If you're willing to wait a year Planet Michael has been announced for sometime next year.

I wonder what in game benefits you'll get from Jesus Juice.

Why wait for Planet Michael when you can play Hello Kitty Island Adventures now?

There is the MMO called Face of Mankind, its free. Its pretty much an action mmo, but feels like a shooter. The thing about it is that it is heavy on roleplay, and there are almost no NPCs, the government, economy, pretty much everything is run by players. It doesn't have a very big population though, and sometimes the mechanics are pretty confusing for new comers.

I think since they introduced premium accounts and you can't go above a certain rank a lot of people ditched the game.

If you do check it out be sure to go in with a group of friends, with atleast one of them knowing what the hell is going on. Being Space Cops is probably the funnest thing to ever come out of an mmofps, but it does get real repetitive after awhile.

The people running the game are huge assholes as well. I wrote a 10 paragraph and thoughtfully constructed post on their forums ages back on what my group of friends and i thought of the game after playing it. It wasnt insulting or bashing, we weighed in on the pros on cons and listed everything, good and bad. Why the bad outweighed the good ect and what could be improved.

All they did was send me a PM basically barking at me and telling me my post was against their forum rules because it was "badmouthing their game and company" and promptly deleted the post. It really badmouthed nothing and was intentionally constructive.

They did the same thing to anyone else who posted anything other than 100% positive criticism. After that i stopped playing entirely and havent even looked at the game or its web site since. They flat out refuse to listen to their player base and charge a monthly fee for a game that esentially has no content. Their content is the playerbase and they wrecked their playerbase by charging too much money per month for a tiny world with bad graphics (like 1999 era bad.) and zero content.

Well I have to admit there is stuff that is bad about it, but I really like the core idea. I think someone needs to steal it and make a good game rather than just a playable one.

Are you saying that APB is like FoM? It doesn't seem like that to me. From what I've heard, its just the criminals doing missions and the cops stop them, theres no world economy, theres no politics or anything.

I was saying if you want to remake FoM onto something that didn't handle like dook and look like dook, apb is up for grabs.

I'm afraid the only MMO that sprang to mind under those criteria was the MMOFPS Planetside, which I haven't been back to for years now and from what I hear, I'm very sorry to say, is in a sad state. A darn shame, to be sure.

Planetside is a wholly persistent MMOFPS where players, as members of one of the three factions, Terran Republic, Vanu Sovereignty or the New Conglomerate, fight for territorial control of the continents of Auraxis. It is wholly PvP, with no PvE elements. Each continent is a huge landmass controlled via interlinked bases of 5 different varieties, each conferring specific benefits to all allied bases they're latticed with (e.g, Bio Lab lowers respawn timers, Tech Plant allows advanced vehicle and aircraft to be fabricated in the vehicle bays etc).

The main thing with Planetside is scale. It's quite something to be a part of a 3-way conflict between the TR, NC and VS, particularly in the land battles between bases. Population lock for each empire on a continent is 133 a side, so you're looking at a fight with 400 participants, close enough. Commonly there would be fighting on two or more fronts, so you could join the main fray or join up with a squad trying to get a foothold elsewhere.

Man, this is making me nostalgic. Such good fun, working with and fighting alongside my outfit. In fact, most everyone was friendly about everything and pretty sure that isn't just looking back with rose-tinted glasses. Sure, there was drama between outfits, but most of it was friendly rivalry and only the minority being people getting too serious business about it all. Still, nothing quite like moving with a procession of Magrider hovertanks raining destruction with topmounted railguns, or being part of a Galaxy hotdrop onto the roof of a contested base, hurriedly hacking doors open and diving inside before the orbital lasers hit, then beelining for the bases' generator, control console or wherever we're targeting. Or if we're feeling silly, everyone getting an ANT (non-combat vehicle everyone can use) and making a charge for the enemy base's courtyard, ramming into anyone between here and there.

I think it pretty much got levelling and availability of equipment right, too, in the form of certifications. All equipment's attained via the same equipment terminals, but certifications determine what you're allowed to use and're learned by spending cert points at cert terminals found in your empire's sanctuary and any Bio Lab. For instance, Medium Assault costs 2 cert points and unlocks a group of weapons such as a shotgun, assault-rifle and an empire-specific AR. Air Support, costing 3 cert points, would give you access to the Galaxy Dropship, Liberator bomber and Lodestar airborne vehicle transport/mobile repair bay. So, really, higher battlerank gives you greater versatility in choosing equipment as opposed to superior equipment. The disadvantage of lower battlerank is it requires you to specialise more.

...It's been a while, but I -think- for the first week or so after a new character's been created, they can change certs as often as they like at a cert terminal, too. After that you can only unlearn one certification every 24 hours on a character.

Unfortunately it is very much past it's prime and there's now a very empty gap in the market that it once filled. I think there's possibly quite a sizable contingent out there, of which I'd probably be a number, that're looking for something to pick up Planetside's banner and continue it's legacy.

I've actually heard about Planetside and the first thing that came to my mind was Battlefield-MMO. I did want to try it some time back, but with a low population and no trial I don't think I could. Are the servers still up?

I think all the servers got merged into one to combat the problems of low population relatively recently and there was an expanded trial programme of some sort running at one point. Not sure if that's still going.

I suspect there's probably a problem for newer players as well in that the majority that've stuck on to the bitter end are of the old guard, so to speak. That is to say, a newer player now, in Planetside, will mainly be up against veteran players who know it inside out the vast majority of the time. As a result it may now have a steeper learning curve for anyone newly entering PS than it used to, which might serve to offput them... a catch 22 of a sort. That's just my conjecture though, may be unsubstantiated.

Also been some slow admin responses to blatant hacking from what I've heard a while back, but I don't think that's too common.

In anycase, should you go for it I hope you have a great time with it. My VS outfit has moved on to other pastures, but should you need help with anything at all within PS, I would really recommend hooking up with Hansime/Figment of your Imagination if you can. Mains NC, is very friendly, extremely helpful, has their head on straight and is just a great guy, really. Wouldn't hesitate to help you should you ask and will probably know who to introduce you to on any empire to get you into a supportive and friendly outfit.

Really need to catch up with him, sometime. It's been too long.

A quick search is showing up no trial system for PS that I can find... will continue searching a while, see if I find anything.

Edit: Still no luck, but still looking. Aggravatingly, the www.planetsidetrial.com domain-name seems to have expired little more than a week ago. Afraid I'm not optimistic about finding a still on-going trial system.

Planetside used to run the Reserves program, where for a year people could sign up to be "Reserves" and they would have a free to play account that only hit a certain rank.

Sucks that only went on for a year though

I think they implied it by recommending it as a basis to expand upon that other game of that nature.

Oh, well I said Face of Mankind should do something like that, not APB. If they made an APB spiritual successor, it would need to be more roleplaylike, having gang wars, gang politics, selling drugs, buying things like strip clubs or extorting buisness.
