I've played Tekken 6, I just haven't been able to enjoy a Tekken game since TTT. But I like the local Tekken players, so I'll give it a shot anyway.

It's not KOF, but get NGBC. It plays great and the netcode is solid. Also, it's criminally underappreciated.

Edit: For actual KOF on XBLA, I'd recommend waiting for KOF 2002 UM. It should be out later this year. God willing, it should use netcode similar to NGBC's. (Which you should still get, because it's so great.)

For fake KOF on XBLA, I suggest waiting for KOF SKY STAAAAAAGE. 1000% your daily recommended value of flying, fire-tossing bishounen.

Sounds cool, Page. Definitely curious about SC2 stuff, since that's the only one I played.

How about I post the video that made me want to get the game. Quite a few sick ring-outs and comebacks.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-kQApLu0wk

Fucking christ, I was going to come to this thread to post about how SC2 is really the only fighting game I still play, and you had to bring back those memories of when I was young and deep into the east coast SC2 scene. That vid might be a little after I was out, but Neooutlaw was one of my best friends and closest rivals back when I played. Of course that was before Crooked Jester became as big a name as I saw them become.

It scares me that I saw a few of their main dudes (Bibulus and Jaxel) in that vid page posted. Christ I was like 20 years old when I met those guys and played all the time together. Now im like 28 and married with a kid on the way. Still wish I could go back to that, but the way SC3 pretty much killed 99% of the community I knew including all my personal friends, pretty much took me out early.

I think SC2 will be the game all my closest buds from HS will play together till the day we die.

Edit: Oh god Jaxel still does stuff at 8 on the break on tuesdays, this thread is going to make me want to do this shit again :(

    More CvS2 stuff:

I've been playing with Bison for a while and I'm still trying to get used to his teleporting. Since the only other game I have with Bison is the SF2 series, teleporting Bison is somewhat of a new concept for me.

I thought I was doing pretty good being able to time a teleport just before a Terry Bogard Burn Knuckle would hit me.

I thought I was doing really good when I was able to teleport through a Shin Akuma Shungokusatsu......the one time I did it.

But then I see this and I can't help but be crushed with humbleness, because GOSH DANG! These are against Level 8 opponents. I'm still on default....Level 3.....and still get my ass handed to me by the end bosses.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBlaELC6Tq8&feature=related

I've been sticking with C-groove almost the entire time, but I'm starting to get into K-groove. I'm thinking I'll probably try N-groove after that.

And now for some other good times from back in the day.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9m8nqX9yyc8

I've played the SNES game a few times, but I could never really get combos going like you see in this vid. But I do have the Game Boy version, and that Fulgore Ultra is exactly as I remember it. :P

Don't feel bad about not doing long combos in Killer Instinct. They're highly impractical, and actually kind of dumb. The damage reduction is insane after 4 or 5 hits, and there's actually a flat damage cap anyway, so doing a combo of more than about 7 hits is just a waste of time, and asking for a combo breaker. That always annoyed me about the game and I could never enjoy it after I figured that out.

    And N Groove 4 life.

There's an explanation from the poster in the comments.
Haoh's Stupid Slash does an absurd amount of damage normally, probably the strongest single attack in the game.

+ Rage damage bonus. (is roughly +40% damage)

+ Sword gauge maxed out bonus damage.

+ Basara takes extra damage from everything.

    + Counterhit bonus damage.

It's not something that comes out very often though because it's easy to see coming and insanely punishable on block. But if the opponent is being reckless, well, that's a different story.

You could pull that crap in CvS2 as well. Pick a four point Haoh as your entire team. Just hang back and do his standing Fierce (I believe that's the move in the clip). About two hits would kill a one point character, and you could just try for it over and over with almost no penalty, since they'd do next to no damage to you...and you regain health when you win a round.

Too bad Haohmaru sucked in CvS2. The move in that video is a special actually, the one that's equivalent to his CvS2 fierce is his far Hard Slash I believe.

Yeah. Bump. First, let's have some laughs.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vvibK5P6p8&feature=related

Yeah, I guess this game can be included to the thread. Why not?
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2pX_WXXatUI&feature=related

But my personal favorite of these few videos is this one right here. You'll know why when you see it.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kzTAdvtc4ik&feature=related

Anyway, I recently got my TvC stick dual-modded with a PS controller PCB, and combined with a PS->GCN converter, I can now play CvS2 with my stick. Yay!

But despite all my stick playing experience with SF2:T and TvC with this stick, I'm completely disorganized in CvS2. I'm talking about difficulty in just throwing fireballs consistently. I'm going to start like I did with SF2 by learning how to play the game with a stick by putting the game to its lowest speed setting, and then work my way back up to normal speed. I'll be using Traning Mode and its key display, and I'll probably stick to Single Match for a while. That way, I can learn a single character of all the characters I use one at a time until I feel confident again and then move on to the next character. Those are the only tips I can give myself. Does anyone else have other tips I could try? I'm on holidays, so now's the perfect time to level up.

The other question I have is regarding A-Groove Bison and his overhead spamming custom combo. You've probably seen it already, but just in case, here's a video. It's seen against the second and third characters of the first match.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZKhThHhi9c

How the heck is that done?! I don't play A-groove (yet) so I really don't know.

I mean, I know the motion for that special is dragon punch (623 + P). To do it repeatedly like that, it should be repeated dragon punches. As it would appear on a stick, I'm guessing it would probably look like a ton of fireball motions, with the punch button being pressed at the diagonal instead. (2,3+P, 6, repeated) Am I right so far?

Is it just practice that's needed to getting that down perfectly, or is there something else a person can use to help getting the timing down (like a metronome or something)?

And then to top it all off, the super comes out at the end, but Bison's supers use charges! How in the heck do you charge while doing DP's?! Does A-groove just remove the need for charge in this case? Actually, what does using A-groove DO? Does it remove the recovery frames during its use? I really just don't know what is going on during it. Bison's combo looks like it simple enough and that all that is needed is practice, but I require practice AND understanding. So please help me to understand.

You can cancel special moves into each other, which is what makes characters like Bison and Sakura good, especially Sakura; even if you block you're still taking a ton of damage.

You could start by just spamming the motion over and over, but it helps if you get a rhythm. You might find it easier to start with Sakura's, which is just canceling srks into each other, but it's easier to do and doesn't require a corner or hit confirms. You're trying to find the ideal frame to cancel the move into itself. If you've played some kof games it might help.

And yes, it removes the charge timer.

Finally had a little more casual multiplayer with CvS2 after the holiday break. Did some 3 vs 3 against a guy who at least knew the game but just hadn't played in a while, so we had some good matches.

One of the characters he almost always had was Mai, and he did this simple jump kick/sweep combo that I couldn't escape from. Best I could find in video form is this, around 2:35 in.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVUx_zh-oE4&feature=related

As I would get up off the ground, he did the jump kick, and whether I could (not would, could) block it or not, he was able to go right back into the sweep to knock me back down, and so the process repeated until I lose a good chunk of health if not lose my character. The only things that seemed to work was a Ryu wakeup shoryuken or a Guile wakeup Flash Kick. If I was any other character, it was "Don't get swept!" I can't remember if rolling with LP+LK helped. The jump kick might have ended up landing as a crossup.

Somehow I doubt this is limited to Mai. I mean, just look at these. Perhaps these are unlikely to happen, but it shows it's possible.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEhP0UYv-ME

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1cz1Mday2UU&feature=related

It was until looking back on my matches that I realized this is the exact same problem I have against CPU Ryu in SNES Street Fighter 2 Turbo. It seems I am weak against, for lack of a better term, tick sweeps (with and without wakeup).

So what is it that I should be thinking about when I get caught in this situation for ways to get out of it? There seems to be more to this than "block high, block low".

Other question: How do you get to be so good that you can predict and react to something as quick as U. Rugal's instant dash grab?!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw90WqhU-Tk&feature=related

    In other stuff:

I totally remember playing this on my friend's Saturn. Good times.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L8sVmp9IWD4&feature=channel

And then there was the remake that I've never seen. I had no idea there was such a huge difference!

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmjpJdsLXNU

We probably didn't play it because he rented this instead.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RF8o2wE0Xjk&feature=channel

And lastly, every now and then, you gotta throw in a glitch video. :D

That looks like a Mugen game, so chances are better than 99% that it's just AI Ryu vs AI Rugal.

There were a few different versions of the first 2 Virtua Fighter games. It was pretty common back then, especially with arcade hardware being way more powerful than consoles, and arcade fighting games would often get balance patches from developers.

One thing that I miss from arcades is time released characters. Those were cool.

Anyway, about your Mai problem. Are you saying this guy is jumping in on you with j. hk, c. hk? Or hitting you out of the air with j. hk, then getting you with c. hk when you land? In the old Capcom games it was pretty standard for their to be a landing vulnerability to sweeps. There are a few frames from the time that you land before you can block low. If he's just sweeping you when you try and stand, why not just block and punish? Sweeps are generally unsafe, often they're punishable by just sweeping right back. If you're blocking meaty sweeps then it should just be a matter of working off a few negative frames.

Mai is in the air with a kick to my head while I'm on the ground, followed by a sweep, putting my back to the ground. As I'm getting up, Mai jumps again with a kick to my head, followed by a sweep, putting my back on the ground again. Repeat.

So I can't sweep while Mai is in the air, and I KNOW I was holding down block as I was getting up. Although, there's a chance it might have been down+back for crouch block, which would probably leave my head open, but I don't want to think that's all it was. That seems way too elementary, and this wasn't limited to one match.

Sounds like you're getting crossed up, son.

You need to watch which side of your body she's on when you get up. If her attack lands behind you, then you actually have to block that way, i.e. you have to block backwards. You could try rolling. If the timing is right or his timing is wrong, you might get out.

In general you'd be blocking low against most things anyway. You have to block jumping attacks high, and there are a few overheads, but everything else you can block low. It's not like a 3d fighter where you have to worry about the 3 attack levels all the time. Overheads all have specific animations and there are plenty of characters who don't even have them.

So you're getting hit with a jumping attack while you're getting up? You definitely have to block those high, then switch to a low block if they sweep or low short or whatever afterwards.

It's also possible you're getting crossed up, pretty common on wakeup.

And with crossups, do you block forward instead?

Is there a way to predict when an attack would end up as a crossup, or is that just a matter of repetition and practice?

Not every crossup is as ambiguous as the rest, not every jumping attack can cross up, and some characters have moves that are designed specifically for late crossups, like Iori. You'll have to practice enough to recognize when they jump and their jump arc, which will help, but if you can at least react to how far they are to your left or right then you're off to a good start.

Basically, if they cross you up then they're behind you, and when you press back to block you're actually walking in to their attack. You need to block away from them, so if it looks like they're getting behind you then block forward and see if that does the trick. After a few times you'll start to get the hang of it.

Once you do, you can start using it yourself.

I've only done some light experimenting in giving crossups to figure out how they work using Ryu with a jump followed by hurricane kick. Basically, like this in the 2nd round of the first match.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O3wdoe2qFqo&feature=related

It took a while to learn which direction for the motion I should be using. :D

But that's probably easy relative to what I've said before. Mai's jump kick looks like a kick, hits like a kick, but wasn't getting blocked like a kick.

The crossup hurricane kick is a classic. If you look, you can see that it starts late enough in the jump arc that it doesn't actually hit until Ryu is behind them. It's good because you can pull it out later in the jump in, making the crossup harder to predict.

I play lots of GGPo 3s, some St and Kof98 too. Can't wait for 3s online edition, my username name is same for ggpo as it is here.

Ive been trying to learn Q lately, but the only way i win is by huge turtle fests and taunts. Doesnt help his only cancelable normal move is close forward which has bad range and priority. But his command grab makes people scared, and thats what i love in a character.

Also, Bloody Roar was the highlight of my fighting game childhood.

Ah, Q. Jumping mk, SA2 won me many, many rounds back in the day. In fact, I'll probably always have a soft spot for both those moves. So much range on the j. mk.

I posted these in the MvC3 thread only to realize later on "Hey, there's this thread too!". (Hopefully, I'm not the only one to remember this thread.)

This video and the next is because they get fairly intense and you just don't know which way it'll go.

And then I have two more for you. First, with the SNES version of SF2:Turbo, what the heck is Ken doing to cause this? By "this", I mean the hurricane kick that hits on both sides, and how it seems to vacuum the opponent into it. I know it says it's tool assisted, but the only time I've pulled off something like this was with a Game Genie, and I'm sure that's not what they meant.

And second, in case you aren't aware, there's a show called "Super Turbo Saturdays" hosted by Damdai, and I thought this video was pretty cool since I haven't seen much SF2 Dhalsim play. His super is a lot more crazy than I thought.

    That's all for now.

Edit: Well, that was just embarrassing. The Ken video is now there for real.
