I would say the Number 1 reason that calvin and hobbes is my favorite comic is that Bill Watterson was not confined to panel layout, or even illustration style. My most favorite strips of his often have no panels at all. Change of pace is always welcome in my book.
Fletch, I agree and disagree with ninjai, and certainly worship Watterson and appreciate how differently he uses space and is unconstrained by one formula, but there's also something to be said, I think, for seeing what you can do within the confines of a formula. Like, this last Antics more or less is still the same 2x3 panel grid but you've gotten a little kinkier with how you've divided it up. As a reader I enjoy seeing artists adhere to their same-old while playing with it; it's something I always notice and go "squee" at.
Related, the break in the central gutter space on this one, where the diagonally divided panels pull away from the grid, bugs me a little bit; I think it'd be less distracting if that right one were mushed over and the diagonals brought back flush with the above ones.
I love this one! Panels 3 and 8 both had me cackling like a mad man in my cubicle.
I like the panel experimentation as well, but I agree with squid about the bottom row. I think the layout would be more appealing if that bottom row lined up with the others.

Is that a split panel at the end there or is he supposed to be behind a wall? It looks like a split panel to me, which makes me wonder why they couldn't fit in the same panel. If it's a wall then it makes me wonder why they were all of a sudden in seperate rooms when they were just standing next to each other talking.
I do agree with adam though that the last panel is a little confusing to the eye (at first it looked like a split panel to me too, but I see it as Fletcher coming from behind a wall/doorway).
I never even assumed it was split panel and instantly thought that A) Time had passed and he was behind a wall. What might have promoted your point Fletch is making the wall 3D and making the wall in the background the same color but darker as the one in the foreground. I did a little crappy draw-over, I hope you don't mind!

i am really enjoying it though! i just wish the "secret" levels didn't have lives, they seem kind of pointless because you can just try again anyway but you have to way for a million years to restart the level
but anyway yes it is pretty much my favourite kind of game ever!

A length of time has passed, I think. The background gets darker/stars come out behind Fletcher as his little braincells grind away.
