Omegathon 2006 Speculation Thread

So, what games are you hoping to see in the Omegathon this year? I think it'd be a crime not to have a round of Guitar Hero. Something nobody expects like whoever can climb the tower in Shadow of the Colossus the fastest would be cool too.

There was a steam sig here. It's gone now.

I think it would be really awesome if they could land some unreleased game. Nintendo has to have some great multiplayer game up their sleeves for the Rev launch. Give everyone a Rev controller for the first time, playing a game they have never played, and see what happens.

I'm mainly wondering about what the last game would be. Perhaps PacMan? Or for a more PvP feel, old school Mario Bros? I mean what the next logical step after Combat?

As for the competition leading up to the final round, I'd like to see a deathmatch played out in a couple of those virtual spheres (provided they have a more developed FPS for it this time around). I second the motion for a Guitar Hero round.

Other than that I think Diceland should be replaced with something a little more rousing. Perhaps a game of Lunch Money?

I doubt it. I'd imagine they want the whole competiton to be easily accessible. If you look at the games they've done so far, they are by and large games that any gamer could pick up and play right away. Guitar Hero has a learning curve that does not lend itself well to this type of competition.

I suppose you're right. Karaoke Revolution seemed like a great idea last year, but I don't think it worked out very well.

I think the last game is going to be something considered significant to the gaming genre. First year was Pong, undeniably one of the more important games made. Second year was combat, probably the best game ever on the 2600.

Well we can guess at what it will be this year, should be fun. We know it will be something competitive for two players and a title that was important to gaming. They also seem to like the retro games, but maybe this year something a little more modern to keep us guessing.

My guess would be Karate Champ (assuming they can lay hands on it and work some magic to display it on the big screen). This game is pretty much the grand daddy of today's fighting games.

I disagree, I've never played GH before in my life and i was able to pick it up last weekend and play pretty proficiently, It's not like I expect to get people on expert, easy or medium would suffice.

I also disagree here as I think that next to the final omegathon round Karaoke turned out pretty well, not only was it something that was challenging it really allowed the crowed to become a part of the experience.

I agree about the crowd experience, but when the round is won because one person hit 1 note and the other person hit 0, it's not the right game for the competition.

This is code, guys. Code. What you have here is not only the name of the final game of the Omegathon, but of the order in which pre-regs will get into the grand games. I have set my crack team of Cryptologists to look into this post, and I suggest you do the same. Your participation in The Omegathon hang in the balance.

While Guitar Hero would be an entertaining event, from a crowd perspective, I kinda hope they end up going with something... cheaper. Financially. 'Cause whatever the game selections are, any Omeganauts are gonna have to practice to stand any reasonable chance. And it seems rather unsporting to require dropping eighty bucks for all necessary gear. You know?

Edit: Also, I think Tetris would make an entertaining final round. Then again, that's what I hedged my bets on last year, and then got my ass handed to me in Combat. I'm not so good at the predicting game.

Um...it's not like Guitar Hero won't be available to play at the Freeplay Console area. And I know I'm bringing my copy with me...

If anything, they should have some kind of tournament for it...

Coming from someone who was in it last year, sadly only for 2 rounds, much of the Omegathon had this risky feel. The winner needed a lot of luck to go along with his skill. An example from my experience. The Mario Kart round was only going to be one race. My partner and I took first in a practice race. Heading to the finish line of the final lap of the actual race, we were in second, got fireballed or something before the last jump, it put us out of control, we fell, and took eighth.

Now, my partner was upset by the whole thing. It didn't bother me that much. It was an awesome experience, and the nature of the tournament and the way I went out was fitting.

Think about it, had I made it to the karaoke round, I could have easily made it farther if I got paired with one of the not so high scorers, and I would have got my ass kicked if I got paired with one of the high scorers.

The other round I actually participated in, Diceland, is all about chance too. We started out with 4 tables. The losers of each of the 4 tables played another game, and the 2 lowest scores of that game got eliminated. I couldn't get anything going in my first game and came in last by a HUGE margin. In the second game, I used the same "army" and every die I through landed on its best side, thus allowing me to win by a huge margin and move on.

    tl;dr version:
I think the Omegathon is about throwing the contestants in crazy situations and see how their natural gaming skill and luck can carry them through. Thats why I think games that they may not have played before, or games that have a lot of luck involved, are the best games to include.

8-bit or earlier likely. Khoo, If your going to use another atari. Use an atari flashback 2 with a cartrige port. Its nice to finally get away from the olden RF box. As well as it works great with genesis pads. Its not origional, but it won't kill your hands.

If only they would pick change air blade as the final omegathon game. (mame rom)

My bets is that atari will still be on the final omegathon round. Or maybe, pong again.

I think doo dee doot doot are the first four notes of the theme to Tetris (I know it comes with three songs, but you know the one I'm talking about). I can imagine the unbearably tense final round action now...

Blasphemy. It was beautiful and in my opinion the best experience of the whole expo. Song is a trainable skill just like any other. Sure, some have a natural gift that makes it easier, but that applies to anything that involves the human body. PC/console gaming's reflex, pen-and-paper strategy.

I think that given some heads-up this time so they could beat their voices into shape, the event could be even more awesome.

We did something similar to that for the final round of our most recent Video Armageddon game tournament.

The two finalists played SMB3 at the same time. The first person to defeat World 1 was the winner. OR The first person to die once was the loser.

It was fun, they had to go kinda fast but be careful at the same time.
