Charlotte Sometimes has a free EP online that you can download directly Here Apparently she got dropped from her label so she could use some word of mouth.
Also MC Frontalot has a metric shitload of his album tracks for download on his site as well as mirrored on His last.fm page if you want. You may have heard of him from PAX or the 1st Rainslick game!
I've used Guvera a fair few times, it's definitely worth checking out. Basically they use advertising revenue to cover the music downloads, with the support of the record labels (major ones too). It's a pretty sweet deal.
EDIT: Oh my god, there's so much more stuff than there used to be. I'm getting a bunch of Nine Inch Nails tracks right now, this is awesome!
Okay I've updated a bunch of stuff, not sure if I'll catch up all the way before I have to go to sleep. If I've left your suggestion out it's because you didn't link, I couldn't see where the download was, or there was no download. If I'm just being dumb then by all means post it again and rub my nose in it, it's the only way I'll learn.
New list feature - dark orange highlight is for when a particular artist is doing a "download of the week" dealie, as Anamanaguchi and Kanye are. This way you know which ones you should be checking back on.
Coming soon - when the list gets big enough I'll break it up into alphabetical sub-sections. How is everyone finding it for readability and utility thus far?

Reads fine to me.
I've got so much music to listen to now.
I don't know if it's worth noting in the OP that Illegal-Art is a collection of stuff. Girl Talk's stuff is just one of many on there, with his four releases being directly linked here:
We not racist, we love white people! Ford trucks, apple pies! Bald eagles!
Yeah, Cheetos, Doritos, Fritos, Pringles, Kraft Singles, Slim Jims, Sierra Mist!

they are so damn clever in their songs it is unbelievable
OP is now up-to-date and reformatted. Girl Talk's albums can now be found with many others on the Illegal Art website, under the FUS heading.
EDIT: Just had an idea, from now on every time I update the list I'll put an asterisk next to all the most recent additions. I'd prefer to highlight them with a different colour but that's not really practical.

There's a bunch of good and free ambient and chiptune albums on here. Some are totally free to download (and are marked "FREE DOWNLOAD"), and others just say "MORE INFORMATION", and to be honest I haven't even look at any of those, so I don't know what the deal is there.
I got on this to download some Fighter X albums - if I'm not mistaken he was busking at PAX 2008.
I'll only do updates for each page or so from here on out. I think mods have the ability to view all previous edits to a post, which means another copy is saved on the servers every time I make a change. It's just text, but it's already a long list and it adds up!
Music for kids who can't read good is an indie music blog that always has a couple songs available when they feature an artist or CD. It is kind of hit or miss, but enough hits that it keeps a spot in my read.

Music is free so long as you are willing to "play their games" (a riddle for each song in the website for the first album, a funny little flash game in the website for the second album)
I don't know if this counts, or if it works outside of the United States, but NPR's First Listen has a bunch of great music available to stream before it actually gets released

beko releases free EPs from various bands; lots of indie, low-fi, "dreamwave" (wth?)

The Armed are a hardcore/metal band, and if you like The Dillinger Escape Plan you'll probably like them.
Their first album "These Are Lights" is free right here, and they made an EP after that called "Common Enemies" (also free) which you can get here.
in fact, most of their website doesn't seem to be working, but they still have one track available for download
it's bubbly electronic music and i wish i could give them money for music but i can't find a way to do so
edit: you can listen to it by clicking on the "Press Start" video on their home page, but the download seems to be gone
Wait, wasn't it free before?
it's still free, but subscribing gets you some "vip" type stuff
www.midnightbrown.com is Jeff Gerstmann's band, with all four of their albums up for free download.
