Dread just seems kind of clumsy to me. I see the reasoning behind it, and the idea is fun, but I don't think there is anything meaty enough there to bother with it in practise.

Well sure when you cut away a lot of the number crunching elements of an RPG you're going to get something that's a lot lighter and fluffier to play. The trade off is that you can get into a game much quicker, and the tone of the game is a lot different. Your character is easier to kill, and as the tension builds in the game the player actually feels it. It's a much more immersive experience.

So I guess it's not as meaty? That's not exactly a bad thing in this case. I guess it depends on why you play, and what you enjoy about playing.

you walk outside to grab the paper in your robe and you notice a dead bird on the ground. how sad, you think, it must have hit a window.

I still prefer Dread over D&D. It focuses on my favourite parts of an RPG. And the pacing isn't ever punctuated by someone consulting the rulebook or comparing dice rolls.
