While I processed and understood the comic the first time, it doesn't seem very well presented and it does seem easy to get wrong.

In the "correct" understanding, the first two panels are a moment-to-moment transition (the second panel shows the result of tycho throwing his hand forward from the previous panel), and the camera has panned up to show what's above them.

In an "incorrect" understanding, the first panel establishes... something... and the second panel appears to show a chandelier falling on Tycho. (I don't know if this was the issue Rei_ had or not, since discussion has focused on figuring-out-it's-Kinect.)

Issues with the art for distinguishing those two cases:

    - the background gradient makes it hard to tell that the camera has been panned up (it looks like the gradient has moved down, but not by enough, and it's pretty subtle, whereas it would be overt if there were actual visible stuff in the background)

    - I don't think PA normally uses moment-to-moment action sequences, so in combination with the first issue it's really easy to get suckered into a "wrong" interpretation. (I might be using the wrong name for this transition type, I didn't bother cracking open UC.)

So, yeah, I think it's plausible this will be another comic that a fair number of people will be confused by or at least have to read a couple times to 'get'. I.e., another PA narrative art failure.

I've been starring at this comic for 10 minutes now. I think that I gazed upon the eyes of the mad god himself. His uncarring visage is devouring my sanity.

Is the entire comic just one establishing shot?

It's part of a longer story arc.

    scene: restaurant

The kid and Dad and in one booth, they aren't important to the story.

The guy and girl on the left are dating and the two people on the right are the girl's parents.

It is their 14th date, where he meets her parents.

    You're missing the subtleties.

The kids smile is unfocused, his hands are on table like he's waiting for something.
The older guy next to him has his eyes closed and is telling a story. Her looks like he enjoys himself. Where does he have his left hand?
The frame above him is empty.
The guy in the middle is clearly uncomfortable, while the girl sitting next to him is grinning madly.
There are similarities with the couple on the other side. The color of their clothes, their hair.
The women is laughing, but why? What is up with her hair and what is that line above her right arm?
The guy next to her is starring into the void space. he doesn't look at anyone and yet he appears to be happy.
Look at the pattern on his clothes, first it seems normal but then you notice that something is very wrong. It shouldn't be that way, it couldn't be that way.
Is that his mouth or his chin?

I know I'm a bad person, but I was hoping the crisis Munroe is going through would bring about a return of the random debilitatingly depressing emocomics from earlier years.
