This is kind of old. We talked about it in my first level bio course when they first did the transplant.

    However there is now: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/8272113.stm

also some other promising stuff on the wiki.

Can't see the article right now but if it's anything like what I think has happened here then this is a prohibitively expensive, dangerous procedure with a tiny success rate

But maybe it is as good as it sounds!!! that would rock

Yeah I remember this story from when they first did the procedure on the patient a few years ago

It's very expensive, and a very risky procedure, but it's proof of concept which is a very important step.

Oh, the other week in chem lab we were recording the smells of some chemical and my partner goes
    "What's it smell like"
    me: "eggs"
    her: "AIDs?!"
    Me: "eggs!"

How did she think I could smell aids?

She said it with a lower-case s? How silly of her.

Actually in traditional bone marrow transplants they use chemotherapy and radiation to fucking destroy ever bit of marrow in your body then inject the donor cells.

A newer style called a mini-allogenic transplant uses less chemo and radiation and hope the new marrow will kill off your old cancerous marrow. This doesn't always work, but is much less likely to kill you from the transplant procees.

No, no, no, only getting some of your marrow changed instead of all. What's all this about AIDS?

Here is the abstract in case anyone is interested:
    ABSTRACT

HIV entry into CD4+ cells requires interaction with a cellular receptor, generally either CCR5 or CXCR4. We have previously reported the case of an HIV-infected patient in whom viral replication remained absent despite discontinuation of antiretroviral therapy after transplantation with CCR532/32 stem cells. However, it was expected that the long-lived viral reservoir would lead to HIV rebound and disease progression during the process of immune reconstitution. In the present study, we demonstrate successful reconstitution of CD4+ T cells at the systemic level as well as in the gut mucosal immune system following CCR532/32 stem cell transplantation, while the patient remains without any sign of HIV infection. This was observed although recovered CD4+ T cells contain a high proportion of activated memory CD4+ T cells, i.e. the preferential targets of HIV, and are susceptible to productive infection with CXCR4-tropic HIV. Furthermore, during the process of immune reconstitution, we found evidence for the replacement of long-lived host tissue cells with donor-derived cells indicating that the size of the viral reservoir has been reduced over time. In conclusion, our results strongly suggest that cure of HIV has been achieved in this patient.

The latter is the one I am familiar with because a friend of mine went through it. The state you're in before the transplant is pretty terrifying so doctors recommended the other one.

It worked for her, so that was neat.

The transplant is only meant to be enough to get things going, not top you up right away, so it can be pretty rough if you lose it all from what I hear.

A guy I worked with had to (and still does, I think) travel to Texas on several different occasions for treatment, so I'm guessing his was the newer method as well.
