Hey guys looking for some recommendations. I know next to nothing about hip-hop, one of my friends is really into it and has introduced me to some artists that I like a lot. I'd love for you guys to suggest some stuff, classics as well as overlooked

Love: MF DOOM, Blue Scholars, Cunninlynguists, Common Market
Really don't like: Eminem, Snoop Dogg

I've been reading through this thread, seems like the Roots will be right up my street, where's best to start with them? Also is there a book about hip-hop you'd particularly recommend?

Seems we have similar tastes in hip hop. Some stuff you might like:

    Blackalicious
    Aceyalone (and Freestyle Fellowship)
    Jurrassic 5
Del the Funky Homosapien and his various projects (Deltron 3030, Hieroglyphics)
    Gang Starr and related (Jazzmatazz)

I'd suggest making a Pandora station based on something you like and go from there. You sure aren't going to hear anything along the lines of what you like on the radio.

I do not think I have ever seen anything of Rah Digga freestyling or performing live (just checked out her work back in the Flipmode Squad days and now with Classic). I will have to check out what else is out there. Thanks for the link.

Also, I will fourth the Lupe Fiasco recommendation.

All the suggestions to pots+pans look good to me I would also add Lootpack, Soul Position, and Murs. I'm also curious what it is about Snoop and Em you don't like. Because I'd like to recommend Crooked I, who I've been bumping much lately, as well but I suspect it's an antipathy to gangsta rap (which isn't really where I'd put Em but that's a whole other discussion). However if it's something else, which now that I think about it might be hard to define for someone new to hip-hop, I'd say check him out. Oh yeah, and Ras Kass, check out Ras Kass. Because while Crooked and Ras will kick it gangsta, it's a particularly intelligent brand of gangsta.

As to books, horrible title but "How to Rap: The Art and Science of the Hip-Hop MC" by Paul Edwards is a good place to start even if you have no intention of ever trying to bust a flow. The guy really does a fantastic job of breaking down the structure of rap (chart a MF DOOM verse like the dude shows you and you'll appreciate what he's pulling off sooo much more than you already do) and the book's full of input from a ton of different artist's from across the spectrum adding to whatever point he's making. Almost any artist quoted in that book is worth checking out as well so that should add to your list of people to investigate. For those who've been going nuts over her this page, Rah Digga is quoted in there frequently.

So, 2010 has been the year of getting into rap for me. Now, I'll say right now, I'm sure I'm on entry level shit at this point, and come out fully claiming to have no real knowledge of the genre. That said, I've been listening to only rock, Eminem, and various other rap kibbles and bits my entire life to this point, but something this year flipped a switch in me. Now again, entry level type stuff, but here's the stuff that's getting me going.

Eminem - Recovery, and the rest of his catalog
Kanye West - MBDTF, and everything else, though haven't heard 808's
    Drake - Thank Me Later
    B.o.B. - Adventures...
T.I. - Paper Trail, kinda digging No Mercy so far
    Young Jeezy - The Recession
Kid Cudi - End of Day, Mr. Rager isn't really clicking yet
aaand A Broken Silence, who I kind of blame for transitioning me from rock to rap. A sample of their work...
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJPn-KCeWss

Now, with those out of the way, I've also sampled Lil Wayne, Snoop, and Jay-Z, but haven't had success with anything outside of a few singles. So two questions. One - is there a certain entry point for those guys I need to shoot for? Two - What else would you recommend for someone with these tastes?

if you like Eminem check out Royce da 5'9" and the rest of Slaughterhouse (Joe Budden, Joell Ortiz, Crooked I)
try a track like Session One from Em's album, or Bad Meets Evil

theres really noone else like Kanye, but I recommend Lupe Fiasco to everyone, he's probably the most talented cat in the game right now. check for Food and Liquor (1st album), The Cool (2nd album), Fahrenheit 1/15 (his 1st mixtape) Fahrenheit 1/15 pt 2: Revenge of the Nerds (2nd mixtape), Fahrenheit 1/15 pt 3: A Rhyming Ape (3rd mixtape of Lupe rapping over Gorillaz beats), Enemy of the State (4th mixtape, Lupe over beats from '09)

B.O.B. dropped a new mixtape, No Genre. Some really hot tracks on there. I'm particularly fond of Beast Mode.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9vvuLAl99ec

In terms of rap for this year, I've been enjoying Big Boi's album a LOT. Bun B's is pretty good. I think Freddie Gibbs's came out this year? If so, that's pretty solid. TSOL is really fucking awesome. Bunch of mixtapes too. Big K.R.I.T., J. Cole, Wale, Royce da 5'9''.

Pots+pans, might I recommend Clipse? They have a really nice stripped down raw sound. I'd say start with Lord Willin', but Till the Casket Drop and Hell Hath no Fury are both really good too.
