight.

Growing up we called harvestmen daddy long-legs, crane flies giant mosquitoes, and I've never had any contact with cellar spiders.

Got these terms stuck in my head.

Face your fears. Go outside and let a big spider crawl around on your hands, won't even be a thing pretty quick.

we have some of those big giant yellow and black orb-weaver type fellows here, i believe!

my mom said one of them spat at her but i find this claim dubious at best.

also, we have these big orange fuzzy bastards that spin big, pretty webs and are about the size of a marble, sometimes larger.

I don't like cellar spiders. I'm tall and they really like to live on ceilings. I don't usually kill spiders, but they are an exception. Living in Japan taught me that after a spider gets to a certain size, they can freak me out a bit. There were some, like a wolf spider, that got about 5-6 across and they were very fast.

I kept a black widow as a pet for a few weeks when I was in eighth grade. Then she laid eggs and I knew the only way to deal with not having a billion baby spiders in my room was to use a bottle rocket inside her container, a honey bear.

The only spiders I have any fear of are fast ones that move strangely and Australian Funnel Webs. Really creepy ones may also apply at certain times, but only when they are really goddamn creepy.

All of my least favorite spiders (the few that exist) tend to be flat and gangly, like a crab. They are also all very fast.

Samir this thread makes me happy. I am a fan of spiders and have a bunch of tarantulas, and get pretty sick of people telling me they're gross or horrible or whatever, so it's good to see someone else who thinks they're rad.
