OOC Star Wars the Dark Times
Page_1-1.jpg
Bothan.jpg
The Republic has fallen. The Jedi are all but extinct. The Sith rule the galaxy, and the Empire tightens it's grip on star systems with no one to oppose it. No one that is, except for you.

You are among the first rebels to take up the fight against the Empire. Relying on guerilla warfare, pure nerve, and more than a small amount of luck you do everything possible to thwart efforts of the Empire.

Coming from every walk of life you first rebels and are driven by any number of motivations. Perhaps you have noble aspirations, hoping to bring down the Empire you are willing sacrifice your very life. Maybe you are driven by fear, the fear of losing you loved ones, your world, and your freedom. You may even be one of those who see the rebel cause as a chance to make a profit.

Whatever your reasons as a rebel have chosen to stand against the Empire. Only time will tell if your actions were those of a hero or traitor.

What is this?
This is a Star Wars Saga game set in the Dark Times, which were just after the end of the Clone Wars. This is before the Rebel Alliance came into existence. At this point rebels are scattered cells of undertrained, underarmed, and overwhelmed cannon fodder. It's going to be up to you to help change that.

Can I play?
Absolutely. I'm hoping for a group of 3-5 players to volunteer their services for this little experiment. If you have an interest all you need to do is whip up a character sheet and post it in this thread by November 30th, 8 PM EST.

What are the guidelines for character creation?
*32 point buy system
*Level 1
*You can roll stats as outlined in the core rulebook.
*No Ewoks
*Please include a some sort of a backstory of your character.
*You do not need to roll/pay for equipment licenses.

How often do I need to post?
Please try and post at least once per day. If something occurs that prevent you from doing so fine, I'm realistic and I do understand that sometimes lives are too hectic to plan for everything. If you can't post for more than a day or two though let me know what the situation is.

Rolls
You can do your rolls on orokos, invisible castle, or any other online dice roller of your choosing.

The Horseshoe Rule
The Horseshoe Rule is named in honor of the GM who has been running the Clone Wars campaign on this forum for three years.

Simply put the rule is that your actions can, and more than likely will, change the history of the Star Wars universe. For example were you to kill Darth Vader…that will probably have a direct effect on the war between the Rebels and the Empire. Just probably though. You are not going to be puppets of the universe we're playing in, your are the puppet masters. Shape it in whatever way you see fit.

House Rules
1. All PC characters of a species that cannot speak Basic receive a translator as part of their starting equipment. This device is able to translate their native language into Basic.

2. Rolling a 1 at any time means you fail in that attempt, whether it is a skill check or a combat roll. This may also result in unfavorable circumstances being added to the situation as a result.

Do you have a delorean at least? Regardless the due date for character submission is actually December 4th, 8 PM EST. Apologies for the mistake.

As of this moment there are no limits placed on which books are available for character creation. I have Saga, Force Unleashed, and Rebellion Era on hand so those are preferred sources but they are not required.

Definitely interested, although I'm curious about how much space-faring you think might happen. Just wondering how useless it would be to roll a pilot.

This is definitely not for every GM...but if you're interested in handholding someone through playing without a book, I'd be more than happy to play.

Oh, and I recommend you change the thread to title to something like "[SW Saga] The Dark Times- Now Recruiting!", just to make sure people see it.

I've taught a few people the basics for the one-shot I ran a few weeks back, never attempted to do so over the net but if you're game for it so am I. Plus I've found the Sagas community on here to be really friendly and more than willing to help new players so I'm sure we can get you sorted.

Trying to come up with thoughts around a Mon Calamari Engineer of some sort.

How combat-heavy is this game likely to be, Sakutian? I guess that'll help determine how specialized he ends up being...

I'm very interested in this! I'm out of state until the end of the weekend though, so I can't roll up a sheet until then. I very much would like to play though.

So what are the rules on playing a Force Sensitive in this? I was thinking of playing an orphaned Padawan of some sort.

For the record the fact that this is Thanksgiving weekend is a large part of the reason for our prolonged recruitment. Turkey comas can take a while to recover from.

    Now for some Answers!

JacquesCousteau- I forgot to mention I have a special house rule about all PC characters who are not able to speak Basic. They receive, as a free piece of equipment, a translator device that is capable of translating one language into Basic for them. This worked out pretty well for me the last two times I used it.

I love Wookies by the way, glad to see that someone is choosing to make one.

psolms- If your character happened to be a smuggler, or a pilot of some kind, then yes I would give him or her a free ship. It's not going to be a great ship but you will have something to get you started. Let me know what sort of ship you were thinking of and we'll figure it out.

El Skid- An Engineer would be handy certainly. There is going to be combat because...well you know Rebels tend to blow stuff up. If the party chooses to approach missions and scenarios with stealth and guile they will certainly find an Engineer who can use technomancy to their benefit.

Heir- Force sensitives, or even a full blown Jedi, are welcome. I am going to let you in on a pet peeve of mine though. I hate that so many Jedi survived Order 66. The list of survivors seems to grow ever longer and it irks me. Of course some Jedi and their Padawans survived though and I would be happy to have one on board.

    Dewlanrirr
    (Dewy? Ha. Anyway.)

Bio: Dewlanrirr was reared on the Wookiee home planet Kashyyyk where the young Wookiee excelled in the physical arena as a skilled hunter. His accomplishments acquired him little renown, however, due to his constrained and modest nature.

A fateful encounter with an exiled Wookiee mystic changed this when a greater destiny was revealed to him. Convinced that he was to protect a sacred Wookiee artifact from a coming invasion, Dewlanrirr stole the artifact and fled Kashyyyk mere weeks before its subjugation under the Galactic Empire.

Dishonored among his unknowning brethren and nearly out of credits, Dewlanrirr hopes to survive for the day when he will return the artifact to its rightful home among the wroshyr forests of Kashyyyk.

EDIT: Tried to find a Wookiee YouTube video but a lot of them are pretty creepy.

Sounds good. We are starting with lvl 1 characters right? I'll probably go with a younger padawan then...maybe one who is 17-18 years of age.

The other option I might go with is a young adult who washed out of the training. Maybe wasn't chosen by a Jedi Master and ended up quitting.

Will probably go with a padawan though since this will by my first full game. Don't feel like multi-classing just yet.

I think my character might be a good candidate to be paired up with someone else's character. He/she is just a kid who has very little understanding of the universe outside of the Jedi Temple.

His survival will have probably been based more on luck than anything else at this point. I dunno. Wish I had my book so I could start rolling up some stats. :(

Yeah Heir we're starting at level 1. I like the idea of a young padawan who has been cut off from his/her master. Sorry I don't know of a good online too for Saga, if you need something from one of the books though I can probably help you out.

    Oren's backstory:

There is no emotion, there is peace.

There is no passion, there is serenity...

"There is no money, there is hunger" Oren chuckled to himself as his stomach interrupted his reverie. "It's only been 2 days since your last meal. Master Yoda would have told us 'Food you do not need, the Force, is all one needs, '" he said to his grumbling mid section.

Oren sat at the back of a rundown cantina in the lower levels of Coruscant. He stuck out even amongst the type of clientèle one would find in the seedy bar, as his clothes were tattered and dirty...only a barely pulled off mind trick got him past the bouncer at the door. Now he sat in a dark corner, alone and destitute.

As Oren debated with his stomach on whether it would be ok to try and Mind Trick the bartender for some food, he started to reflect back on the past few months. Only half a year ago he had been a naive, but promising Padawan at the Jedi Temple. The heroes Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi had defeated Count Dooku and saved the Chancellor. The war was all but won, as only Greivious remained.

Oren's master, Jedi Knight Quin Quix had taken him out on a practice mission just a few days later. It was to be a test run for the teenager before he and Quin would participate in their first real assignment...most likely a peace keeping mission to one of the former CIS worlds. By some sort of dumb luck, it had been during that mission that some unknown assailant lead a division of clone troopers to the Jedi Temple and slaughtered nearly everyone in there.

Since then, Oren and Quin had been in hiding in the lower levels of Coruscant. However it wasn't long before groups of Jedi hunters were scouring the newly formed "Galactic Empire" for any remaining Jedi. They had eluded detection for a few days, but just three days ago they were discovered and ambushed by 5 troopers lead by one of the Emperor's new inquisitors. Oren had been in another room of the homeless shelter they were hiding in when the troops stormed in. Quin fought admirably, killing all 5 troopers and wounding the inquisitor before he was killed. Oren, to his great shame, ran away at the mental urging of his master. Even while he ran, he felt the inquisitor in his mind. And he felt his amusement, as if he was saying "You're not worth the effort. Enjoy what remains of your pathetic life." Oren ran to exhaustion, and collapsed in an alleyway.

Now it was just a matter of waiting for death to come, either through starvation, the frequent crime in the area, or from another sweep of Jedi hunters. Oren didn't dare try and go to the surface, as that would mean certain death on his own. He had no friends, no experience outside of the temple, and no hope.

An old, worn service droid broke his thoughts. "Huh, what?" Oren asked. "I apologize sir. I was asking if you would care for some food," then looking him up and down "...or perhaps some soap and water?"

"Damn, looks like using a mind trick is out of the question," he thought. Oren pulled some of his last remaining credits from his pocket and gave them to the droid. "As long as it's warm and filling, I don't care what you bring. Thank you."

Oren again started to stare off into nothing...knowing there was very little hope left for him...

    IC Example Post:
Oren Keth again found himself in one of the many halfway houses that populated the Corscant lower levels. A Bendu Monk had spotted him shivering, injured and exhausted, and immediately led him to the shelter. He had tended to his wounds and given him some kind of hot soup that seemed to immediately restore some of Oren's strength.

Now as Oren laid there, looking at the bottom of the bunk above him, he reflected on the events that nearly got him killed.

He had been eating the "food" served to him at what passed for a cantina several blocks away. Oren had to stop himself from eating it all in seconds, even if the food was rank. He hadn't eaten in days, and knew if he ate too fast the contents of his stomach would be visiting the floor in a rather spectacular fashion. He relished the spoiled food...treating it as if it were an exquisite feast. For a brief time, he was no longer a fugitive being hunted by an entire government. He was just a normal kid, enjoying a normal meal.

That illusion was quickly shattered by a scream from across the room. A young twi'lek girl had been forcibly grabbed by a trio of thugs. Her companion, whoever he was, lay crumpled on the floor, blood gushing from a wound in his torso. They started to drag her towards a door at the back of the cantina, as everyone else in the room pretended they didn't notice. The reality of the lower levels was that there was no law other than what you enforced with your own will and strength. Groups of gangs and thugs fought for control of sections of the region, and the people who tried to avoid the bloodshed tended to be caught in the middle of it all the time. What was happening now was really no different. The thugs saw something they wanted, and they would take it because no one would try and stop them. Those who did try would end up like the poor girl's companion.

As she was dragged away, she looked pleadingly for someone to help her. Nearly all the patrons kept their heads down, pretending not to even notice what was going on. Oren, however, watched the whole thing from his table. He had no intention of helping her. He knew he needed to stay hidden and survive...helping others would only expose himself to whomever or whatever was hunting his kind. But as the girl scanned the room, her eyes met Oren's. He could see the absolute terror and hopelessness in her eyes. She probably saw much of the same in his...as that is all he had felt for months now. Her gaze was broken as one of the thugs slapped her to quiet her, and she was dragged out the back door.

In what was probably just a couple of seconds, but what felt like an eternity to Oren, he argued with himself about what to do. In the end, he convinced himself that a Jedi was still a Jedi, no matter where he would find himself. Oren quickly got up and ran through the back door, finding himself in an alleyway with the group of thugs walking away..their prize in tow.

Trying his best to summon up the Force, he commanded them to "Let her go!". He wasn't very good at mind tricks yet, and it was very hard to use the power over more than one mind at a time. Indeed, only a fully trained Knight would probably be able to pull it off. Not surprisingly, they did no such thing. However, he did have their attention, as they were walking menacingly back towards him, vibroblades and daggers already in hand.

"Walk away kid, or you'll find a hole in your stomach like her father did back there," one of them said. He was grinning, but there was no warmth in his eyes.

"Let. Her. Go." Oren focused all his will on the one who spoke to him. Amazingly, it worked! The man dropped the girl, fear in his eyes, and took off running. Oren grinned to himself, amazed that he had pulled it off. He was so distracted that he didn't even notice the second thug plunge his dagger deep into Oren's stomach. That is, he didn't notice until the blinding pain shot up into his head. He reeled back, shock and horror in his eyes as he looked down at his bleeding torso, and then back up at the two remaining men, walking slowly towards him intending to finish him off.

Without thinking, Oren ignited his lightsaber and swung wildly and weakly at them. There was very little skill in his moves, as only his instinct to survive guided his actions. It was enough though. The thug nearest him lost an arm. The one next to him was not so lucky, the blade biting deeply into his side, nearly severing him in two. The one who only lost an arm quickly took off running, disappearing into the shadows.

Oren was hurt badly, and needed medical attention. But he was not dying...at least not yet. He turned off his lightsaber and looked down to the twi'lek girl. She looked back up to him, eyes wide with fear and terror. She screamed as she scrambled to her feet and ran back into the cantina. He could not understand her language, but he distinctly heard "Jeedai" somewhere in there.

"Karking hell!" he muttered. He had saved her, but whatever propaganda the Empire was filling its citizens' heads with about the Jedi had done its job. Oren took off running, knowing more roving bands of hunters would be coming now.

Hour later, he had nearly passed out in a rain gutter. He had lost a lot of blood, and knew that unconsciousness (and eventually death) were not far away. It had only been the fortuitous arrival of the Bendu monk that had saved him.

Oren Keth had somehow survived his first real battle. He had killed for the first time, something he hoped he would never have to do. However, rather by dumb luck, or something more innate, he had saved a life...which at the heart of things one could argue is the primary purpose of being a Jedi. Oren took comfort in that...the first positive feeling he had felt in months...

    Credits roll:

    Credit Roll (3d4=6x250 = 1500 credits)

    Equipment:

    1. Lightsaber - comes with character
    2. Comlink - 25 cr

For RP purposes I'm going to say he lost most of the rest either through theft or was conned out of it. Let's say he was 200 credits left.

Edit: Much love to Arc for digging up a good picture.

    Backstory:
From a young age, Kudak was fascinated with electronics. As a baby he took to electronic toys, gadgets and later computers like a Calamari to water... And unlike most of his species didn't take to water at all. He learned to play with, then program, then take apart and fix pretty much everything mechanical he could lay his hands on, and at an exceptionally young age was hired to work in the Mon Calamari shipyards. For a couple of years he was content, building, tweaking and improving on a variety of starships... until the Imperials took over.

The betrayal and annexation of his homeworld did NOT sit well with Kudak, nor did the Imperials' horrible treatment of his people. They were treated as a slave race, belittled and denied basic rights due of any sentient species.

But Kudak was well placed to fight back. As the shipyards were taken over, they gradually found they were constantly short of vital supplies, despite having ordered plenty. A distressingly high percentage of the ships produced in the shipyards contained subtle flaws that allowed them to pass inspection, but malfunctioned or worse after a few weeks of use. There were a few explosions... And then Kudak was running for his life, as one of his plant-mates spotted him tampering with a lightspeed drive and boasted he would tell the overseer in exchange for the favour it would get him with their masters.

Kudak couldn't allow that, and after a brief tussle the Calamari traitor was dead. A still-young Kudak hotwired a starship and left the planet to seek his fortune... And to search for a way to free his planet from the clutches of the Empire.

    Level up!
Level 2(scoundrel): Kudak gains +1 attack, 1d6=2 HP, Feat: Skill focus: Mechanics.
Level 3(scoundrel): Kudak gains +1 attack, HP gain for lvl 3 (1d6=6)
Level 4(scoundrel): Kudak gains +1 attack, feat: Skill training (Use Computer), Level 4 HP bonus (1d6=5) HP, +1 Dex, +1 Wis
Level 7(all scoundrel) Kudak gains +2 attack, +1 defences, +1 skills HP for level up from 4-7 (3d6=14), Feat: retrain Use Computer to Starship Designer, New Feat: Scavanger. New Talents: Knack (Mechanics), Lucky Stop (negate damage that would take you to 0 hp 1/encounter)

Not a problem, I'm still new to things too so I have to ask questions about basic stuff more than a few times. Never be afraid to ask questions.

skid, as a mon calimari, if perception is a trained skill, you get skill focus: perception as a bonus feat. which is why your perception is +10 when you have +0 in wis.

all im saying is, you should add that to your feat list.
