A private company launched a spacecraft into orbit and then, in a historic first, guided it back to Earth on Wednesday in a bold test for NASA that could lead to the first commercial space station supply run next year and eventual astronaut rides.
This is pretty cool news. I honestly didn't expect them to make it this far this quickly.
The craft was supposed to partner up with Venus Express (ESA) to perform an in-depth study of the Venusian atmosphere, the outcomes of which could have been really, really interesting. I mean, understanding Venus's hell climate could have implications for greenhouse effects on Earth, our understanding of the formation of habitable atmosphere on rocky planets in extrasolar systems and possibly even terraforming Mars, so the failure to make orbit this pass is a bit disappointing.
If anyones got a better link to explain what went wrong, I'd love to read it.

and orbital isn't in the run for a crew module, but we have plans on the board for cargo modules that are in direct competition with the dragon program, as the taurus II is with the falcon 9 launch vehicle. but we'll be launching from wallops island.

This makes me excited for no rational reason I can explain. I think it's the grown up version of unwrapping presents at Christmas. I have a box! With colours on it! Fuck knows what's in this coloured box, but it's mine and I will have it!
fun facts: even though New Horizons is the fastest thing that has ever been launched from earth and is about half way to pluto, both voyagers' gravity assists mean that NH will never catch up
