I think New Vegas, the place, is as glorious as it can be given the engine limitations and the fact they could not produce a game that only super computers play.
Even my system drags occasionally in new vegas.
I am not so willing to just excuse it. For one they chopped it up into three sections with walls - something I am not sure if the preview videos indicated it would. For another, it really makes it feel very dead and empty, reducing the effect of entering there the first time. Places in Fallout 3 didn't feel so dead to my recollection.
they give the illusion of it being a contiguous strip, but if you watch the video you can see the cell gates.
I'm not excusing it, but you have to accept the limitations. You are pissed that its not as full as maybe it could be, but you'd be more pissed if you couldn't even run the game because of it being flooded with too many unnamed npcs

Have high luck. A luck of 7+ means you'll win at basically everything to do with Gambling pretty easily. You can roam the wastes crushing people at Caravan and then when you get to NV you'll end up with hundreds of caps. The trick is to get close to being banned and then go all in or bet ridiculous amounts. That final huge amount you win gets you banned, but well over the amount you would get playing conservatively.

Some of it though is because they did such a far and away better job with the verisimilitude in this game compared to Fallout 3 it's frustrating when they break it like this. One thing that frustrates me even more is you go into a casino and there are more guards in the fucking thing than patrons gambling. That's a huge let down.

You must share your secret. Thats a lot of caps.
Here is the secret for ultra gambling
1) get 7+ luck
2) buy 200 caps worth of chips
3) play blackjack
4) hit on anything under 10, double up on 10 or 11.
5) watch as every single time you double up on 10 you get at least a face card.
I got kicked out of every casino exactly like that. It's occasionally touch and go, but the double up button might as well be 'draw me a king'

Luck 10 run, like the guy above mentioned, then putting 200 chips at a time into the slots
Been using the Intense Training perk to build up my other SPECIAL stats as I go. I wasn't planning to do a full run with this character, but GOD DAMN that's a lot of money, so I'm just gonna go fuck around for a while, see what interesting stuff I can buy.
And here I was thinking "Well, money is harder to come by this time around"
That's precisely it. It should be my decisions and how I interact with things that determines how it goes. I don't like my RPGs forcing me into one set decision and spewing pure bullshit why perfectly logical options don't work. I can screw everyone in NV, I can aid one group or another based on my own morals/whims/character. This is what Fallout 3s main story lacked that they got right in so many of their side quests. I will cite the ghouls are such a wonderful example of where Bethsoft did an awesome job at this - but not in any kind of commentary.
Also I found utterly nothing interesting or redeeming about the main story of Fallout 3. In fact Falllout 3 is a better game when you pretend the main story doesn't exist.
We're getting there, but interactivity itself doesn't make for a good narrative. If were to have you guys vote on whether I should say, walk, bike, or drive to work, the story that results wouldn't necessarily be interesting or dramatic or funny or anything. (Unless I was mugged by a twelve year old or something I guess, but I'm sure you get the point.)
Point is, there needs to be something interesting about the non-interactive bits or you don't have a story. What do you like about New Vegas' story? Maybe it's just subjective differences, but nothing about "you got shot in the head, stood up, and then picked a faction to win the Hoover Dam" interested me. (And yeah, I know you can make anything uninteresting with a pithy little summary, I'm just saying it didn't grab me at all.)

Allow me to stress that the "breaking point"is 7 Luck. There seems to be an immense difference between 6 and 7, to the point that breaking the first two Casinos with 6 Luck I never saw a single "you feel lucky" message at blackjack, and with 7 luck I was seeing it every couple hands.
But having 7+ luck is not a machine that prints you money.
You can still lose your ass if you are stupid with your bets.

I actually really like the set up (Yes Man in particular), how it fits together logically (something that Fallout 3 failed to do so badly it wasn't even funny), the logic behind Caesar's legion surprised me so much it wasn't funny (I had wrote them off as a goofy element), the NCR being a bunch of pricks but ultimately a necessary evil for stability and such forth. It's how logically everything fits together. It isn't brilliant storytelling, but it is extremely well thought out from a verisimilitude point of view and I felt my actions made a tangible difference (unlike Fallout 3).
While in Fallout 3 there is some ham-fisted destiny crap, I have to look for someone I may/may not give a shit about (Being shot in the head is a far better motivator), then I get a decision that makes absolutely no difference (thank you Broken Steel). It's all the worst elements of RPG writing in one game.

So old school fallout types- how is the brotherhood portrayed in the older stuff? (( ie the comment was made they were goody two shoes in 3 ))
They still were pretty good, but with a critical detail.
THey protected technology. Not people.
THey literally would fuck everyone else over in order to get some amazing tech. For example, the aliens in the FO3 DLC? They would sell over the ENTIRE NCR just to get some good tech from them.
They were very much about the turtling though. They had their bunkers, but they didn't go much beyond them, frankly. Small expeditions to bring in more tech or parts, but that was it. They also didn't seem to develop much. I think the only countering idea was that one young squire made a hardening agent for powered armor in FO2.
I'm not sure that's exactly true. It's been a whole since I played 1, but while they fancied themselves as having a Keeper of the Lore sort of position in the wastes and generally kept to themselves, I'm pretty certain they weren't overt dicks about it to the point of siezing other people's tech and the like. They were also pretty deep into R&D as well, since they had their own superior varient of Combat Armor and the Super Sledge is attributed to them, and if you talk to some of the techs at their bunker they talk about new weapon prototypes and the like.
I know their power was sort of waning in FO2, but the one dude of theirs you met didn't come off as a real prick, either. Makes me wonder what particular endings and what events behind the scenes took place that led to the real warhawks siezing control.
Yeah, I don't buy that either. At most, the BoS would use the presence of malevolent aliens as justification for their previous tech-hoarding dickery.
"Wow, good thing we did all that legwork rounding up this pre-war tech and learned how to use it and train others in its use, right guys? It'd be a real shame if nobody was around to organize humanity's best assets into a formal line of defense against this invading force."

Obsidian *deserves* FO4 for their brilliant work on New Vegas, Bethesda doesn't deserve shit.

TES > The "New" fallouts (3/NV)
Another pro tip - NV may not be better than FO3.
[INT 9] I SEE YOU ARE FIGHTING THE GOOD FIGHT WITH UR WORDS. DERF GONNA HERF.
I can't believe anyone, ever, in the world, actually believes what you typed. I mean, I know people do, because those silly geese are in this thread, but it's hard for me to actually believe humanity has fallen to the depths this opinion seems to belie.
Seriously, NV is better than fallout 3+DLC in every way. It builds an internally consistent world, interconnected with the GOOD fallout games (1/2) and heals every bit of bitter disappointment I had about fallout 3 (aside from the perspective, but hey FIRST PERSON IS THE FUTURE AMIRITE, NOT AT ALL OBNOXIOUS TO NAVIGATE A LABYRINTH OF A VAULT FROM THAT PERSPECTIVE.)
Bethesda did a terrible job with fallout lore(DERF HERF 200 YEARS LATER NARP, BROTHER HOOD OF STEEL HAS PALADINS, GOOD GUYS!!!! LULZ CANIBAL SUPER MUTANTS, EXPLODING CARS NARF) and I had all but written off the series, Obsidian made van buren mk II, and after making Bethesda's fallout wannabe game look so utterly stupid by comparison, in so many ways, I can't honestly believe anyone wouldn't want them making the future fallout games.
But hey, some people are silly geese WITH AWFUL TASTE.
I dont think you could make your point in a less effective way.

I liked the quest because it has the best "Evil" ending with High Science.
Incidentally, I hate the Karma system in NV more than Fallout 3. Why? Because my cannibalistic, murderous mad scientist has PALADIN fucking Karma.
How the hell do I be evil? I gain Karma for killing the legion, the Fiends and other assholes who try to kill me first. While the only way to lose it is to massacre NCR troopers who are a helpful resource and control many of the most interesting scientific sites I want to raid for all their stuff? It just drives me bananas, because despite the fact I have no morals whatsoever (stealing, cannibalising and using a certain place to fry every NCR soldier in sight) I just can't get bad Karma.
WHAT AM I DOING WRONG?
Oh and the various nuclear and giant laser beam based atrocities I have already committed.

All right, that's cool. Personally, I found that the knowledge that I could have just as easily picked the other side and be fighting on the other side of the Dam in the finale to take a lot of the oomph out of the finale and ending. There's just no tension, no sense of cause and effect, no meaningful ending to things for me.
I felt more like I was playing a character when I had to search for my Dad and all of that stuff, it made things feel more like a story, even if it was sorta ham fisted (and really illogical at the end), at least there was something there.

The thing that I think Fallout 3 does way better than New Vegas is explore prewar society and the causes and roots of the destruction. In some way I feel that captures the Spirit of Fallout more than the set pieces present in New Vegas like NCR and BoS.

You also have to realize that post apocalyptic morality is alien to real world morality? I dunno.
I've literally killed everyone in certain towns in this game as well. I'm like an exterminator of people in the wastes. Like I got a new plasma rifle, so I tested it out on one of the locals to see what would happen sort of thing.
And yet I cannot seem to get negative Karma. The game is just "Oh Aegeri you murdering, lying, stealing and cannibalising asshole you. Have some more positive Karma!"
Personally I think it's more the Karma gains you get for killing Legion/Fiends and certain other factions are so high that it offsets most of the other shit I do. The Karma loss for stealing/eating peoples corpses must be very trivial.
Gentlemen, and ladies, I have a few questions about this game if someone would be so kind as to answer them.
I'm playing a stealthy guy in hardcore mode, and I'm trying to figure out where to focus my skill points (besides the obvious areas of sneak/lockpick etc).
- Should I go for melee or unarmed? Also, does unarmed kill things or just knock them out? For example sometimes I wanna rob a shop but not necessarily kill the shopkeeper.
- Laser weapons or guns? I'm thinking guns, and I know it probably doesn't matter much, but I'm interested in your opinions. I don't want a bunch of different weapon types when ammo has weight.
- Is survival really that useful, or can I pretty much get by by raiding fridges, killing wildlife etc?
- Speech seems pretty useful, speech get?
(Also if it makes any difference, I'm roleplaying as a neutral-ish character motivated mostly by self-interest, who does not take shit from people but also has a few moral boundaries. Basically this guy:
I almost always play as a good guy in RPGs but for some reason this game makes me want to be a badass)
I'm not sure how anybody can really be disappointed by how dead and underpopulated The Strip is and whatnot. I mean, sure, it's disappointing in the sense that it's not ideal, but I for one cannot be disappointed because I didn't expect anything better. How could I?
I mean, you guys have all played Oblivion, right? Where the market district of the capital city of the empire at noon has like a grand total of a dozen people in it?
This is, simply speaking, why New Vegas just has to be the last stand of the Gamebryo engine.

I mean, you guys have all played Oblivion, right? Where the market district of the capital city of the empire at noon has like a grand total of a dozen people in it?
This is, simply speaking, why New Vegas just has to be the last stand of the Gamebryo engine.
