If they are comfortable glasses that fit over your own, I don't understand why it's such a big complaint. My boyfriend wears glasses and he puts on the 3D glasses to play CODBLOPs on my bigass 3D TV without complaint.

Even with 3D glasses I only see maybe 1/10 actual 3D effects, my right eye is alot stronger than my left eye so in normal eyes the 2 3D images would overlap to produce the 3D effect. However my right eye pretty much overides anything that my left eye can also see which means I dont see 3D. so for me personally no matter what they do 3D is a waste of time
Same here. I think I saw one effect in Avatar and that's it. I tried a demo of the Stardust 3D PS3 game, and nothing there either. I'm hoping the 3D fad blows over so I don't have to pay for 3D glasses when going to movies at the theater only to see things less bright and maybe get a bit of a headache after. Even worse if 3D tvs become standard. :/

I've personally never been someone that had trouble with wearing glasses. I'll gladly wear the (thick rimmed) glasses at the theatre over my own (thick rimmed) glasses and be super-double-indie. I suppose, at the same time, my mother can't stand to wear her glasses and would rather fumble around blindly, so it is an argument to be made. However, I would have thought that people that have to wear glasses and are annoyed by it were a minority.

To those with 3D TVs, how cumbersome are the glasses?

3D TVs do 2D perfectly well. I doubt 2D content will go away any time soon.

I've never actually seen a 3D movie or game, although I do have a "3D Ready" television. It's a Samsung DLP, an HLT5087S, but the technology changed and mine is practically useless unless I go through a whole bunch of hoops that may or may not work. 3D now uses a checkerboard method, which my Samsung doesn't support and the company doesn't offer a converter. Mitsubishi has a converter for their units, but its programmed not to work with Samsung displays.

Apparently someone managed to get this to work by hooking a Gefen HDMI Detective Plus device to a Mitsubishi DLP display, programming the EDID into the Gefen, and then connecting and running the Gefen between his Samsung display to his other devices (Mitsubishi 3D converter, receiver, etc). There's a different method, but apparently it involves soldering.

I'd love to try out 3D, but unless there's an easy way to do it on this TV, I'm out of luck until I buy a new one in the near future. It's a toss up between a 3D LCD/LED TV or a non-3D Epson projector, actually. I'd really love some opinions on the technology for those that have a 3D TV now.

Has this been posted anywhere? It's news to me!
Nintendo issues warning on 3DS games for children

The eyesight of children under six could be harmed by 3D games played on Nintendo's forthcoming handheld console, the company has warned.

The games giant posted the health warning on the website devoted to the 3DS handheld.

It said specialists had warned of possible damage that could be caused by 3D games which present different images to the right and left eye.

Younger children should only play 2D versions of 3DS games, said Nintendo.

    Parental control

The 3DS, the successor to the hugely popular DS handheld, goes on sale in late February in Japan and in Europe and the US in March.

The new handheld has two screens like older versions of the console with the top screen being able to show 3D images without the need for special glasses.

Parents should turn off this function if the handheld is going to be used by a child under six years of age, said Nintendo. It said the advice it had received from experts also applied to other 3D content that younger children might be exposed to.

In issuing the warning, Nintendo joins Sony and Toshiba in alerting people to the ill effects that can attend watching 3D movies or playing 3D games.

Sony has already said that parents should get medical advice before letting children watch 3D content on the PlayStation. Toshiba has said parents should keep an eye on children watching its TVs that can display 3D images without needing glasses.

The companies have also warned that watching too much 3D content can cause adults discomfort.

    http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-12100925

Obviously this doesn't only apply to the 3DS, but seems pertinent to the thread.

I've never had any complaints about wearing 3D glasses in a theater over my own glasses. Then again, my glasses are not thick and I make a point of buying small frames. Still, having to wear glasses over glasses is not a significant negative factor for me when considering 3D at home.

I'll probably buy a 3D tv for us either next Christmas, or the year after. I like the idea, but not enough to rush out and pick one up. Given the right degree of price drops or a good sale though, and my wife and I would both enjoy having that capability at home. I also find the possibilities for use in gaming more intriguing than anything done with motion controls this generation, though I suppose the ultimate in future tech would be a combination of 3D and motion controls.

While looking for an ok PC headset I passed by a Nvidia 3D vision demo at Best Buy. Pretty cool looking even if it wasn't in motion and the glasses kept going out. Really intrigued me.

Decided to buy a $500 kit from Newegg today cause why not? When I'm broke and a bum I can always remember the 3D good times as I suck dicks for $5 each.

    I own it, but don't own a 3D set

But the framerate's down on its own from the original game

I can't imagine it going slower and still being enjoyable (don't framerates typically slow down for 3D?)

Depends on how it's done, with monitors you're usually alternating frames for each eye, so it halves the refresh rate. I can't imagine the HD remix framerate is actually resource intensity related though, surely not. They may have just capped it or something.

    Impressions!

Samsung C680 delivered at 7:30am yesterday morning (I was asleep and answered the door groggily in my boxers). Quickly took apart my current set up, which is balanced on an old coffee table and drove to the city to pick up a proper stand. A couple of hours later and some failed attempts at cable tidying I've got everything set up!

First order of business was to hook up the PS3 and check it all worked, it did, good start. I had a quick browse and looked for some 3D games (to see if I owned any). I booted Wipeout up and it asked if I wanted to play in 3D, said "Yes", put my silly looking glasses on and played.

It looked awesome, however you could definitely see the drop in resolution over 2D. It felt a bit weird at first, the HUD floats in front quite considerably which means to see it you have to focus on it, and take your eye off the race, I soon got used to that though.

Some website claimed Pain was in 3D too, any excuse to play that game again is good with me (sure, it's simple, but firing a dude off a catapult in to buildings never really gets old). Slightly let down with Pain, the 3D effect was nice but it's only available in certain modes. The main game mode isn't 3D, just the sub games.

Next up I set some demos downloading and tried a few films I had kicking around whilst they downloaded(mostly Side By Side MKVs). Very very impressed with the films, little to no Cross Talk visible and crisp colours, after some fiddling with the settings.

Once my PS3 had finished downloading I booted up Motorstorm 3D demo thingy. The graphical drop between this and Motorstorm Pacific Rift was pretty evident, but the 3D effect was absolutely fantastic. It's hard to describe just what it adds to the game but I must have played that one track and one car in the demo about 5 times. I'd definitely pick up the "full" game but for £9.99 I believe you only get the one track, with different routes on it.

Next up was Super Stardust HD which I'm pretty sure I'll be buying now. The 3D effect is fantastic, lovely and subtle whilst you're zooming around blasting things, the depth on the planet/background is amazing. My sofa is a bit back from the tv and I was so impressed by the 3D on this that I picked up a chair and sat about 3 foot in front of the screen. I audibly yelped from surprise when I died and the explosion came out of the screen at me, it looked great. Definitely a stand out title.

I haven't tried much other than that, I was tempted to give Enslaved a go as I hear the latest DLC adds 3D support, but I've nearly completed it now (on to the last Chapter) and whilst I've enjoyed it I've no inclination to go through it as Piggsy, so it's not really worth the money for me.

PoP: HD Trilogy is on order so I'm looking forward to that, and I've pre-ordered Ico and SOTC.

So all in all I'm pretty impressed but it's hard to explain what it brings to the table if you haven't tried it yourself.

The Enslaved DLC plays quite a bit differently from the main game, if that makes a difference. It's more of a stealth game slash sniper rifle type thing. Also, gives some more backstory for Pigsy, which I personally enjoyed.

I haven't played it yet in 3D, but Metro 2033 is supposed to be a good one. If you play WoW, you can give it a shot, it's not all there, but some parts are really impressive while others are fucked up. They are still working on it. Deathwing looks amazing on the main menu in 3D though.

Verdict on Prince of Persia: HD Collection:

    Meh.

The 3D works really nice, when it's on but the port is incredibly lazy. All the intros are still standard definition and not in 3D, the loading screens are standard definition, the menus appear to be in standard definition whilst high definition in game footage shows in the background.

The audio hasn't been remastered and is only in stereo, there are problems with voices not being loud enough and music cutting out. Presentation is naff, a really simple game select screen at the start, you can't swap game without quitting out of the game and re-loading it. Frame rate is a bit iffy in parts, which is shocking really. It seems to be the same in 2D though so it's not a consequence of 3D.

For some reason in each port vibration on the controller is switched off, I didn't realise I could switch it on till a bit of the way in to Sands of Time.

However, after all that bitching and moaning they're still the games I know and love (yep, I even love the angst-fest that is Warrior Within). They're there, complete with all their flaws. The 3D works really well when in game, the depth is excellent on it (no pop-out though that I've seen) and I'll be playing through each game with my glasses on. No noticeable ghosting.

If you own the pc versions though I'd say they'd be just as good.

I'm a bit worried about it because I have a stigmatism in one eye which makes reading difficult sometimes. I don't think my shortsightedness would be a problem, I'm just worried I'll need to wear glasses to properly see the 3d on the 3ds.

My eye problems are not so bad that I need to wear glasses to do most things and I don't actually like wearing them because they make my vision worse after a while.

My stigmatism doesn't bother me when I watch movies in a theatre in 3d. But I don't know how the 3ds works.

A colleague at work who is an avid gamer, and also has some 3d monitors and TV has explained to me that 3D technology in movies is fairly redundant. You're generally able to tell when a scene has been put in a movie specifically as a wow factor for 3D viewers. Journey to the Centre of the Earth had a few of these scenes, like when a drop of water fell towards the camera. In most movies, outside of these scenes, 3D really doesn't add anything.

3D technology does lend itself quite well to certain gaming genres though. Racing, flight and space sims are the ones that benefit most. In these genres you can judge distance to a target much easier than you could if you were simply watching a 3D image on a 2D screen. For example; taking sharp corners in an F1 racing sim.

I wouldn't say that's true, for example on My Bloody Valentine (the first modern 3D film I saw) it wasn't the pop-out effects that "wow"ed me, it was the depth on the tunnel sequences, it was closer to watching a stage performance than a movie. My wife and I watched Shrek last night and, being it wasn't 'designed' for 3D there were no such scenes, yet we loved it.

Sure, it's not necessary but I wouldn't say it doesn't add anything. Similar to HD, all you're doing is improving picture quality, does that 'add' something? If it does then how is adding depth to an image not an improvement too?

Well, to be honest HD doesn't really improve everything either, at least not for me. I find it fantastic with visually striking movies, cartoons and good CG productions, but with many others I'd need to stop and pay attention to notice. Certainly not a universal bam-now-you're-better pill.

So I just played through Prince of Persia: Forgotten Sands, and there were at least half a dozen instances in the game where I thought, "This would be so much better in 3D." Honestly platformers + 3D = Match made in heaven. Seriously though, I thought this every time I miscalculated a jump because you can only imply depth.

Also I shan't be 3d gaming any time soon on my htpc. The power supply has packed in, which means I'm back to an older one and onboard graphics. Good enough for HD video, not good enough for gaming. Also my 3dtv is faulty (of just naff) and buzzes incredibly loud, so that's gone back and I've treated myself to one £200 more expensive, hence no cash for power supply.

i recently got a graphics card with enough horsepower to drive some of my games in 3D

how good it looks is very very application specific. borderlands? meh. just cause 2? HOMG AWESOME.

all in all, though, it's just another layer of graphical voodoo in front of my peepers, and my eyes did get tired after around 20 minutes.

i guess i can't really see it catching on to an "every game is now played in 3D" extent. i'm pretty sure it'll be a widespread option, but universal adoption rates/acceptance? noooo.

Jesus I feel like such a big man right now.

The 3D monitor I bought last month had some dead pixels, they said that they were currently out of stock, but to call back when it was back in stock on the website and they would replace it. I call today and with a combination of gift cards, and price adjustments I got the 500 dollar monitor + 3D kit for 210 bucks. Oh but I'm not finished yet, they messed up and didn't credit me back the full rewards zone certificate I used on the first order. They were supposed to refund me 10 bucks and only refunded me 5. They said they would issue me a 15 dollar certificate, as well as a 20 dollar certificate for the points I earn on my current purchase, on top of the 5 dollars they under-issued me back before. It gets even better, they said that they went through my last year of BB purchases, which was over a grand, and are tying them all to my rewards zone because they weren't before, and give me credit/certificates for all that. To top it off a 50 dollar gift card for all the trouble.

So that 500 dollar monitor that's now 210, but I'll be taking into the store, at their suggesting, and having the store then knock off the extra 50 dollars from the gift card, 40 dollars from the gift certificates, and whatever else extra I can get off from the certificates I get from 1000 dollars worth of past purchases. They might as well just give it to me for free at this point right? 8-)

Aaand my monitor completely stopped doing 3D. I'm getting several different errors which pretty much come down to, "No 3D for you!" I'm pretty much nearing the point of reformatting my entire drive, because nothing I've done over the last few hours has fixed it.

Edit: Well I got it working again, but I have to disable my second display for it, which is a pain in the ass. I didn't have to do it before and it worked, and now I can't see my chat windows while I play games in 3D.

Seeing as though this thread has been bumped, here's my 3D setup:

The pic has been assaulted by Facebook's post-processing but it should look ok.
