Picking a New Video Card

Hey guys. So a couple weeks ago my graphics card went up on me, and I'm in need of a new one. I've never installed a video card before, and I'm kinda paralyzed by the choices out there.

Newegg had a nice tutorial on matching appropriate hardware, so I feel pretty comfortable with that.

Previously I was running a 1G Nvidia Geforce 9800 GT. My price range is around $150 and I'm wondering if there's a comparable or better card for that range that you guys could recommend. Lots of choices on Newegg, but I haven't been able to narrow things down in a way that I really like. Figured I'd once again turn to the collective wisdom of the boards for some assistance.

The best resource is to identify a few in your price range then research them at tom's hardware. They have a great series of benchmarks to use.

For that price your best bet would either be a Radeon 5770 or a nvidia 460. The 5770 is cheaper and I think there is a black friday deal on newegg for $100 with a rebate and a 460 for around 150.

    Link for the 5770:

A very good deal for that price.

The choice paralysis is usually a result of seeing all those damned brands. For the most part, they really don't matter and you're safe going with the cheapest version of the card you want, or if you have a case window, the prettiest- unless user reviews on the site are glaringly bad.

I can vouch for the Radeon HD 5770. For the money it's an excellent choice. It'll run what's out now and is as futureproof as you can really get in this business. The 5750 or other slightly cheaper and slightly more expensive options tend to have much less bang-for-your-buck.

AFAIK Nvidia's offering at that price point is also solid.

If you have SLI or Crossfire capability, it's worth going with whichever your motherboard favours, so down the road you can always throw a second card in. By the time you'll need it, they'll have gone down in price anyway.

The two will perform about the same, with the 5770 having a few more FPS in some games, but game that are nvidia biased will perform better on the 450. I would say get the 5770 if given the choice.

The AMD 5770 should outperform that superclocked GTS 450 in almost all benchmarks.

If you really want more bang for your buck, then you'll need to move up to the GTX 460 which will give almost a 50% performance boost for $40 more.

    Or a GTX 465 for $30 more

Of course that card uses more power and produces more heat.

You don't want a GTX 465, both it and the HD 5830 should be avoided.

The HD 5770 is good and if you can swing $180 a 6870 is very good.
