Sony Gamers Day (LittleBigPlanet! Ratchet! God of War! Uncharted! Heavenly Sword!)

No thread on this yet? For shame.

Earlier this week, Sony had their big press event but all information was held by NDA's until today. They showed a ton of games and so far three have been shown; Syphon Filter: Logan's Shadow (PSP), SOCOM Confrontation (PS3) and Pain (PS3 downloadable title).

Here's what's popped up so far:

    Awesome stuff.

    another PSP Syphon Filter? Righteous!

EDIT: Just read the 1up impression for SOCOM PS3. It's stuff like this that makes me curse living in the country. No broadband...between this game and Warhawk both being online only, I currently have no reason to lay down the money for a PS3. I realize I'm in the minority, though.

EDITmkII: SOCOM: Tactical Strike for PSP makes up for the above disappointment in a big way though. FUCKING A.

They seemed to have a large focus on 2007 games at Gamers Day, so nope, no Wipeout.

There's hope that they'll focus more on their 2008 games at E3 though, what with Killzone being unveiled there.

Funnily enough though, neither SOCOM: Confrontation or SOCOM: Tactical Strike are being developed by Zipper. Instead they're being developed by Slant Six Studios (who helped Sony Bend with Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror). I wonder what Zipper are doing...

Also, Jack Tretton commented on the PSP Store:
On the subject of online stores, the long-awaited PSP online store was briefly mentioned by SCEA president Jack Tretton, who admitted such a service should have premiered long ago. "I think the advent of a long awaited and quite frankly long overdue ability to deliver a downloadable service for the PSP will help us out a great deal," he said. "Hopefully we'll have it out there by the fall." No other details were discussed.

Btw, Folklore used to be called Monster Kingdom: Unknown Realms. It got positive impressions from 1UP at TGS.

LittleBigPlanet looks amazing. I was filled with glee and momentarily entertained the idea of purchasing a PS3 down the line. That's a pretty staggering achievement right there.

They did mention that they put a great deal of energy into developing procedurally generated animations. It did seem to be much more spontaneous and interactive with the environment, but I'd agree that the whole thing was pretty awkward.

i didn't even think it did look that interactive with the environment

like he just slid up and down inclines with the same wooden running animation as everything else

and the occasional slidey-looking "step up" animation

the closest equivalent i can think of is tomb raider (the new one), and the animation wasn't even as good as that

God I want Heavenly Sword so bad. I don't know how you can't be interested in that one what with WETA and Andy Serkis working on it quite extensively. And Lair, too. That comes out in a month, so I'm pretty excited. I can't wait to walk out with my copy. That Folklore game looks really interesting, too. I had to check out the previews for it after I saw the screenshot. You rip those monsters' souls out of their bodies and can then use them in combat.

I've finally gone through most of the videos (yet to see the Folkslore, R&C and Pain videos) and as always, LittleBigPlanet looks fucking awesome. The character customisation looks insane, though I really wonder if we can create our own items and then import them into the game... I really want a little Solid Snake guy...

As for the others, Heavenly Sword looks fantastic. The detail on the characters faces is god-damn insane, as are the animations.

SOCOM Confrontation looks damn good, especially from a team that had previously only co-developed a PSP game. There was a moment at the start of the trailer though, where I was expecting Snake to run by the camera.

Uncharted, I don't know what trailer you guys saw but it looked awesome. Sure a couple of animations look a bit off but generally, it looked like really fun. Seeing as it's being developed by Naughty Dog, those problems will most likely be fixed by the time the game comes out (or at least I really hope they do).

The PSP games, God of War: Chains of Olympus looks the best out of the bunch. The screen I've got in the OP looks fucking awesome.

Syphon Filter: Gabe's Shadow sounds and looks pretty damn good. The story alone sounds like a big improvement upon Dark Mirror.

SOCOM: Tactical Strike looks great. The gameplay seems to suit the PSP a hell of a lot more than the previous entries, which required a lot more precision.

And lastly, the intro for Silent Hill Origins is fantastic. The only problem I noticed is that sometimes the camera would suddenly jump to another position.

It was pretty floaty in general. The character looked disconnected from the entire environment, for the most part.

But, you know, work in progress olol.

Edit: I am really encouraged, however, that just about every time he want back to hiding behind the rock/pillar/what have you, he was standing in a different position. Seemed more organic. If they can get rid of that floaty feeling, that's going to be an absolutely excellent game.

I was surprised that they didn't mention the sound at all though, as that's supposed to be one of the big aspects of the game.

And the fact that they showed SOCOM PS3 with a map from SOCOM 2 makes me very, very hopeful for the series after 3.

Seriously the games look amazing. But lets hope they're not just polishing turds, you know? I want the PS3, but $600 isn't a justifiable purchase for me right now. Not for a gaming machine, at least.

Which one is supposed to be like Goddess of War? Heavenly Sword? I'm least excited about that because... well... I'm probably the only one who didn't really enjoy the first (or the second) God of War.

Thanks, it took me forever to get all the links.

    As for Heavenly Sword:
"There's no multiplayer mode in Heavenly Sword as our focus was always to create an intense personal experience; it would have been too damn complex to deal with that as well," Antoniades told Eurogamer. "We did, however, develop the combat system using multiplayer test levels, as it's a great way of soak testing and balancing it."

"So who knows? Maybe we will decide to go down that route sometime soon. And when we do, it won't just be slapped-on to please marketing tick-boxes. You can be assured that we have our sights on multiplayer."

    Link

So multiplayer may pop up as downloadable content at some point.

Btw, supposedly Uncharted had less than half of the animations in the demo build.

One of IGN's bullet points on the next Ratchet is:
You can force almost anything in the game to dance!

Oh, hell yes. And apparently the tune is "Stayin' Alive," and the designers have made it their personal mission to get that song lodged in our heads. Love it.

IGN's also concerned about Heavenly Sword, since they haven't really been exposed to the actual combat at all. But apparently the visual polish is through the roof... the sound is being done by folks from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and the cutscenes are being directed by Andy "Gollum" Sirkus (what the?!).

Edit: Interesting to note, but there was absolutely zilch from the PS2 shown. Looks like God of War 2 really was the swan song, at least for non-third party stuff.

Games like Uncharted and R&C Future are appealing to me the most; I have to admit that after my initial "lol Sony" at the PS3's launch, the allure of games has shifted me to a cautious "wait until it's cheap enough" approach, which I think is a large chunk of the Internet's response nowadays.

And of course, as a happy PSP owner I'm way stoked about Chains of Olympus, although I'm still unsold over the control mechanisms. I think it was IGN that said a control description had the duck-rolls to "L+R+analog nub."

    Pricing for Warhawk!

Warhawk Gets Blu-ray Extras, Public Beta
Bluetooth headset and more with the retail version.
    By Sam Kennedy, 05/17/2007

While Sony had previously confirmed to 1UP both a Blu-ray and PSN download for Warhawk, it has now revealed that the Blu-ray version will have extras to help warrant the higher price tag at retail. Packaged with the Blu-ray version, which we assume will cost $60 (while we assume the PSN download will be $30), will be a Bluetooth headset, some behind-the-scenes making-of footage, and some other goodies.

The bluetooth headset is a pretty good deal, as long as it's quality.

It's a PSN title where you fling a ragdoll around a city to break stuff. Eg, the trailer shows the player flinging his guy into someones bike, which breaks and causes the rider to fly off it. It looks kind of interesting but something I'd get bored with after 10 minutes of play.

As for Warhawk's pricing, on one hand it seems fine but on the other the retail price seems pretty expensive. Ah well, I know that if I bought it I'd get the retail version anyway, simply because the download caps over here and the fact that I don't have a headset.

Btw, I've watched the other videos and Ratchet looks fucking awesome. The boss was insanely awesome.

Folklore looked pretty good too... Well until I watched the Developer Walkthrough on Gametrailers... I'm pretty sure the guy talking them through the game was the same guy that started the whole "Hit his weak point for Massive Damage!" thing, because he sounded like a fucking idiot. "This game's done by Game Republic... I haven't really met them so I can't say much about them... Um... Uhh..." What the fuck? You can't get a PR guy to come in and present the game? You have to get this guy?

Also, the robotic voices in SOCOM: Tactical Strike are terrible. I'm assuming they're just temporary because they haven't recorded the proper voices yet but why couldn't they've just gotten a couple of devs into a sound proof room and recorded them talking? Saying "move to point a", etc. doesn't exactly demand a whole lot of talent.

I love how Sony has no qualms about a top tier game (SOCOM) being a PSN title and giving the retail a bonus, as opposed to MS who's shoving Shadowrun at us with a 60$ price point.

    Big up's Sony.

Also in Uncharted the animation is great I don't know what bongi is talking about. It's really looking like it'll have that Naughty Dog awesome I've come to expect.

Also in Uncharted the animation is great I don't know what bongi is talking about. It's really looking like it'll have that Naughty Dog awesome I've come to expect.

i guess it's good, but it's not like the amazing stuff that every interview said it would be because of their new animation system

    or at least to me

and not to mention the disconnection between the character and the environment

Sorry to repost this guys, but has the upscaling issue been resolved on the PS3? Basically, can 720p games get upscaled to 1080i now? my CRT HDTV has a bad upscaler.

Don't think so, games are as is currently. I run 1080i on my PS3 and it always switches to 720p.
