SECRET SUPERMANS 2010 - Give freely of your heart

EDIT: SECRET SUPERMANS 2010 ARE NOW OVER!

all_star_superman_hat.jpg

Oh, hello there, friends. I was just thinking about one of my most beloved customs: gift-giving for the winter holidays. It's such a lovely tradition that even Batman approves:
Batman.jpg

Say, friends, shall we brighten our fellows' winter months with gifts given freely of our hearts? In keeping with an old Kryptonian tradition, we can assign gift givers and recipients through random chance, giving us an opportunity to learn more about each other, drawing us closer as a community.

We are, unfortunately, getting a late start. Some time ago, the avatar of evil, the god-being Darkseid manifested on Earth, and the dark density of his thoughtflesh pulled in on the edges of time, drawing it closer, denser. Moments compressed to the point where you could hold them in your hands. Several months of the calendar sped by faster than you could be aware of them, leaving us in this predicament - but we shall not let those dark days destroy our spirits or our holidays.

SCHEDULE:
Let those who wish to participate announce so in this thread - as well as send me, Secret Superman, private messages with their physical mail addresses and other delivery info - by December the 3rd. Remember also that, as we have worthy participants all around the globe, your Secret Superman may be in a different country than you. Please give your full, international address, the one that a sender from another country might use.

On or soon after December 3rd, I will feed the names of everyone participating (that has already entered their name) into my crystalline computer, now upgraded with the SecretSantaPRO module, and let everyone know - again, by private message - whom they are to bestow gifts upon.

Please make sure that if you are participating, you put up a post letting people know what comics you already have, so that you are not given something you already own. If you have any specific preferences, or perhaps comics that you never wish to receive under any circumstances, please include this info in the post as well.

All gifts must go out by January 30th. Even accounting for increased busyness during the holiday season, this gives us a month and a half to obtain and send out presents. Of course, the sooner you send yours out, the sooner you can make someone happy.

If any parts of this schedule present serious problems for you, do let me know.

GIFT GUIDE: There are no explicit rules, save that we shall endeavor to keep to the theme of this forum, and give each other comic book-related presents. It's fine if you want to throw an action figure or a t-shirt into the package, but the core of your present should be a trade paperback, or perhaps a number of singles. I think that it is fair to institute a "$10-minimum" limit on these gifts; a trade will cover that amount, and it makes it more likely that no one comes away with a poor gift.

Be warned: if you sign up, yet choose not to send out a present, we will know you for who you are. You will be barred from Secret Superman events of future years, and you will be shunned as the villain you so clearly are. Do not be that villain.

Oh, and don't worry about getting me a gift; I have everything.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some gifts to deliver.

I'm in for this. I'll PM you later once I get my parent's address down (I don't trust packages getting sent to my place)

Although leaving signups to December 16th is way too long. Everyone last year signed up within like a week. I'd say leave signups until December 3rd at the latest, really.

I have considered this, and I agree. This community has a steady core of regular contributors; they will almost certainly see this thread before the 3rd.

The OP has been updated to reflect this change.

I will endeavor to make everyone's lives easy.

Although, if we only have, say, two people in England, it seems a little boring to just have them send gifts to each other. I will meditate upon this in the sun-gardens of Raal, the wildlife reserve planet of the Ogon Beta system.

I understand, dear friends, that times can be hard, and it is often difficult to justify an engagement like this, but I do want to remind you that, for example, the first volume of Chew is a fairly modest $10, and will be the best book the recipient has read all year.

Furthermore, you yourself will receive something in return (for even if we end up with brigands who don't send out gifts, I am sure that we will arrange something to deliver you a present of some sort), which will likely cover your costs. Not the same as money, true, but if it's something you were going to buy yourself anyway, it's more or less even.

Edit: Please don't misunderstand; I'm not trying to coerce anyone into doing something they cannot afford, or do not wish to do! I am simply providing some arguments.

No need to ask permission to join in on the festivities, friend! All are welcome (save, perhaps, those who - in previous years - signed up but did not send out a gift)!

This is a point that I want to make clear: this is something for all of us. It doesn't matter what country you're in, it doesn't matter if you can only afford to send a cheap trade and not three Absolutes and an autographed drawing by a top-tier artist. All that matters is that you want to share your love of comics with other members of our community (and, indeed, have some of that love shared with you). If you want to sign up, please sign up! We'll figure out and overcome any and all difficulties.

Any of the top three I'd be extremely happy with http://amzn.com/w/1Y7RTU8MLF3SO (sorted by priority)

    Trades I have:
    Chew v1-2
    All of Scott Pilgrim
    Atomic Robo v1-3
    Thor and the Warriors Four
    Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man v1-2
    Spider-Man: The Other HC
    Back in Black (both HC)
    Watchmen
    Dark Knight Returns

I have others that I want, but I think my family is picking up a bunch of Batman trades for me for Xmas, so I'm not putting em on my list. I can't wait until others put up lists as invariably more titles will be mentioned that pique my interest. Also so I can be assigned and see what I can get for someone! Get those lists people!

Ok, so here's my ridiculous list, subdivided into 8 separate wishlists:

    Marvel - http://www.amazon.com/gp/registry/wishlist/308SHGJDPUOHK
    Dark Horse - http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/18SM9VITIKJ1M/
    DC - http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/3J6ZTTHQHMIAV/
    Marvel Essentials - http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/3CWSXPP7EZ8ZC/
    Other - http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/JNYOFBWPUOB6/
    Ultimate Marvel - http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/2WZW6MGLJ7QET/
    Vertigo - http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/1D72JXZDJ8GHS/
    Wildstorm - http://www.amazon.com/wishlist/2K60VTNQ5VSLO/

Also, I'd prefer something not from Marvel, as I spend most of my comics money with them.

Pretty much every comic I own is Marvel, and I have most of the stuff I'd really like. Outside that anything but All-Star Superman, Invincible and Preacher is game (those are the only non-Marvel books I own). As far as what I like, I really prefer superhero stuff and I like it to be mature yet light hearted, something like Invincible or Ultimate Spider-Man. I'm not really into writers like Millar (Frank and Mark) and Ellis' darker works, that said I enjoy darker stuff (Moon Knight and Daredevil for example) just not mean spirited or juvenile violence porn/dick-measuring contests. Also, I am British but I usually prefer American superhero comics, that said though I enjoyed Judge Dredd and Nemesis: Warlock in moderation. Apart from that suprise me. My all time favourite likes (in no particular order) are...

    The Sentry original mini series
    Ultimate Spider-Man
    Invincible
    Immortal Iron Fist
    Moon Knight
    Nova
Guardians of the Galaxy (DnA cosmic in general really)
    Secret Warriors
    Brubaker's Daredevil
    Incredible Hercules
    Captain Britain and MI-13
    JMS and Kieron Gillen's Thor
    Thor: The Mighty Avenger
    All-Star Superman

    Thanks.

EDIT: Sorry late edit here, but it might help, I also own pretty much every Avengers book after the New Avengers was started and all the T-Bolts after Ellis' run. Sorry about this being late!
