so you believe that it is possibile that there are distinct genetically-based behavioral or cognitive differences between different races of people or different genders of people?

because the example of "racism" you gave was drawing a possible causal vector between low IQ scores of blacks and a genetic tendency to perform poorly on IQ tests.

Even if solid evidence of this hypothetical genetic etiology were found, it would have so little relevance on most common political or ethical discussions that emphasizing that evidence would itself be a racist or sexist position. Just because I think that an idea is being given too much weight doesn't mean I think the idea is factually untrue. However, in this case, there is no solid evidence of genetic etiology of cognitive differences between men and women or between black and white people.

The fact that we're having this discussion (that you're more interested in the truth value of the statement "there are genetic differences between X and Y groups" rather than the relevancy or context) pretty much demonstrates my point perfectly.

i'm not really interested in whether or why black folks do poorly on IQ tests.

i'm mostly interested in how you're carving out your particular position on racial or gender differences as not only the only factually right one, but the only morally feasible one.

Other people will, too. If you make it just as easy to get something legally then some people will buy your stuff rather than pirate it. GOG sells DRM-less games. You could just get these games for free, you could even perhaps find the GOG installers themselves, but people do buy from GOG and you can even search for Master of Orion or Planescape Torment, whatever, and see that the GOG versions haven't been leaked on places like Pirate Bay. Good will goes a long way.

It gets even worse when you're not American. Some shows have gotten a lot better at getting faster releases on DVD, and a lot of shows get syndicated on European channels within a week or two, but that doesn't help if you don't watch TV.

But a whole lot of shows still require you to wait 6-18 months after the US DVD release before they're on DVD in Europe.

Which is my point- a lot of industries don't seem to understand the fact that they can instantly deliver their product to any point in the world at any time.

You know besides the well implemented DRM one of the reasons why Steam is so successful is because Steam is viewed as a friend, Steam is popular, it's cool to be on Steam and have big Steam libraries and take advantage of the great sales. And I think this is a big reason why GOG is successful too.

It's socially beneficial to yourself to support these services, you gain cred with the community. If you pirate you become the Other.

no, i'm not. i didn't read the book.

but i remember when that book was published, the reflexive response from the right was to say "well yeah we know that black people are stupid" and the reflexive response from the left was to try to nibble away at his statistics or data.

and it basically seemed like an enormous exercise in confirmation bias on both sides. the left was not going to ever accept evidence of any kind of cognitive difference between races, and the right was going to do the opposite, even if it meant having to eat some crow about how smart askinazi jews are.

In fact, I think that was the point of my statement that certain industries don't "get" the internet.

You can deliver your product, very cheaply and efficiently, to anywhere in the world, and additionally you can connect with people all around the world to help localize instantly and in realtime.

So why are you taking so long?

This has nothing to do with piracy, and everything to do with speed of product transfer.

so why do physically provable things like tsachs or sickle-cell anemia or hypertension or blood type correspond to these entirely unscientific 19th century constructions of race?

i'm not really convinced that race is that much of a thing, or that classical groupings make much sense. but it feels to me that it's being kind of desperately disregarded.
