she's egalitarian and gentle, she is very kind hearted, in over her head, humble, trusting
qui gon is stoic, firm, instructive, paternal, wizened, faithful, patient, and bold
obi wan is ambitious, impetuous, reckless, and a whiner
these are all things i was thinking while watching those scenes
them not being 'rogue-y' and fitting that overblown, played-to, 1 dimensional stereotype that han followed in most of the OT doesn't disappoint me much
honestly, a lot of the OT was so incredibly prototypical- christ, the villain was a half robot with a deep voice who liked choking people- that characters not being so trope-ly defined is... not a bad thing, from where i'm standing. i found the OT characters kind of ridiculous, for the most part. it's a case study in fitting the mold- in trying to fit the mold!

Jar Jar Binks is a refined creature trying to make his way into Gungan life. While Gungans as a whole are very xenophobic Jar-Jar chose for himself to reach out and help creatures beyond his race, facing a backlash from his peers. Nevertheless he succeeds thanks to his adamant nature and secures a bongo for the Jedi.
Jar Jar Binks is an altruistic and humble creature. Thanks to his diplomatic skills he earned the title of 1-star Bombad General but always felt unworthy of such a high rank. Despite his rise to fame he never forgets about the help he can provide his peers.
Honestly, Chu, I think you're imagining qualities for them which weren't illustrated by either their writing or the acting which takes place on the screen. That's fine, everybody does it to an extent, but you have to realize that they were not distinctively drawn, right?

he's trope after trope because he helped defined most of them? i mean, he did such a good job in those movies that his career was the only one not shot to death

he's pretty much designed for an exercise like this- he's trope after trope
which i guess isn't bad for a corny sci-fi 'opera' from the seventies, or whatever, but he's certainly not a great, complex, nuanced character
he's a caricature- hell, people describe him as a rogue! we have like, a special film role that he's modeled after
how many of your friends do you describe as rogues?
the series was full of shitty chars
What the hell dude
The point is that he's ten times more complex than any of the characters in TPM
Who cares if he's a hero trope or rogue trope or whatever, the point is that the writing allowed him to have a personality that people connect with and remember

right, i recognize that, it was this big, campy, over the type archetypical thing
i don't think it needs to be taken seriously, really- and i only really, really liked one of the six films (one that was, as you know, pretty heavy on exposition and character building)
i p. much reject the premise that the OT was amazing and deep and complex and the PT was flat and uninteresting. i think it's valid to say the PT strayed from that campy origin, and didn't have clearly defined characters- but i don't thin you can make a qualitative comparison on those grounds, really. only a quantitative checklist.
5 shitty films, with the 3 newest sucking in ways that the other 2 didn't. but still 5 shitty movies, so i won't compare them 'good versus bad'.
the cast of the OT were all archetypal sure, but it fit with the story and the setting. Star Wars was originally an homage to the sci-fi movies and t.v. shows Lucas and others grew up with. Fun, campy sci-fi in the same vein as Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon.
the cast of the PT weren't exactly complex, they were just poorly written.

I miss my rogue in WoW. Like a pet that died or something.
