Thanks for the replies, all! Pretty even...I guess I should've mentioned that I wasn't necessarily planning on the two pieces being the exact same place under different lighting conditions (in which case, yes, I'd do both!)...I had different ideas in terms of mood/purpose, colors, etc... the top one would be more serene and mysterious, and the bottom would be a little more sinister. The statues and maybe some of the detailing would be different between the two.
...so I think I'm going to go with the bottom one, partially because I rarely do under-lighting, rarely do darker/more foreboding places, and I think it'll offer some nice variety for the 'folio. After thinking it over, I also decided I want to do something outside of my typical "ambient lighting with thick misty atmosphere", and try this, which will make things look a little more complex. Shanks - I'll take what ya'll said into account.
So I worked on the faces some more. Actually used a 3-D human head for reference as to where to put everything with only changing the locations of parts slightly. Thoughts?

It's kind of hard to critique something so stylised Arden, but you could definately stand to work on varying line weights. It will help give the image depth and form, at the moment it looks very flat.
Mustang is right about line width. Some good strokes will help take it out of that american anime range, the harsh angles and flatness is what you're trying to eliminate. Here are some examples that are cartoony but with line weight: http://irukatheslayer.deviantart.com/favourites/#/d2xf00x
Perhaps you should try drawing for a more realistic reference.

@Arden My quick critique, based on what you said alongside your previous version of this character, would be to shrink the eyes if you're REALLY trying to stay away from the manga look. Oversized eyes is one of the most tried-and-true hallmarks of manga/anime.
Also, the long lines under his eyes are either going to make him look old or tired. Not sure if either one of those is what you're going for.
Overall, I think the big eyes and long, simplistic nose are lending more to the manga-influenced look that you were trying to stay away from, so I would work on those, in addition to the line-weight comments that Mustang and Iruka mentioned.
Thanks, Vargas. I had been staring at it for so long I didn't notice.
Also, I love your lines and the dynamics of that wip. I'm not sure about the outstretched leg, I have never seen someone run like that. But it is a cool exaggeration.

Ha, yeah, I don't think there are many people capable of running like that, even if they wanted to. But I thought it looked cool, I just wanted to make him run as hard as he could.

Understood. I think you succeeded. I want to see it with some color!
Color thumbs...I did a few more, but I took them out.
Originally I was planning on doing #6, but now I'm not sure. I probably won't do #3 because the color palette is too similar to the other environment I have on my site.
I like the darker purple blue/tones on 5. but think 1 has a more effective lighting setup. The blue lanterns in 5 are very interesting and have a lot of contrast, but they end up taking the focus away from the statues, which are presumably more important.
I was also kinda leaning towards #5, and was planning on having the tops of the statues be bluer from the lanterns, so I guess that would help the statues stand out a bit more, even though the statues weren't really meant to be super important...but if I make them stick out more and seem that way, that's fine too.
