Not really. When everything else has failed we typically manage to do the right thing. There's just a hell of a lot of stuff we apparently feel we have to try first. Besides, all political victories are pyrrhic.

That's not actually true when you look at individual issues, just group labels. And group labels are terrible at determining political outlook. Hell, I could easily self-identify as a conservative even though I'm Socialist McCommie-pants in comparison to the most liberal Republican.

    Seriously.

I'm a non-party former-Republican and I'm more "liberal" than a shitload of democrats, and was even when I still had an R tacked on me.

I'm confused about the message GI Jane was sending. 99% of the movie was showing her being a capable Marine but her presence weakened the group because they were all hesitant to treat her as an equal, either by pulling their punches or by being extra-rude. OK. Fine. Queue '80s montage music.

But the remaining 1% is Viggo Mortensen's character telling her she can't be a Marine because she can't hoist a 200 pound man over her shoulders and carry him out of combat. And, in the end, she can't. She's giving a wounded Viggo a shoulder to lean on and they hobble away to safety. He writes her a poem and seems satisfied but ... what? A female Marine has to pull her downed squadmates from battle so what would have happened if his leg were blown clean off and he couldn't hobble? Can a physically fit woman 'fireman's carry' a 200 pound man?

I am obviously not the best person to speak on such things but I feel like Obama is basically laying the tracks for history instead of getting everything done in one fell swoop and then getting voted out by moderates. He is playing the long game, it feels like.

I think a lot of the frustration comes from like

    CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN

    YES WE CAN

and then you get into it and it's like

oh washington is still full of dickheads

Well, that and the almost immediate dropping of soaring rhetoric. I'm more than happy with compromise that improves over the status quo; that's the very definition of progress. I'd just also like to see some arguments for liberalism writ large every now and again. Maybe they'll be coming now that he has a combative House to play off of, but it'd be nice.

i think the overall message was that maybe she couldn't fireman-carry viggo around but she made up for her unfortunate circumstance of birth with pluck and ended up not letting her team down.

Its that line of thinking thats terrifying when talking about equality in jobs it has no right in being. Like fire fighters. If you can do the physical requirement awesome you can be a firefighter, but it should be an equal requirement that actually fufills the jobs requirement, life aint fair.

I think a lot of the cynicism with PA forumers with regards to politics is that for a lot of us young'ins the first things we saw as we were becoming politically aware, and really all we've ever really known, was either Clinton being crucified for getting a BJ and lying about it... and well... Bush.
